Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 33 (Part 2):
After Phien left, Finn returned from receiving some quick instructions from Tanya.
“Wow, to fight against demonic beasts on my first mission, I’m so nervous I won’t be able to sleep.”
Trembling, Finn patted his chest, while Helmut looked at him as if he were a heavy burden.
In his own way, Finn was something like a benefactor. And now, he was officially under Helmut’s responsibility.
Finn had another reason for not being able to sleep properly.
That night, they were attacked three more times, exactly at two-hour intervals.
Keeping watch was almost pointless. Just as they tried to catch a bit of sleep, they were attacked again, forcing everyone to sleep with their swords in hand.
Uter ground his teeth in frustration.
“These damn creatures.”
“They’re filled with malice because they harbor magic.”
“We might as well leave as soon as it gets light since we can’t sleep anyway.”
Phien made a decision. Miles and the Tariq Mercenary Corps had come to the same conclusion.
Their goal was to leave the forest as quickly as possible. Sean let out a deep sigh.
“Sometimes, this is what being a mercenary entails.”
“Once we get out of this cursed forest, let’s have a drink! Forget the mission, I need a drink!”
“Sounds good! I’m in too.”
In an effort to shake off their looming anxiety and fatigue, the mercenaries buoyed their spirits.
Helmut quietly placed his hand on the hilt of his sword tucked at his waist.
The time to draw his sword was near, and Helmut eagerly awaited that moment.
“To the wagons!”
Tanya raised her voice sharply. Helmut, taking Finn by surprise, positioned him with his back against the wagon.
With the wagon behind them and mercenaries beyond it, no creature could approach from the rear.
The horses pulling the wagons were all well-trained. They were quite calm, as their vision was blocked and they couldn’t smell the beasts due to the magical dust.
The mercenaries did not allow beasts near the wagons. However, Helmut noticed that their defensive line had been slightly pushed back since yesterday.
‘The bastard is watching me.’
He felt a gaze on him. The creature had chosen this passive approach likely due to Helmut’s influence.
It was wary of Helmut, a human who had dared to threaten the demonic beast!
Since he revealed himself, the area around the Pace Mercenary Corps, where they were located, seemed to be targeted more by beasts.
‘He must want to test me.’
‘Considering the number of monsters it has deployed, it must be the ruler of this region.’
Strong demonic beasts can dominate a territory. While common in the Forest of Roots, it was debatable whether that monkey beast was strong enough to compare to Elaga.
It would be a disservice to Elaga to place it in the same category.
‘If there’s no stronger creature than that monkey beast, this should be easy.’
Helmut had paused his Vis training, but his body was nearing peak condition. It was almost as if he had been resting all this while.
‘Just come at me.’
How much would the skin of such a large monkey be worth in the human world?
A cold smile flickered across Helmut’s lips. But now was the time to deal with the smaller creatures.
Even with the rear blocked, the sky was open. Helmut swung his sword at the creatures falling from the densely packed trees above.
“Arrgh!”
Finn screamed as if he had been stabbed himself, clutching his head.
Because of that, he missed seeing Helmut’s sword slice through a monster’s head at the speed of light.
With a sound more like a light brush than a clash, the cleanly separated heads of the creature thudded to the ground.
In one breath, Helmut had cut down two demonic beasts and then slapped Finn across the face. Smack!
“Get a grip! This is just the beginning.”
It wasn’t out of frustration that he wanted to hit Finn.
“Huh? What?”
Without another word, Helmut launched another attack. More creatures were leaping down from above.
As he fended them off, they landed and charged at him.
The battle began in earnest on all fronts, filled with the sound of combat.
Seeing Helmut fight calmly by his side, Finn finally snapped out of his daze.
“Ahhh!”
Finn swung his sword like an axe, as if he had forgotten all the swordsmanship he had learned so far.
Fortunately, some of the creatures fell to his clumsy strikes.
Helmut moved as efficiently as possible. He wasn’t showing off his Vis, but he didn’t hide his swordsmanship either, given the circumstances.
No mercenary from the Pace Corps had the luxury to properly watch Helmut. They were all too busy fighting for their lives.
The convoy continued to move forward, with everyone gritting their teeth and following the wagons. Any of them could have fallen in battle without it being a surprise.
Meanwhile, the front had a bit more breathing room. Since they couldn’t abandon the rear wagons, they couldn’t move very fast, but focusing on killing one or two monsters that charged at them was manageable.
“It’s blatantly targeting us. Have they decided to break through at one point?”
During a brief lull in the assault, Phien muttered.
This convoy was actually divided between the Tariq and Pace Mercenary Corps.
With fewer numbers on the Pace side, and the two second-rank mercenaries belonging to the Tariq Corps, they were unlikely to come to the rear’s aid. Their priority would naturally be their own safety.
Moreover, given the incident with Kelop, the Tariq Mercenary Corps harbored resentment towards the Pace Corps. Cooperation was unlikely.
Knowing this, the beasts would focus their attack on one side. It’s easier to defeat the enemy in detail.
‘Unfortunately, it seems we’ve encountered a demonic beast with intelligence.’
Sweat ran down Phien’s back. He had been leading the charge, looking after his mercenaries and swinging his sword.
He bore no ill will towards the Tariq Corps. They had their clients and wagons to protect. Was it good luck or bad? Three of their number had already died.
‘Just hope no casualties occur.’
With fervent hope, Phien continued to fight.
Despite the endless battle, an end always comes. They just had to survive until then.
