Embracing Magic - E.M Chapter 32 (Part 2)
It took four days to prepare all the herbs. Rodin examined the specification sheet Kser had given him.
‘2,400 gold. But with overlaps, it’s about 2,000 gold?’
He didn’t know the exact price the tower used to make potions, but it wouldn’t be much different from his method.
‘The price difference is significant. One costs 2,000 gold, while the other costs less than 400 gold.’
There were two methods for making the wound healing potion he had discovered.
One was his own restored method, and the other was an ancient method used by a certain kingdom.
However, the ingredients for his restored method were much more expensive, about five times more due to the price of the herbs.
‘Is it natural?’
His restored method likely used the same ingredients as those used by the towers.
Since the ingredients were the same, various towers required the same herbs, leading to an increase in demand and prices.
On the other hand, the ancient method used a completely different format from the towers. Naturally, the ingredients were different.
Most of the ingredients weren’t used in modern times, so they were incredibly cheap.
‘The key herb is treated like a weed now. It’s bound to be cheap.’
He made preparations and then stopped.
He told Kser it would take a month purely for potion making and added another month for trial and error, thus buying two months’ time.
But potion making only took 20 days. The rest was a buffer time for trial and error.
‘I can ignore the trial and error.’
Trial and error implied failure or mistakes, but Rodin was confident he would succeed on the first try.
He had time.
He leisurely read books for about a month. About a month before the promised date with Kser, he started making the potion.
First, he made all the potions using both methods.
He filled 10 liters using the method that cost about 2,000 gold. He also made about 1 liter using the method that cost 400 gold.
‘The colors are subtly different.’
The potion made by his restored method was similar in color to the one Kser had shown, slightly more reddish, but the difference was hard to notice unless placed side by side.
However, the potion made by the ancient method had a blood-red color with a purplish hue.
The color was strikingly different from the original potion, making it stand out. It had a mysterious hue.
Slice.
He made a shallow cut on his left palm. He also made a cut on his right palm with the knife. He applied the two types of potions on each hand.
‘Hmm, they seem similar?’
The ancient potion seemed to heal slightly faster, but it was not a significant difference. It was negligible in ordinary situations unless life was at stake.
Slice!
Rodin made deeper and longer cuts on his previously healed palms. He applied the two types of potions again, paying close attention to use the same amount.
The wounds were not completely healed. They were half healed. The potion amount was insufficient for the size of the wounds.
‘The speed difference is minor, but the result is similar.’
Again, the ancient wound healing potion healed slightly faster. The difference was subtle enough to go unnoticed unless the hands were placed side by side.
But the final appearance of the healed wounds was the same with both potions.
In terms of efficacy, there was no difference between the two types of potions.
He used more potion to completely heal the wounds.
Then he made cuts on his palms again, similar in size to the previous ones.
He repeated the process of making wounds and healing them four times.
Suddenly, the difference in the potion’s healing effect started to show. One side’s healing effect diminished while the other side continued to heal at a consistent speed and effect.
‘No resistance?’
Wound healing potions were used for wounds, but they couldn’t be used indefinitely. Repeated use reduced their effect, known as potion resistance.
Potion resistance was not limited to wound healing potions. All potions, whether for curing poison, internal injuries, or diseases, had this limitation.
The only way to eliminate resistance was to avoid using the potion for a long time. It could take as short as 10 days or, in some cases, several months.
However, the ancient potion had no resistance.
With some doubt, he made about 10 more cuts and applied the potion. The effect remained consistent.
‘It’s cheaper and has no resistance… excellent.’
One test remained.
Rodin took a five-day break to eliminate potion resistance. During this time, he neither made nor consumed potions. He leisurely read books.
‘The quantity is sufficient.’
He filled two buckets with enough of the two types of potions. Then he made wounds on his hands and dipped them in the potion-filled buckets.
The act of dipping wounds directly into the potion was called ‘rapid healing.’ It sped up the healing process.
‘The difference is significant.’
After five minutes, the healing speed difference was evident. The right hand healed noticeably faster.
In ten minutes, the right hand was fully healed. The left hand had only stopped bleeding and was far from healed.
After about twenty minutes, the left hand finally healed.
‘It used to take about 30 minutes for complete healing. The left hand was slightly faster, and the right hand was significantly faster.’
Rapid healing was a method of potion wastage.
Even rich merchants or nobles wouldn’t use this method unless they were on the brink of death.
‘Healing complete.’
The ancient method’s potion showed significant differences even in rapid healing. The ancient recipe was superior in every way.
‘I’m inadequate.’
His restored potion was inferior in many ways. It was proof that his skills didn’t measure up to the ancient potion makers.
‘Let’s organize first.’
He decided to remember the ancient recipe only in his head. It was too valuable to reveal to the committee.
He organized and separately recorded the recipe for the restored potion. The 10 liters of potion remained almost intact.
‘What should I do with this?’
There were about 800ml of potion left from the ancient method. It was too valuable to throw away and too precious to show to the committee.
‘Let’s store it separately.’
He carefully filled glass bottles. He sealed 32 bottles of the ancient potion with cork stoppers.
‘This will be for special use.’
He stored them on a bookshelf, out of sight. Now, only the 10 liters of potion remained in front of him.
Knock, knock!
He called the assistants standing guard outside by knocking on the door. An assistant opened a small window in the door.
“Number 108. What’s the matter?”
“Tell the committee that the final product is ready.”
“Is that all?”
“Yes. Just relay the message, and they will give orders or come to see.”
“Got it.”
One task was completed.
With a bit of free time, Rodin lounged in his chair and rested. Today, he wanted to relax and do nothing.
