Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 108 (Part 2):
“How was the exam?”
Asuka, with a wooden sword on his back, came waving his hand at the entrance of the exam room.
Helmut’s duel was scheduled early in the morning. Asuka had a duel in front of other instructors a few minutes earlier than Helmut. So, it was likely to meet here.
“Fairly well.”
“Your opponent was Charlotte, right? She seemed quite capable. How long did it take?”
It was a tone that implied he must have struggled a bit, even though he was expected to win.
Helmut pondered briefly. It seemed like it was in the range of seconds, but he couldn’t count it precisely.
“About a minute.”
“What did you say?”
“It seemed to be less than a minute, it ended quickly.”
Asuka, who had been frozen for a moment, glared at him with narrowed eyes.
“You know, I thought you were Alea talking to me right now.”
“I just answered the question.”
“Do you resemble your roommate? Really, why do I meet these kinds of people.”
With Asuka grumbling, Helmut headed to the dormitory.
The written exams were scheduled to be taken all at once after the practical exam period.
After having a quick lunch together, they headed straight to the study room. By now, studying in the study room had become a familiar routine.
Although he didn’t slack off when studying alone, Helmut found that studying with others who shared the will to study was more conducive to concentration.
There was a suitable tension. Especially with Alea, who kindled enthusiasm in the same room, there was no need to say much.
Sian said in a bad way that losing first place is something that Alea can never tolerate, even if she bites her tongue and dies.
Helmut fully agreed with his opinion. If Alea, who kept calling Sian the second-place, second-place, ever heard such words from someone else, she might go on a rampage.
Helmut was also working hard so that Alea wouldn’t have to run 100 laps around the playground.
In case such a thing happened, he was a bit concerned about how Alea going to act.
Asuka was the weakest-willed among the four, but influenced by his friends, he worked quite hard.
As a strong individual, he was always number one in practical exams before Helmut appeared, so there wasn’t much to worry about.
The one who acts most like an ordinary student among them is Sian.
“Oh, I messed up the exam.”
Sian lamented and entered the study room. Helmut and Asuka, who were just opening the textbook, looked at him.
“Ugh, to become like this. It’s all because of you guys.”
“If you studied instead of looking for a late-night snack, you would have done well on the exam.”
Asuka sneered, even though he was also hanging out with him. There was no such kindness to comfort him in this room.
Sian made an incredibly disheartened expression. Helmut asked.
“Couldn’t you write the answers?”
“No, I wrote all the essays, but out of the 50 multiple-choice questions…”
“Out of 50?”
As Asuka responded, Sian put his hands on his head and vigorously messed up his hair.
“I missed two questions! Uhuhuhuk!”
“What’s this kid complaining about.”
Asuka closed the textbook with a dumbfounded face.
If all the questions have the same score, he scored 96 out of 100.
And he’s making a fuss with a face like he’s going to die. Sian grumbled.
“Do you know how big a deal it is to miss two questions in our department? I’m going to fall out of the top 10. In the eyes of disdain, I won’t even hear the second place. Sian, the inferior student! I, who was in second place! Maybe then, I’ll want to hang myself….”
Perhaps Alea was the hidden subject in that statement. But then the door creaked open, and a calm voice was heard.
“I don’t think that will happen, the ‘Magic and Culture’ exam was a bit difficult. The exam room is like a sea of tears.”
“Well, really?”
“Yeah, since, on average, more than 8 questions were wrong, you probably didn’t do that badly.”
“How many points do you have?”
“Of course, I got a perfect score.”
Sian’s hopeful eyes died instantly. As Alea sat down, she added coldly.
“Ah, of course, based on the announced multiple-choice questions. I don’t know the results of the essay exam yet, but there won’t be anyone who scored better than me.”
She spoke as if it was a given. And it was a reality that was taken for granted. Sian leaned his chin on the desk and murmured gloomily.
“…I think it’s better not to talk to you during the exam period. It feels like hitting rock bottom.”
“If you’re perpetually in second place, there’s no need to compare yourself to me. There’s no comparison anyway.”
“Alea, you!”
Sian lifted his head abruptly. He looked unusually angry.
He had been complaining that he might lose the runner-up spot even before the midterm exam started, so it wasn’t just a saying. He was quite stressed too.
But as soon as the cold gaze was fixed, Sian immediately shrank.
“Never mind. I’d rather die than suffer.”
‘This guy also recognizes the strong when he sees it.’
Helmut thought. His surroundings had a vision to recognize opponents compared to the average human.
Sian, who was always on the receiving end, seemed pitiable, so Asuka stepped in with what seemed like comforting him.
“Hey, Sian. That guy might miss one or two questions on future exams. You just have to do well on the exam in the future. Whether it’s runner-up or top, it’s just a hair’s breadth.”
It seemed like he was laying the groundwork because he was expected to be the runner-up, not comforting.
Sian, with a deep voice, said, “You don’t know. Alea there didn’t just get a perfect score on the entrance exam! That monstrous guy had perfect scores for two consecutive semesters last year.”
“Oh, really…”
‘What the hell is this?’
Asuka looked at Alea with strange eyes as if looking at a monster.
Alea just opened the book without batting an eyelash.
The study room soon became quiet. It was a perfect silence that suits the exam period.
**
The second duel in the midterm exam ended a little later than the first duel. But it was more blatantly ‘giving a break’ than then.
This time, the duel opponent was a guy who hadn’t faced last week, and he was a bit inferior compared to Charlotte.
As soon as the exam was over, Instructor Ethan gave him a pleased look. He seemed to be in a good mood.
If Helmut takes the top spot in the first semester, it will be a good gift for his guardian, Instructor Ethan.
The excellent grades of the ward are directly linked to the honor of the guardian.
‘Now the hardest exam is left.’
Helmut thought, putting aside the departmental exams. In fact, the departmental exam, especially the practical part, was the easiest for him. The general subjects were the most challenging.
‘Being the top of the department…’
Helmut was curious about what feelings he would feel if he took the position that Alea attached so much meaning to.
He would probably find out soon enough.
