Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 309 (Part 2):
The depth in Terra’s eyes as she faced Helmut was unfathomable. In those eyes, even Helmut’s abyss seemed to be a not-so-heavy color.
Helmut knew that this wasn’t simply a question from a friend’s mother. With power comes responsibility. Just as it was for Darien.
The two archmages were relatively free from this, but not Terra, being a spirit mage. She bore the responsibility for power as much as a priest would.
Helmut glanced at Sian. He too knew that Sian hadn’t invited him here simply to meet his friend’s parents.
‘This is an opportunity and…’
I’ll be on your side, but others are different. Show yourself and make those who could potentially become your enemies into allies. If you need power, even my parents could become that power.
Sian’s intention seemed to become clear.
Sian’s mother, Terra, was none other than the contractor of the most powerful spirit on earth.
Even if Sian had faith in Helmut, such faith had to be tempered with reason—especially with the wild cards of Igrelle and Elaga.
Thus, Sian aimed to show his mother the presence of Helmut and the two magical beasts, forewarning her of potential dangers.
That was his duty regarding the choice he made as a spirit mage and a Rodril.
To control a danger, one shouldn’t simply believe that the danger will be controlled. Such complacency wasn’t befitting of a mage. A mage should recognize the possibility of that danger and prepare for it.
Sian wasn’t a thoughtless guy like Asuka. Although he acted thoughtlessly, he was a spirit mage.
Spirits prioritize the maintenance and continuation of this world above all else. Nature is something that constantly cycles through life and death. Spirits are like the will of that natural world.
It’s a concept different from the peace often spoken of by humans.
Even if it means war and destruction, as long as life persists in this world, that bare minimum is enough for spirits. It’s not like the stability and continuity sought by Lumen.
‘But the Demon King War crossed even that threshold.’
Sian, as a spirit mage, was no different from a priest of the spirits. As long as he used that power, and as long as he was a Rodril, he couldn’t betray the will of the spirits.
Helmut opened his mouth after closing his eyes briefly and then opening them. A calm voice flowed out.
“Elaga and Igrelle don’t eat humans. As long as they’re not threatened, they won’t harm anyone or destroy the world. You’ll see that if you observe. And I…”
His voice suddenly became resolute.
“I’ve left the Forest of Roots twice. If enduring the Seed of Darkness is a miracle, then I’ve had two miracles, so there should be a third.”
Terra shook her head.
“Miracles are chance occurrences. You might have been lucky.”
“It’s not chance. It’s something I achieved. And I will achieve it once more.”
Helmut’s black eyes darkened, and a faint aura of Vis began to emanate from him.
Vis is the will and power of a swordsman. It is also a manifestation of mental fortitude. It was proof of endless sword swings and overcoming trials.
Helmut’s age was far younger compared to Darien. Yet, he had reached Darien’s level.
It wasn’t something that could be explained merely by the Seed of Darkness or natural talent.
Everything he had experienced so far had tempered him, finally completing the sword named Helmut. While a human may bend, a sword does not.
“You’re dangerous, but the possibility of danger you possess can’t overcome your other possibilities. No one can decide that in advance, not even I.”
Terra smiled. It was a gentle smile like calm ripples, similar to yet different from Sian’s.
The earth had the power of embrace, and she, as the earth’s spirit mage, resembled the earth.
She looked at Helmut and gained some understanding from his answer. For now, that was enough.
“Then, let’s have a meal. I’ll prepare it quickly, so please wait a moment.”
And as she walked towards the house, she gave a light wink.
“Welcome to Rodril.”
Azer, who was about to follow her, tapped Sian’s waist and whispered.
“But with so many beautiful women around, how come none of them is your girlfriend?”
He clicked his tongue as if in disapproval. Sian, feeling upset, was about to retort but collected himself.
Despite not lacking popularity throughout his academy days, he had always stuck close to Asuka like a best friend. His golden academy days had flown by bleakly.
But now it seemed that Asuka himself had entered a flower garden.
Back at the academy, he had been a guy who denied his own feelings to the point where one might wonder if he was truly an idiot.
But as he entered the Forest of Roots and continued to stay close to Charlotte, he naturally began to follow his heart.
Although Charlotte’s feelings were unknown, from Sian’s perspective, Charlotte had quite a simple personality.
She was attracted to men stronger than herself. And she had a somewhat dull and patient side, so she tended to receive Asuka’s advances well despite his bluntness.
At this rate, there was a high possibility that things would work out well between Asuka and Charlotte.
‘But it won’t be that easy. I’ll make sure to meddle plenty.’
Sian unnecessarily fired up his determination. It was a manifestation of beautiful friendship.
