Among the many mysteries of Ravenclaw Castle, Dalian Ravenclaw was undoubtedly an exceptionally peculiar existence.

Evan felt he must know something.

“Auntie really did choose a hot-tempered heir. You don’t seem like a Ravenclaw at all, more like a Gryffindor,” Dalian said softly, taking two steps forward with casual indifference. “As I just said, I, like the poor old butler, am a phantom of the past, imprisoned in this castle by evil magic for over a thousand years. We’ve always been here, just unseen by the living. It was your arrival that summoned us back from the darkness.”

Evan said nothing. He merely dipped his wand slightly, signaling for Dalian to continue.

He had some guesses, but wasn’t entirely certain.

Since it was Ravenclaw’s Diadem that had caused all these changes, then…

“The Diadem on your head caused the disturbance. As for who cast the spell that allowed us to reappear, the answer is obvious — it was my dear aunt, Lady Rowena Ravenclaw.”

“Lady Ravenclaw?!” Evan exclaimed. So it really was Rowena Ravenclaw.

Like the Diadem, was this another event planned a thousand years ago?!

Before this, Evan had deeply disliked Salazar Slytherin.

Slytherin represented nothing but trouble: trials layered one atop another, enemies growing ever more formidable, and all of it infuriatingly complicated. But now, Evan found that he was beginning to dislike Rowena Ravenclaw as well. It seemed she had calculated his every move a thousand years ago, arranging everything in advance and simply waiting for him to step into it.

It had been the same with the Diadem before, and so was the situation here now.

At this rate, Evan might even have to go back with her to the age of the Old Gods, helping the Titans deal with the descent of an evil god — an utterly headache-inducing prospect!

“Indeed. Who else but her could set spells in motion across a thousand years? Witches and wizards with great power are not uncommon, but as far as I know, she alone wielded mastery over time itself!” Dalian paused for a moment and continued, “I saw that special Time-Turner in the family archives. Do you have it with you?”

Evan did not answer his question, nor did he admit that the Time-Turner was in his possession.

He thought for a moment and said instead, “You don’t seem like a Squib at all!”

“Not being able to cast spells doesn’t prevent me from acquiring knowledge from books. I must admit, Ravenclaws are smarter than wizards from other families, which is why your Diadem is called the Diadem of Wisdom, not the Diadem of Power, Courage, or Authority,” said Dalian. “Not being able to sense magic is indeed regrettable, but it also means I needn’t waste precious time on the meaningless swishing of a wand. Instead, I can stay quietly in the library and read, acquiring any magical knowledge I want. In fact, I have learned a great, great deal from books.”

He seemed more than willing to linger on the subject, continuing with evident relish. “Father and many people in the family have been working to restore the family’s glory. They have been searching everywhere for the whereabouts of the Diadem on your head, doing many things in the process, so many, in fact, that relations with the Council of Elders, Hogwarts, and other Wizarding families grew increasingly strained. Yet they have never been willing to sit down and read a proper book. Rather tragic, wouldn’t you say? I have always believed that it was knowledge, not that Diadem, that made the Ravenclaw family powerful.”

“So all you gained was knowledge? When I came up here just now, I saw those statues. Marcus said you sculpted them?” Evan continued. “Those statues are all creations of evil gods, and they’ve come back to life!”

“I merely sculpted the creatures I saw inside the Veil of Death; their revival has nothing to do with me,” said Dalian. “Well, I think it’s because the evil god inside the Veil is descending, and its power has resurrected them.”

“You’ve been inside the Veil of Death?” Evan frowned.

“No, it’s all in the books. My ancestors left detailed records, and I unearthed them among a mass of old documents,” said Dalian. “Apart from me, no one took any interest in those fascinating accounts. I had hoped that by doing this I might awaken my father and the rest of the family, make them realize what lay within the Veil of Death — but it had no effect. In fact, most of them believed these were nothing more than fabricated monsters, things that never truly existed.”

“Well…” Evan wasn’t entirely convinced by Dalian’s words. He thought for a moment and continued to ask, “What exactly happened here in the past? And what about Lady Ravenclaw’s magic — what is it really? Also, I heard Marcus mention that there’s magic in this library that can prevent the Veil of Death from opening and allow souls to rest. Where is it?”

“They are, in fact, all the same thing,” Dalian answered, walking over to his music box. “Truth be told, you should understand this better than I do. After all, you are Rowena Ravenclaw’s heir. All of this that she planned should be carried out by you.”

“What do I need to carry out?” Evan pressed, still unclear about what Dalian was implying.

“The entire spell, the magic left in this castle by the Ravenclaw ancestors, the magic of the Valkyrie.”

“The Valkyrie’s magic?” Evan repeated, even more bewildered.

There was indeed magic set up inside the castle; the layout and the magical runes on the walls all confirmed this. There was a powerful spell here, but where was it? And how was it to be used?

Judging by the firmament overhead and the runes etched into the surrounding stone pillars, this place should be the very heart of the castle.

But the magic in this place was also the most chaotic and complex; Evan couldn’t find a way to cast it.

“Yes, the Valkyrie’s magic. Only this spell can prevent the opening of the Veil of Death and allow the souls of all the dead to rest in peace. It was left by the ancestors of the Ravenclaw family, and only the true heir of the family can cast it,” Dalian said slowly. “The true heir of the Ravenclaw family, the inheritor of the Valkyrie’s magic, the guardian of the Veil of Death.”

With each sentence he spoke, he took a step closer to Evan.

As Dalian drew nearer, Evan could feel the magic around them growing increasingly chaotic.

“My aunt — she was the last guardian of the family,” said Dalian. “She chose you. That makes you the new inheritor of the Valkyrie’s magic and the guardian of the Veil of Death. It is for you to bring all of this to completion.” As he spoke, he extended his right hand toward Evan.

The moment he finished speaking, the Time-Turner hanging at Evan’s neck floated up, its hands spinning faster and faster.
