“The brain represents thought and spirit. It may not possess formidable magical power or be capable of direct physical attacks, but in a certain sense, it represents the evil god himself, represents Herpo the Foul, and it is the most dangerous part,” said Dumbledore.

Evan completely agreed with Dumbledore’s view.

The most terrifying thing about an evil god was corruption and mental assaults. Through endless whispers, the evil god would cause his victims to become lost and die within illusions, or control those weak-willed creatures. The fallen centaurs and Acromantulas were controlled in this way.

Of course, this was the most obvious feature of an evil god, but it was not all.

The strange constructs they created and their powerful bodies were equally despair-inducing, they were forces that no human could contend with.

“For a brain adept at wielding spiritual power, ordinary sealing magic clearly won’t suffice. That’s why Slytherin deliberately chose Azkaban to seal it,” Dumbledore continued. “From some ancient texts left behind by vampires, we can glean some of Slytherin’s thoughts. In his original plan, that remote island was located deep in the North Sea, far from the mainland and far from wizards. There were no creatures on the island — no matter how strong its spiritual power was, it wouldn’t affect others.

“Slytherin also left the most stringent seal there, using the strongest magic power to resist the brain’s mental force.”

“The strongest magic power?” Evan asked, “Sir, do you mean the Twin Serpent Staff?”

The strongest magic power against the mental power of the evil god’s brain, if there was any power that could be called the strongest, Evan could only think of the Twin Serpent Staff.

Gryffindor and Ravenclaw had both told him that the Staff possessed unimaginable power.

Even a powerful wizard like Salazar Slytherin couldn’t use it casually.

That’s why, most of the time, he left the Staff on the long table in the Headmaster’s office.

Slytherin wasn’t at all concerned about the staff being lost — most wizards couldn’t even touch it.

Evan had no idea what would happen if he touched the caduceus, but the memory of those two giant serpents opening their eyes and staring at him was something he would never forget. …

“Oh, yes, the caduceus is the core of the magic that Slytherin left in Azkaban, and the source of the power of the sealing magic,” said Dumbledore. “It possesses extraordinary magic powers. I think it was necessary for Slytherin to leave it there, because even under such a strong force suppression, the brain of the evil god was still active, and it created Dementors, and as time went on, their number increased.”

“I don’t quite understand, what’s the point of that monster sealed in Azkaban creating so many Dementors?”

“Dementors can help it regain its strength. As we all know, Dementors bring despair and drain away all happiness. Wizards believe that they feed on those happy emotions,” said Dumbledore. “But this idea is quite strange in itself. No wizard has ever been able to truly explain why. How could happiness become food? That defies common sense and is completely inexplicable, isn’t it? Some people blame it on magic and avoid investigating the true cause. They simply assume it’s natural — but not everything can be explained by magic. Magic is not the same as the baseless superstitions imagined by Muggles. The idea that Dementors feed on joy and rely on it to survive is completely illogical — even in the Wizarding world, it shouldn’t be possible…”

“Then, what do those Dementors rely on to survive? What is the purpose of them absorbing happy emotions?”

“For a long time, we all mistakenly believed that Dementors were living magical creatures. As a form of life, they would, naturally, need some kind of food to survive. But in truth, that’s not the case. Dementors have no life. They are magical constructs sustained by magical power, just like these magical portraits on the wall. They exist because of magic.”

Another wave of discussion spread through the room, and none of the former headmasters pretended to be asleep anymore.

They were shocked by Dumbledore’s revelation. What he said just now absolutely overturned centuries of understanding about Dementors in the Wizarding world. Evan noticed that Phineas Nigellus looked especially focused, something rarely seen.

The essence of the evil god’s creations was that they were magical beings that did not require food to survive.

As long as there was enough magic supply, they could continue to exist.

And as for the source of that magic, it naturally came from the evil god who had created them.

In theory, as long as this evil god had enough power to sustain them, he could continuously produce an endless army of magical constructs, potentially filling the entire world. That was not an impossibility, and the same applied to Dementors.

Wizards had come up with countless ways to try and limit the number of these terrifying creatures, but all ultimately failed. They were forced to acknowledge the existence of Dementors and even made compromises, allowing them to gather at Azkaban, and sending criminals there to serve as their so-called food. This was considered both a punishment for the criminals and a means of feeding the Dementors.

Looking back now, that decision was nothing short of a joke.

They were not life forms that were naturally born, so all the restrictive measures were naturally useless.

Even if one were to use the Patronus Charm to wipe out every single Dementor, it would be useless. As long as the evil god’s brain beneath Azkaban was not destroyed, the Dementors would continue to appear, and sending prisoners to them would only make them stronger.

“As for draining happiness or using the Dementor’s Kiss to suck out a person’s soul, the purpose behind all of it is to serve the evil god’s brain beneath Azkaban. That brain can extract a certain type of power that is very beneficial to it from those emotions and souls. It’s a very complex process. We can simply understand it as a kind of soul and mental magic,” said Dumbledore. “The evil god’s brain needs that power, but it is sealed and confined within Azkaban. That’s why it needs the Dementors to help it gather this energy.”

“Gather…”

“Yes. If we study Dementors, it’s not hard to discover that their physical structure beneath those cloaks is very simple. These terrifying creatures have only a mouth, a stomach used to store the happy emotions or souls they consume, and rotting skin connecting the two. Perhaps there’s something like a brain within that decaying tissue that allows them to perform the Kiss, but that’s secondary. Most of the time, they simply follow the commands of the brain that created them. …”
