Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 163 (Part 2):
Luke Yeager had been feeling uneasy up until they entered the village. This was the same feeling he had been experiencing ever since he met the mysterious Hyde.
It was hard to believe what he heard, but he couldn’t shake it off.
Someone oddly familiar, not the type to spout lies.
It was just that the story he told was too incredible to take at face value.
“Check if there’s anyone around. I’ll go this way.”
“Yes.”
The knight who came with him moved first. Luke, with a short response, went in the opposite direction. The village, still bearing signs of habitation, was quiet.
His mind was cluttered, but he had to focus on the mission at hand.
‘It seems everyone has evacuated to Deser.’
Like in the first village, there might still be someone left. Luke Yeager thoroughly searched the village.
As he turned a corner, a tearing scream echoed from the other side.
-Kyaaak!
And he sensed a faint trace of magical energy. Luke drew his sword and ran.
Bang bang! A person-sized giant lizard was banging on a closed wooden door.
Upon noticing Luke, the lizard turned and screeched threateningly.
-Sssaaah!
“Sounds like a low-level one.”
Luke frowned and swiftly swung his sword.
Thud! The lizard’s head was cleanly severed, and it fell to the ground. There was a stir inside the building.
“Is anyone there? I’ve taken care of the beast.”
Finally, the door opened. A frightened little girl peeked out, probably about eight years old.
Luke’s expression softened. He reached out his hand.
“I’m Luke Yeager of the Palma Knights. Why didn’t you evacuate to Deser?”
“My grandmother can’t walk well.”
Another presence was felt inside the house. An old woman, leaning on a cane, hobbled out. She looked clearly ill at a glance.
“Where are the child’s parents?”
“They went on a trip for work… haven’t returned yet.”
The old woman answered with a cough. It seemed the child had been left with her grandparents while her parents were away.
“Is there anyone else left?”
“We’re the only ones left in this village.”
The girl quickly responded. If there were only two of them, it would be easy to take them to Deser.
“Alright, then pack only what’s necessary…”
At that moment, the ground shook. Boom! With a loud noise, the entire village trembled as if an earthquake had struck. The girl screamed.
“Aaaah!”
The scream was more powerful than the quake. Luke furrowed his brow.
Something was coming from the ground, moving at the speed of a flying bird.
Boom! The impact came with a wave of force.
The house collapsed like a sandcastle. The old woman inside opened her mouth.
Before she knew it, she was buried under the collapsing house. Crunch!
Luke Yeager pulled the child back and threw himself backward. Giant black legs were protruding, crushing the house.
The creature that emerged, leaving the house in ruins, was a giant spider.
‘Damn it.’
Luke clenched his teeth. He hadn’t been able to save the child’s grandmother. Would it have been better to dash in and cut down the collapsing building?
No, if he had been crushed by the large body, that would have been a bigger problem. Saving at least one was the right decision.
The girl, having lost her grandmother right before her eyes, wailed inconsolably.
“Waaaaaah!”
The giant spider looked at the girl with its emotionless eight eyes, seeing her as prey. A subtle venom seeped from the creature’s body.
Sounds of battle seemed to come from somewhere else in the village, suggesting another demonic beast had appeared, but the knight who had come with Luke was nowhere to be seen.
Luke gauged the situation.
‘I need to put the child down.’
A swordsman using Vis has strong immunity. He could withstand the venom, but the child couldn’t.
He could handle it alone, but that would put the child in danger.
‘First, we need to get out of here. To where the horses are!’
Luke immediately sprang to his feet and ran. The spider chased after him without hesitation. Crack, crackle!
Every time the creature moved, the ground caved in, and buildings crumbled. The sight of the giant spider pursuing him with its eight legs was terrifying.
‘I can’t shake it off. It’s too fast.’
Luke turned around. The child, seeing the spider, screamed and shook her head. The venom the spider exhaled killed the grass nearby. Hiss.
‘It could be dangerous for the child.’
Still, there was no other way. Vis flared up on Luke Yeager’s sword.
But at that moment, a powerful Vis was felt behind the spider.
Whish! A flash of light split the spider’s head. Before the creature could react, the second and third strikes tore through its pierced head.
The monster’s tough shell was sliced like paper in front of the powerful Vis. Thump! The spider fell to its side.
A man leaped over the creature’s body and approached.
“Luke Yeager, are you alright!”
“Knight Commander.”
Luke looked at him while checking the pulse of the unconscious child. She seemed to have fainted from shock.
“I’m fine. Where are the other knights?”
“They’ll be here soon. They’re dealing with another one. But…”
Lutus Cicero, with his usual expression, showed the compass. The compass pointed in one direction.
With monsters appearing all around and the compass pointing firmly in one direction, it meant the creature with the strongest magical energy was there.
There must be a red scorpion nearby. They needed to chase it before it could cause more trouble.
“Follow me. We don’t have time.”
“Yes!”
Unable to argue with the Knight Commander’s words, Luke Yeager placed the child in one of the few intact houses and closed the door.
Then, he readily followed him.
