0DK Chapter 27. To the Holy Land (2) (Part 1)
Karos opened his eyes. The stars drawn against the dark night sky entered his view.
‘…I must have passed out.’
Even now, the touch of Sinclair and the holy power emanating from her prickled Karos’s back.
It still throbbed, but it was more bearable than before.
‘Let’s see.’
Karos tried to push away Sinclair’s arms that were hugging him, but they wouldn’t budge, like a locked door handle. After struggling for a bit, Karos eventually gave up.
‘Escaping is impossible.’
“Miss Sinclair?”
Karos murmured softly. Instead of a reply, he received steady breathing. Asking again yielded the same result.
‘…Good.’
Sinclair’s sleep was deep. She wouldn’t notice even if he spoke softly beside her.
“Hey. Can you hear me?”
– Ah… huh., What! Why suddenly connected?
Karos whispered quietly at the surprised voice.
“Keep your voice down.”
– Ah. Right. Hey. What happened? Are you still alive?
“Just about, but haven’t crossed over yet.”
– My Lord, are you alright?
– Lord Demon King…
– Shriek! Eek!
“Keep it down, will you? And why is the village chief here?”
Karos grimaced at the clamorous voices. Bathesia grumbled.
– We’re the ones with the headache, you know? What did you do to end up traveling with the hero?
“Don’t even ask. Did you hear from Irina?”
– I am here.
A calm female voice spoke up from the other side.
– I may have momentarily lost my senses, but it’s not over yet. I quickly gathered my wits and came here. The domain is important, but not as crucial as the current situation. I’ll be imposing on the Demon Castle for a while.
“It’s fine. By the way, is this the first time you all have met?”
– I’ve observed from a distance, but never directly interacted.
“Get along well. It’s a rare cooperative relationship. Don’t ruin it by being petty.”
Demons are inherently aggressive beings. Even on the verge of achieving a goal through cooperation, disputes often led to their downfall.
Bathesia spoke calmly.
– I am your tool. You are my master. I won’t act against your will.
“Good to hear.”
– …But are you really okay? You sound weak.
Bathesia asked with concern. It was the first time she had ever heard Karos sound so depleted.
– You were always about to do something. What’s your condition?
“You saw me that way… It’s nothing.”
Karos spoke lightly.
“I’ve been gulping down holy water instead of regular water, hugging a sacred relic to sleep.”
– …
Silence fell on the other side. After a moment, Lillis asked seriously.
– My Lord.
“What.”
– You’re not really a Demon King, are you?
“What’s this now.”
Karos frowned.
“Do you want to die? It’s bad enough being half-demon without you poking at me.”
– No. I’m genuinely asking. Normally, any demon would have perished hundreds of times over in such conditions. How are you still alive?
“I guess it’s because I’m a half-demon.”
Karos spoke indifferently. Bathesia’s voice came through, full of awe.
– Let’s say it’s because you’re a half-demon. It’s too bothersome to think about. Explain how you ended up being dragged along in the first place.
“I don’t even know.”
Karos explained. How he lied about losing his comrades to the Demon King. How the hero sincerely believed that lie. And how she decided to take him to the holy land.
After the story, Bathesia murmured in disbelief.
– That’s some story…
“I think the Sun God’s hero is crazy. She’s still glued to my back, and it’s tingling so much I feel like dying.”
– That is indeed strange… Wait, glued to your back?
“Yeah. She’s hugging me tightly. Can’t escape because of it…?”
Silence followed Karos’s words, leaving him bewildered.
“Why did you all go quiet?”
– Oh.
Irina laughed as if she found something amusing.
– So, you’re in that kind of relationship. Demons aren’t so different after all.
– Lord Demon King!
Succu cried out, her voice tinged with sobbing.
– You mustn’t fall for her seduction!
“What? Seduction? Do you really want to die?”
And Karos exploded.
“Do you understand my situation? Calling it seduction? When I was being chased by Bathesia, I never felt as close to death as I do now. Have you ever eaten food cooked with sacred relics? I’m really suffering here…”
**** ****
“…I thought I was going to die when I first ate it. But I kept forcing myself to eat because not eating meant death. I’m enduring this hardship.”
Karos finished speaking. Irina finally spoke after a quiet period.
– …You’ve had a tough time, talking non-stop for about twenty minutes.
“Phew.”
Karos sighed deeply. Venting his frustrations seemed to have relieved some of the stress.
“Let’s end this story here. I need to find a way to escape.”
– Yes! Yes!
– No need to worry then.
Bathesia and Succu responded in oddly cheerful tones. Lillis asked seriously.
– Can you not escape on your own?
“Right now, it’s impossible.”
Poisoning the food was out of the question. Fleeing at night was also impossible. Even pretending to leave for a while would end in capture due to the physical difference being like that between an ant and a human. She would definitely catch him.
“So tell me. Anything about the Sun God’s hero. Any weaknesses?”
– Hmm.
Bathesia hummed.
– As you know, we’re demons.
“Damn demons.”
Karos cursed.
