Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 21 (Part 2):
Helmut’s concentration and senses expanded. He felt the power contained within the barrier.
An overwhelming force that purified all magical energy. The intense heat seemed capable of burning his skin.
Entering it, Helmut felt he would quickly turn to ashes.
“Let’s go.”
Yet, Helmut spoke, determination clear in his eyes.
His eyes, dark as the abyss but holding a clear light, were unbreakable.
Helmut jumped into the water. The rushing cold was like ice, the chilling current sharply awakening his senses.
Swept away by the water, Helmut didn’t need to swim.
He felt Igrelle following, its wings flapping behind him. Magical energy from Igrelle enveloped him.
The unfamiliar magical energy made his body twitch. He nearly summoned his Vis to fend it off.
But Igrelle seemed intent on following through with the plan.
At the waterfall’s base, where the current accelerated, he would pierce through the barrier!
Approaching the start of the waterfall, Igrelle stopped at the cliff’s edge.
– Now, the barrier. I wish you success!
Helmut took a deep breath, plunging headfirst into the water. Swept down by the current, he felt a dizzying drop.
Falling headfirst, his mind was clearer than ever. The blurry barrier appeared before his eyes.
Before reaching it, Helmut closed his eyes. And then,
“Ugh!”
The rushing water filled his opened mouth, silencing his scream. An unbearable pain assaulted him.
It felt as if a heated iron rod was piercing through his head and body. It was torture that forced all truths to be confessed.
The purifying force burned deep within, scorching both the outside and inside of his skin.
In that brief moment, Helmut died and was reborn thousands of times.
The barrier repelled anything impure. The purifying force tolerated not even a trace of magical energy within Helmut’s body.
Helmut’s Vis scrambled to protect his vitals and organs. It dried up rapidly, like a flimsy wooden shield trying to block lightning.
His will to resist was instantly crushed. Maintaining consciousness became impossible.
Swept by the current, Helmut lost consciousness, unaware if he had successfully crossed the barrier.
*
At some point, a sound woke him. His own labored breathing.
Unaware of how much time had passed, he lay in a damp, soggy place.
Helmut thought dully.
‘Wh…What happened?’
He was utterly weakened. Any magical beast, even a child, could have taken his life.
And Helmut wouldn’t have been able to resist.
Surviving was a feat, but he was alive. Helmut belatedly realized this.
‘I’m alive.’
With a hazy consciousness, Helmut managed to stand up.
Grimacing in pain, he barely got to his feet.
That he had any strength left was a miracle given his condition.
Yet, Helmut succeeded in standing on his own two legs.
He couldn’t see clearly, but he had to move. Instinctively, he sought a safer place.
His whole body felt like it was breaking apart. Dry fragments scraped his lungs, and the blazing sun drained his moisture. Breathing was a struggle amid the excruciating pain.
Stumbling forward, he fell at a stone’s trip, spreading a wave of agony.
‘It hurts.’
A stifled groan turned solid in his throat.
Blood-filled vision blurred everything. All was hazy and red, making it impossible to distinguish objects.
Yet, even in the worst state, his heart pulsed weakly, resiliently. Tenacious life force began to revitalize necrotic areas.
Helmut sensed Vis slowly gathering deep within him.
His body was trying to recover, slowly.
His nearly dead body was healing. The implication…
A deep sigh of relief covered his lips. His eyes, previously dim, flashed intensely like a beast’s.
‘Did I make it?’
Yes, he had. He had escaped. From the Forest of Roots, known as the magical boundary!
No one had ever done it before. Helmut, the only human to survive the Forest of Roots!
The joy of success momentarily made him forget the pain. He didn’t leap up only because he lacked the strength.
Without time to savor the triumph, his eyes closed. Consciousness faded like a snuffed-out flame.
His dying body quickly reached its limit. Energy was rapidly depleted.
A comatose state.
Incapable of anything, he lost consciousness again.
This was Helmut’s first step towards the world.
