Harry Potter and the Secret Treasures - H.P.S.T Chapter 1682: Evan's Guess
A Squib?
A Squib from the Ravenclaw family?
This Squib was a direct descendant of the Ravenclaw line — of pure Ravenclaw blood, no less — and he had lived a thousand years ago, in an era when bloodlines were considered exceptionally pure.
No matter how one thought about it, such a thing was almost unimaginable.
Reliable data showed that the frequency of Squibs had only begun to increase gradually over the past few centuries. The primary reason was intermarriage between wizards and Muggles and the mixing of their bloodlines. This phenomenon was often cited as an example in books and magical studies related to so-called “pure-blood supremacy.”
In the Black family’s library, Evan had come across many such magical texts and had read them in his spare time.
Although the conclusions those books tried to draw — claims such as pure-blood wizards being inherently superior — were utterly worthless, the data itself did not lie. The appearance of Squibs was indeed correlated with the purity of both parents’ bloodlines: when both parents were wizards, and of pure blood at that, the likelihood of their child being a wizard was far higher. By that logic, for a direct descendant of a family like Ravenclaw to turn out to be a Squib a thousand years ago was an event with odds as low as a comet striking the Earth.
‘Wait — if this Young Master Dalian wasn’t a Squib…’ Evan thought, ‘then could he be an Obscurial?!’
Compared with the idea that he was a Squib, this explanation was far more believable — far easier to accept.
Dalian Ravenclaw was not a Squib, but an Obscurial!
He was not without magical power; his magic had merely been suppressed, or perhaps parasitized by some Dark magical force, rendering him unable to cast spells. Although Obscurials were also rare, even far fewer than Squibs, considering Dalian’s identity, this was clearly more credible than him being a Squib.
Following this line of thought, what, then, could have caused Dalian to become an Obscurial?
Had he been abused, leading him to lose control over his magic?
Or had he been bewitched by an evil god, his mind parasitized by a Dark magical force?
Considering the Veil of Death was located in the center of the lake next to the castle, connecting to the world of the evil god, Evan felt the second possibility was more likely.
Based on the clues he had found, a story quickly took shape in his mind: Initially, the first Guardians had sealed the Veil of Death and the evil god within. The seal they left was powerful, but over time, its strength weakened, and the evil god’s consciousness gradually seeped from another dimension into the real world.
Through some twist of fate, it tempted the young Dalian, took root within his mind, and then used him as a conduit to cast wicked Dark magic, gradually influencing all the Ravenclaw wizards, causing them to lose their minds and open the Veil of Death, leading to the final destruction.
As for why this resulted in destruction rather than the evil god’s full descent, that most likely had something to do with the magic Dalian’s ancestors had left behind within the castle.
When the castle was still intact, its overall structure and internal layout constituted a powerful protective magic.
As the ghost Marcus had said, the final designer had placed magic within the castle, connecting the five outer towers with the central tower, — the Pinnacle of the Stars — as a convergence point. The castle’s internal structure had likewise been built to serve this magic; in order to preserve the integrity of the spell runes, many passageways had been deliberately restricted.
Although the light and shadow didn’t reveal these details, Evan found some traces on the castle’s remaining stone walls — an unrecognizable ancient rune drawn with gold thread. Now only faint traces of the past were visible, mere echoes of what had once been there; these traces were part of the magic.
This proved that powerful enchantments had indeed been placed within the castle, not the kind cast with a wand, but a powerful spell left behind by ancient alchemy. This magic had been set by Ravenclaw’s ancestors or the earliest guardians, and it was triggered and controlled when the Veil of Death was opened.
Although there were still things Evan couldn’t explain, such as how this powerful magic worked and what exactly had happened on the day the Veil was opened, compared to his initial confusion, things were now gradually taking shape.
Of course, all of this was still speculation on Evan’s part, but the likelihood was high.
This conjecture explained many things he had previously found strange, such as why the ghost Marcus couldn’t see the Dark Witch’s spell at the Veil of Death in the center of the lake, why he seemed not to notice the strange statues in the garden below before Evan pointed them out, and why he had such difficulty recalling things about Young Master Dalian, as if some unseen force was preventing him from remembering.
If all of this was influenced by Dalian’s own Dark magic, then it wouldn’t be strange at all.
Evan pondered, carefully observing the stone sculptures below with care, searching for any clues that might have been left behind.
So far, these statues were the only things in the castle directly connected to Dalian Ravenclaw.
Perhaps he had carved them while he was possessed or bewitched by the evil god; after all, losing one’s mind was a gradual process, not something that could be done overnight.
Through the vast arched window, Evan carefully observed the statues near the banquet hall on the outer side of the garden. Most of them were extremely abstract and difficult to describe, or creatures like Medusa drawn from myths and legends. They gave him a vague sense of familiarity.
They were like the evil god’s creations he’d seen in the Centaur Temple, yet so different, with a strange sense of incongruity.
As he approached the central tower of the castle, the Pinnacle of the Stars, this incongruity intensified.
They seemed to become even more abstract, but this abstraction wasn’t as elusive as it initially appeared; rather, it gradually began to exhibit a certain pattern.
What exactly this pattern was, Evan couldn’t quite put his finger on, but he had a feeling about it.
Furthermore, the aura of the evil god clinging to the statues was growing stronger and stronger!
The further it went, the stronger Dalian’s power had become, and the weaker his control over himself. All of it was reflected in the statues scattered throughout the garden.
“These statues are definitely related to an evil god; they’re some kind of creations of an evil god!” Evan was certain of it.
However, it wasn’t the evil god he was familiar with.
Suddenly, as if sensing something, his gaze swiftly passed through the carved arched windows and the countless statues in the garden, finally landing on a toppled humanoid statue closest to the central tower. The statue itself was severely damaged and weathered, but under the magical light and shadow, its former shape could still be faintly discerned.
From behind, it looked somewhat like a Dementor!
That’s right, Dementors, the guards of the Wizarding prison Azkaban!
These evil god creations, crafted by Herpo the Foul, were all too familiar to Evan!
Even though it wasn’t perfectly clear from this angle, he was certain: it was a Dementor!
In other words, the evil god aura appearing here belonged to the evil god transformed from Herpo the Foul.
The space beyond the Veil of Death was where Herpo the Foul resided!
Wait — how was that possible?!
