Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 343 (Part 2):
Chaaak! Kagang!
“Oh-ho.”
Sand grains mixed with spines whipped at his face.
But Luke Yeager, who had drawn his sword to block the attack aimed at him, grinned.
Of all people, it had targeted him. The beast had taken the bait perfectly.
Swoooosh.
From the collapsing sand, a giant form emerged.
A furry body the color of the sand, eight eyes glowing red.
“A spider, huh.”
Sshhk, sshhk! The creature felt something was off. The instant it attacked, this human should have been skewered by its fangs and killed.
But as though expecting it, the human had effortlessly defended against its attack. This was not a move an ordinary human could make.
Instead of sensing fear, the human before it exuded confidence.
A certain energy rose from the human’s blade. It was the power called Vis.
Raising his voice, Luke Jaeger gestured grandly.
“You’ve come all by yourself without bringing any underlings. Come on everyone, let’s treat our guest!”
Piyooooo! Bang! Puh-pung!
Signal flares soared skyward, releasing bright light and loud noise.
Every Palma Knight present drew their swords.
Only then did the demonic beast realize who they were. This was a trick it had never encountered in the memories inherited from the Red Scorpion.
Sshhk, sshhk! The five swords lunged at the now-flustered creature. Luke Jaeger declared loudly,
“Today is the day your fate is sealed!”
*
A large-scale pursuit unfolded in the desert. More precisely, a large contingent was pursuing a single demonic beast.
The giant, yellowish-brown spider broke through the encirclement by kicking up sand, then sprinted across the desert on its swift legs.
Summoning other demonic beasts it controlled to block the path behind it.
Yet the Palma Knights managed to keep up. They had a mage skilled in tracking demonic energy with them. It was never easy to find a hidden demonic beast in this vast desert, but they had prepared well; now that it had shown itself, they would not let it escape.
“Damn, it’s fast.”
One knight gasped for breath as he muttered. Without horses, he had to channel Vis into his legs to chase after the spider.
The others were in a similar state.
Luke Jaeger led the charge, sword in hand, at the very front.
‘I must catch it no matter what.’
This creature had learning ability, so it wouldn’t fall for the same trick twice. Who knew how it would hide and prey on humans next time? They had to deal with it now.
But the other Palma Knights couldn’t run as fast as Luke. He pulled ahead, almost as if leaving the others behind.
From the lead position, he could see the demonic beast’s back.
He might be able to catch it. If he lunged now and cut off one of its legs…
Suddenly, the demonic beast came to a halt. There was a flash of light ahead. Something like an ashen streak flickered.
It was an unfamiliar yet somehow familiar energy—the power known as Vis. The spider’s body collapsed to the ground.
Thud. The sandy floor swallowed the impact of the spider crashing down. Luke Jaeger had no idea what had just happened.
He approached the fallen spider. In the blurred vision of the dusty air, he saw a figure.
“What the—is that…?”
Luke Jaeger widened his eyes.
A young man stood there. He contrasted sharply against the desert.
Black hair and black eyes as dark as if filled with the essence of the void, and white skin. He had a somewhat imposing aura. His noble appearance—by Basor’s standards, delicate as a woman’s yet perfectly symmetrical—was striking.
Luke Jaeger felt he had seen that face somewhere before. Their gazes met. The young man with black eyes suddenly spoke.
“You are quite luky.”
The words carried many implications. His voice was deeper than before, but the underlying tone was unchanged.
A chill ran down Luke Jaeger’s spine. Instinctively, he recognized him. At once, he shouted,
“Hyde!”
The other calmly replied,
“That’s not the name I told you last time.”
Only after a moment did Luke Jaeger recall the name the young man had last revealed to him.
“…Helmut.”
He was surprised that he remembered.
But some memories, however brief, are etched so deeply that they last a lifetime. To Luke Jaeger, Helmut was just such a presence.
And that very Helmut had returned after four years, standing here in this unexpected place, in an entirely unforeseen way.
