Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 38 (Part 2):
Helmut savored the victory. How long had he trained for this moment?
“Helmut!”
Members of the Pace Mercenary Corps arrived late, rushing towards him. Helmut’s lips moved.
“It’s over.”
His voice was indifferent. The Pace mercenaries who reached him were shocked to find the monkey beast’s corpse.
“You did this?”
“You killed it by yourself?”
“Yes, check the surroundings.”
Helmut gestured nonchalantly.
The Pace mercenaries quickly recovered their wits. They started scouting the area.
They had thought to hold out until they arrived, but the Tariq Mercenary Corps had suffered near total annihilation in a very short time.
Only the carriage remained. The corpses of the demonic beasts and the Tariq mercenaries were haphazardly mixed together.
Phien spoke after surveying the scene.
“It seems the formation was broken. That’s why they couldn’t properly resist and ended up like this.”
“Either died running or fighting.”
“I don’t see any Rank 2 mercenaries.”
“They probably ran off together. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have ended like this.”
“No honor or responsibility, those bastards.”
The Pace mercenaries exchanged words with sour expressions.
Even if they had betrayed and left them, it was unsettling to see fellow mercenaries meet such a gruesome end.
Moreover, the masterminds, Paul and Max, had already fled.
While inspecting the surroundings, Uter shouted.
“There’s someone under the carriage!”
A Rank 4 mercenary from the Tariq Corps had survived, relatively unscathed.
Apparently, he was unconscious, so the beasts hadn’t sensed him.
Slap! They slapped him awake, and he scrambled up in a panic.
“Am I, am I dead?”
He was confused, seeing the Pace mercenaries he thought were dead, unsure if he was in the afterlife. Uter smacked him a few more times until he came to his senses.
“You’re damn lucky. You must’ve used up all your luck for a lifetime here.”
Uter declared.
“Isn’t that true for us as well?”
Sean muttered, approaching a person sprawled nearby. He checked the person’s condition closely before shouting.
“Found another survivor here!”
It was someone from the Butan Trading Company, who had been thrown by the monkey beast. Despite hitting the ground hard enough to be fatal, he seemed to have miraculously survived.
“He’s breathing, but looks like he’s got a few broken places.”
“Being alive is what matters.”
“Hey, coward! Come and carry this guy. If he’s alive, he owes us a meal.”
“Who’s a coward…!”
Finn started to retort loudly but then bit his tongue.
The recovered Rank 4 mercenary from the Tariq Corps quickly approached.
“Damn, just yesterday, everyone was alive.”
Maros muttered in dismay. Helmut pointed towards a carriage lying on its side.
“We should check there too.”
He had sensed someone alive inside the carriage when they arrived. If they hadn’t died of a heart attack, they might still be alive.
Climbing onto the carriage, Tanya shouted.
“There’s someone alive here!”
It was Miles, who had fainted. Having witnessed the Butan Trading Company people being devoured by the beasts one by one, he had experienced extreme terror.
Even an experienced merchant couldn’t remain calm in the face of such horrific death.
“Should we wake him?”
Phien hesitated for a moment before shaking his head.
“Let’s leave him be for now. We need to take care of our client. He’s the one paying us, after all.”
“But wasn’t he the one who decided to abandon us and flee?”
“That’s something to be discussed later. Look at his face. We need him conscious to talk about money.”
They had wanted to beat him up before meeting him, but seeing his pale, unconscious face, they felt somewhat sorry for him.
“We need to check the carriage and transfer the luggage from the damaged one.”
“So, you plan to continue with the contract?”
Tanya asked. It was her first mission where both mind and body had been pushed to their limits. She longed for a hot bath back home.
“If we abandon the contract, it’s all for nothing.”
Phien looked towards the unconscious Miles.
“Ultimately, that’ll depend on how well things go with Miles.”
“Right, let’s quickly wrap things up here and move on.”
The area was littered with blood and bodies. Although it was still too early for decay due to the forest’s low temperature, the smell would soon become unbearable.
Phien clapped his hands to gather everyone’s attention.
“Alright, everyone. Let’s finish checking for survivors and get ready to leave! And if there are any intact beast corpses, let’s collect those too.”
As the mercenaries busied themselves, Helmut muttered.
“Ah, this.”
“What, what is it?”
Everyone reacted sensitively to Helmut’s muttering as if a major problem had arisen. Helmut said seriously.
“I cut through the core of the big one. It could have been worth something.”
He had been thinking about salvaging the monkey beast’s body but ended up cutting through the core in his haste to finish the battle. The more he thought about it, the more regretful he felt.
Tanya looked at Helmut with a half-hearted expression and replied,
“Well, there might still be usable parts, right? Finn, go check it out!”
“Me, me?”
“Yes, you. Hurry and see if there’s anything salvageable!”
“A…Alright, alright.”
Though dead, Finn approached the bisected monkey beast hesitantly, as if still frightened.
