Behind the Ministry of Magic’s Veil of Death lay the world of the dead. Those who had never experienced death felt nothing when they stood before it; but those who had witnessed death could hear faint voices whispering from beyond.

They were the murmurs of the dead — or so it was believed. Many scholars argued that these whispers were no more than magical illusions. The Veil of Death possessed a special magic that affected those who approached it, causing them to hallucinate — the whispers of their deceased relatives or of the dying they had once seen.

These whispers held no meaning of their own, for no one had ever understood what was being said.

That was the wizards’ understanding of the Veil of Death, but judging from the conversation Harry had overheard between Voldemort and the Dark witch, the truth was far more terrible. The Veil did not simply lead to the realm of the dead, nor did it create illusions. Its true purpose was to serve as a link to the otherworld where the evil god once worshipped by the Centaurs resided.

The whispers heard before the Veil were actually the voice of that evil god. As for why only those who had witnessed death could hear the voices, it was because death created a connection between the world of the living and the void. Witnessing that passage left a mark upon the soul, heightening one’s sensitivity and one’s vulnerability to the influence of the evil gods.

The evil gods residing in the void constantly influenced the real world. When a person’s mental state dropped to a certain level and they were in extremely specific circumstances, they would see terrifying and bizarre scenes appearing from nowhere, or directly witness those little-known and indescribable terrifying beings.

Most of these beings were creations of evil gods; they would haunt those who saw them until that person ultimately died.

The Veil of Death, because it connected to the space where the evil gods dwelled, made those who approached it more susceptible to its influence.

Passing through the Veil of Death led to the world of those evil gods!

In fact, Evan had researched the Veil of Death extensively and discussed it with Hermione and the others.

Now it seemed that the Veil was a very clear coordinate, a connection between the real world and the void.

Opening it allowed one to cross the spatial barrier and enter the void. The method of opening the Veil seemed to require a special incantation and immense power.

The incantation, according to what was known, lay somewhere near where the Death Chamber Archway had once stood — something Voldemort was already having his followers search for. The source of power, meanwhile, did not necessarily have to be the Twin Serpent Staff. Other items of immense magical potency could serve the same purpose.

Legendary magical items with immense power were rare, but not nonexistent.

Of course, the Twin Serpent Staff was the best.

With the coordinates in hand, its power alone was enough to pierce the Veil between worlds.

The staff had been created precisely to cross the boundaries between the land of the living and the void, but it was not the only way to open the Veil of Death. Even if Evan managed to keep it from Voldemort, it would not prevent him from obtaining another magical item of comparable power to achieve the same end.

Whether or not the staff was lost, the outcome would be the same.

Voldemort would open the Death Chamber Veil.

Therefore, the impact of Voldemort taking the Twin Serpent Staff was almost negligible.

After all that reasoning, the question circled back to its origin — the same question Evan had been wrestling with all along.   

If Voldemort meant to enter the world beyond the Death Chamber Veil, the dimension where the evil god resided, what exactly did he intend to do there?

The fact that the extremist cult Raven’s Claw and the Dark Witch supported Voldemort spoke volumes. According to the information Evan had uncovered, this cult’s main purpose was to promote the doomsday theory. Its followers fanatically believed that in the near future, the evil gods would break free from the prisons held by the Titans and Ancient Sorcerers and return to this world, bringing a new order — the so-called Doomsday Judgment. Only those faithful to the evil gods would survive the judgment.

Raven’s Claw’s goal was to release the evil gods, but this was certainly not Voldemort’s objective. Releasing a monster with infinite power to destroy the world, even with his soul already fragmented many times, was something Voldemort would not do. What he wanted was to become the Demon King himself, to rule this world.

Therefore, he needed to become a terrifying and immortal being like the evil god.

His current desire to enter the Veil of Death was based on this reason, not on releasing the evil gods.

That was the most basic assessment of the whole situation. Evan didn’t know the specific method for transforming a human body into a god, but a certain step seemed to require Voldemort to enter the world of the gods and perform some ritual act there. That, above all, explained his current obsession with the Death Chamber Veil.

Undoubtedly, even for Voldemort, this process would be extremely dangerous.

But if he wished to become a god, he had no other choice.

That seemed to be the whole story. Evan had figured out the ins and outs, but that didn’t seem particularly important, because he had already long known that Voldemort intended to become a god. Now, the question was what he and the Order of the Phoenix could do during Voldemort’s journey into the Veil of Death to become a god.

Stopping Voldemort seemed nearly impossible!

After Voldemort took the Twin Serpent Staff, nothing could truly prevent his attempt. It was only a matter of time before the wizards of Raven’s Claw uncovered the spell to open the Death Chamber Veil. In the meantime, Voldemort seemed to want to be seeking the Elder Wand as well, which was probably the only thing that might slow him down. Although Voldemort didn’t yet know the Elder Wand was in Dumbledore’s possession, he would find out soon enough if he kept investigating.

In other words, with the Twin Serpent Staff gone, all Evan and his companions could do now was hurry and find the Founders’ secret treasure keys.

The only change from before was that they had less time.

That seemed to be the case. Evan gave his head a small shake and rose from bed.

If they were going to hunt for the Four Founders’ secret keys, he had to press on with deciphering the inscriptions on the Cup and the deed. Dressing as he thought, he took a moment to comfort Dobby, who was still weeping in guilt, and gently sent him off to the kitchen to see whether Kreacher needed any help.

A little over ten minutes later, before Evan could leave the room, Hermione and Elaine slipped in from outside.

“Don’t go downstairs right now,” said Elaine, flopping onto Evan’s bed. “It’s really noisy down there!”

“What?” Evan asked instinctively, still lost in thought and not quite understanding.

“Sirius and Harry are having a row,” said Hermione. “Sirius just told Harry about Ron’s arrest, and they started arguing.”
