Harry’s footsteps gradually faded away, and the office returned to silence.

Had Dumbledore deliberately kept Evan behind? What did he want to say to him alone?

Evan waited for over ten seconds, but Dumbledore said nothing.

He had to take the initiative to ask, “Sir, will tonight’s mission be dangerous?”

Before, when facing the eyes and the body of the evil god, he had encountered certain dangers, but in the end he had relied on the items left by Slytherin to defeat the two monsters. Every time, Evan’s magic power had been significantly improved. That had been both a test and a reward left by Slytherin. Would it be the same tonight?

“You mean the Twin Serpent Staff?”

“Yes, you still remember our last conversation, don’t you?” said Dumbledore. “Slytherin left his strongest power in Azkaban, and he hoped to use this power to resist the mental force of the evil god’s brain. That staff holds such power, a power beyond our control, disastrous power. The magic left by Salazar Slytherin not only seals the evil god, but also seals this powerful magic item. Once we break the seal and defeat the monster inside, we need to face this power…”

But what was so bad about that?

After their last conversation on the subject, Evan had thought it was good news. As long as they obtained the Twin Serpent Staff, they would become stronger, strong enough to defeat Voldemort, uncover Slytherin’s secrets, obtain his treasure key, and even use the Staff to remove the soul fragment from Harry’s head.

Evan had never forgotten that. But judging by Dumbledore’s expression, he clearly saw it as a problem.

“Power is a double-edged sword. While it brings convenience, it is also a burden, especially when it is too strong. Voldemort knows about the Staff, too. “Sir, what do you plan to do?”

“I have an idea, but nothing is certain yet. Everything will depend on what we see once we find the Staff,” said Dumbledore. “Remember, Evan, we cannot give Voldemort and the evil god any chance. The consequences would be unbearable. I hope you can keep this in mind. We must win this battle — there can be no other outcome. Now, let’s go! To reach Azkaban, we’ll need to use a Portkey provided by the Ministry of Magic. This is the perfect time — no one will notice us, not at the Ministry, and not at Azkaban either. Of course, that won’t stay secret for long, but as long as it buys us some time, that’s all we need!”

Evan still felt a little puzzled. Had Dumbledore kept him behind just to stress that they couldn’t give Voldemort any chance?

Was it because the stakes were too high?

Considering the consequences of the evil god’s arrival, it was indeed necessary to be careful. But what should they do with the Twin Serpent Staff and the power it held?

He followed Dumbledore down the spiral staircase, and there was no one in the corridor.

Harry had gone back to his dorm to fetch his Invisibility Cloak, and Professor Trelawney had disappeared somewhere too.

When they passed the Room of Requirement, Dumbledore paused briefly at the doorway.

“Sir, Malfoy … have you really strengthened the security tonight?” said Evan hesitantly.   

“Yes, I haven’t gone senile just yet. In fact, shortly before you and Harry came into my office, Remus sent me a message — there’s movement among the werewolves tonight,” Dumbledore replied. “Let’s hope they don’t do anything foolish.”

If they did, things would go very badly for them. There really was a lot happening tonight. …

Harry ran back to the common room at full speed, stopping abruptly in front of Hermione, Ron, and Elaine, who were sitting together with shocked expressions.

“Where’s Evan? Weren’t you two with Dumbledore —”

“Dumbledore sent me to get the Invisibility Cloak. He and Evan are waiting for me in the Entrance Hall. I don’t have much time!” said Harry breathlessly. “Listen —”

Quickly he told them where they were going and why. He did not pause either for Hermione’s gasps of horror or for Ron’s hasty questions, or even for Elaine, pressing for more details. They could work out the finer details for themselves later. 

“… so you see what this means?” Harry finished at a gallop. “No, don’t worry about Azkaban, you need to care about what’s happening inside the school. Dumbledore won’t be here tonight, so Malfoy’s going to have another clear shot at whatever he’s up to. No, listen to me! I know it was Malfoy celebrating in the Room of Requirement, Evan and I can confirm this, so…”   

He shoved the Marauder’s Map into Hermione’s hands and continued, “you’ve got to watch him and you’ve got to watch Snape too. Use anyone else who you can rustle up from the D.A., Hermione, those contact Galleons will still work, right? Believe me, Malfoy and the Death Eaters will definitely take action tonight. Dumbledore says he’s put extra protection in the school, but if Snape’s involved, he’ll know what Dumbledore’s protection is, and how to avoid it — but he won’t be expecting you lot to be on the watch, will he? Evan and I won’t be here, you are our only chance!”   

“Harry, you and Evan —” began Hermione, but she was quickly cut off.   

“I haven’t got time to argue,” said Harry curtly. “Take this as well —”

He thrust the socks into Ron’s hands 

“Thanks,” said Ron. “Er — why do I need socks?”   

“You need what’s wrapped in them, it’s the Felix Felicis. Share it between you three and Ginny too. Say good-bye to her for me. I’d better go, Dumbledore and Evan are waiting downstairs…”   

“No!” said Hermione, snatching the tiny little bottle of golden potion from Ron. “We don’t want it, you take it, Harry, who knows what you’re going to be facing? You and Evan need its help more…”
