Rodin watched the troops of the Marquis of Richmond depart. It was quite a dignified sight.

“They’re leaving. Mage Rodin, how do you think the territorial war will turn out?”

“The Marquis of Richmond will win.”

“Oh ho, that’s quite a definitive tone. Why do you think that?”

“Because I’ll make it so.”

A Great Mage is helping. In a territorial war, there was no weapon as reliable as that.

“Well, that’s true. Since you’re a mercenary, you can intervene as much as you like.”

“Is the Chronoa Magic Tower difficult to deal with?”

“The Magic Tower doesn’t get involved in disputes caused by politics or power. Our Magic Tower must be even more careful. This isn’t our territory.”

The Chronoa Magic Tower’s base was in the Eastern Continent. Without justification, they could not intervene in a territorial war on the Central Continent. It could easily spark a dispute with the Landes Magic Tower or the Eckrot Magic Tower, which were in charge of this area.

‘The Kingdom of Maven is where the Eckrot Magic Tower is located. The Eckrot Tower was created by Slavon for external activities.’

Slavon was definitely keeping a close eye on this territorial war.

Unless the Marquis of Rotten could present solid evidence that he was an ancient spirit, it would be better for the Chronoa Tower not to act.

“I understand.”

“By the way, you never seem to let go of your books.”

“Yes. I like reading. It’s my only hobby.”

Because of Tower Master Tamia, Rodin had removed the Frouval Illusion class from his original schedule. He replaced the four to five hours that class usually took each day with reading.

Even before that, he had already spent three to four hours a day reading books from the Magic Empire. With the added reading time, that meant four to five more hours.

To others, he looked like someone who did nothing but read all day.

“It’s a good habit. A mage’s magic isn’t determined by mana alone.”

“I think so too.”

“But the book you’re reading—is that in ancient language?”

“Yes.”

Rodin confidently took out and read a book from the Magic Empire.

He was certain that Tower Master Tamia wouldn’t know the script of the Magic Empire.

In fact, not just Tower Master Tamia—there wasn’t a single person in this era who knew the script of the Magic Empire.

It was obvious that even Tower Master Tamia wouldn’t know what era the language came from.

“You’ve learned the ancient language?”

“I had to, to read the books.”

“Ho ho, to think there’s someone who learns an ancient language just to read books. Rodin, you’re quite the odd one.”

“I don’t think it’s any different than learning math to use magic.”

Rodin liked books. In his childhood, they were a means of gaining knowledge and experience, but now he found happiness in the act of reading itself.

Ziiing!

Just then, a sound came from Tower Master Tamia’s pocket. It was the signal from a magical communication orb.

“I’ll step out for a moment.”

“Okay.”

Rodin turned his gaze back to the book. He was savoring each character as he read, when Tower Master Tamia returned.

“It seems the territory of the Marquis of Richmond has been attacked.”

“It must be the Marquis of Rotten.”

What the Marquis of Rotten wanted was the pendant containing the statue and map kept in the closet of Prince Harrison’s residence. Winning the territorial war was merely a means to obtain it.

‘That’s probably why such an enormous amount of compensation was set.’

The compensation at stake in this territorial war was astronomical. It was an amount that couldn’t be handled by simply tightening belts for a few years.

Both the Marquis of Rotten and the Marquis of Richmond would suffer devastating damage if they lost the territorial war.

Originally, the Marquis of Rotten intended to reduce the compensation by receiving the statue and pendant instead, after winning the war.

But if he could obtain the necessary items through a method other than the territorial war? Then there was no reason not to.

“That’s what I thought too, but… hmm, something strange has happened.”

“It was expected that the Marquis of Rotten could attack the Marquis of Richmond’s territory. You must have thought it was possible too, Tower Master.”

“That’s not what I’m talking about. I’m saying that the Marquis of Rotten’s forces were all found as corpses.”

“You mean the troops the Marquis of Rotten sent were all killed?”

“That’s right. The ones who attacked the lord’s castle overnight were found as corpses the next day.”

Rodin thought of Slavon.

The only group capable of quietly wiping out the forces sent by the Marquis of Rotten in just a single day was Slavon. Even if one of the Four Great Magic Towers had acted, it wouldn’t have been possible to do it quietly.

“Do you think someone intervened?”

“I don’t know. The Marquis of Richmond might’ve set a trap, or someone else might have lent a hand.”

“Hmm.”

Rodin thought about why Slavon would have gotten involved in this matter. There was only one reason.

‘Did they find it bothersome?’

The Marquis of Rotten was a high-ranking noble in the Kingdom of Maven. The Eckrot Magic Tower, which was Slavon’s base for external operations, was also located in the Kingdom of Maven.

Their spheres of activity overlapped.

It might not have been the Marquis of Rotten’s intention, but regardless, it amounted to trespassing into Slavon’s territory.

‘Not bad, but… depending on the situation, I might run into them.’

At least, they weren’t enemies. Even if they did meet, the chances of a conflict were slim.

But even so, meeting Slavon itself was uncomfortable. The presence of an 8th-circle mage still lingered in his mind.

Click!

Just then, the door opened and Bianca entered. She poked her head through the crack of the door and looked at Rodin and Tower Master Tamia.

“It’s class time, right?”

“Mm. No class today?”

These days, Bianca had about two hours of magic lessons each day. Since she could now study magical mathematics on her own, the lessons were mostly focused on teaching her runes.

“There’s no way I’d skip it.”

“Oh dear, I guess I interrupted. But are you teaching magic yourself?”

“Yes. She’s my sister, after all.”

“To be taught directly by a Great Mage… quite the promising future. I’ll take my leave then.”

Tower Master Tamia yielded the seat.

Rodin immediately closed his book and began Bianca’s magic lesson.

A day had passed. Now, Rodin also had to begin his departure toward the Kantros Plains, where the territory war would soon take place.

“Are you not going with us?”

“I belong somewhere too, so I’ll have to move with my group.”

“Then I’ll see you at the Kantros Plains.”

“If the opportunity arises, that will happen. Well then, I’ll be off.”

Tower Master Tamia left first to move together with the mages of the Chronoa Magic Tower. The slightly over-two-day cohabitation had finally come to an end.

“Big Brother Rodin, when are we leaving?”

“Let’s leave after dinner.”

“Brother, we’re traveling at night?”

“Yeah. If we go early, we’d just have to camp anyway. I figured moving at night would be better.”

The territory war was scheduled for tomorrow morning. The exact time was unknown, but it would be sometime after breakfast.

“Isn’t it dangerous to travel at night?”

“Other places, yes, but here it’s fine. The roads are well paved.”

Strictly speaking, the Kantros Plains did not belong to the Lennox Kingdom, but were lands of the Maven Kingdom. They had to cross the Aram River, which served as a border between the two countries.

Rodin had no intention of taking a boat. The boats crossing the river operated only twice a day, making it difficult to match the schedule.

“Then I’ll go train.”

“I’ll study.”

“Go ahead.”

The usual daily routine continued.

Rodin spent the whole day attending Frouval’s magic class, which he hadn’t been able to do due to Tower Master Tamia.
