Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 38 (Part1):
The attacking demonic beasts were beginning to shrink back.
When many attack at once, it’s typical to suffer at least a scratch, but there was no opening. It was as if they were surrounded by a barrier.
Taking only one or two steps from his spot, Helmut cut them down without even being touched. His sword strikes were swift and powerful, as if the concept of a blind spot did not exist.
‘Has it been about 2 minutes?’
Helmut mused. Now, only a few of them were left. As their numbers dwindled, they cowered, watching for the leader’s signal.
Demonic beasts dominated by magical energy. The weaker ones are controlled almost to the level of brainwashing. This control often overpowers their instincts.
Hesitation meant the controlling force of the monkey beast was weakening. It crouched still in one place.
‘What is it doing?’
In a moment, Helmut sensed it. Magical energy rapidly converging towards its heart.
It planned to release its power in one go, intending to kill Helmut. It would lose most of its magic, but its minions were almost all dead. There was no one left to challenge the leader.
-Kieeeeee.
With a growl similar to a roar, it lifted its head. Its violet face was turning dark blue.
A murderous intent exploded from its fiercely distorted face. A chilling presence compressed the space around it, and the magic became significantly stronger.
In an instant, the beast gained enough strength to overwhelm Helmut’s defenses.
This could be a threat to him. A slight tension made his heart race.
‘Fighting by drawing out its power might be advantageous.’
Helmut frowned as he felt the presence of Pace Mercenary Corps members approaching. They seemed to have rushed here due to the unfavorable situation, leaving their comrades behind. It would be troublesome if their client died.
‘They’ll just get in the way if they try to help.’
He had never fought while protecting someone else. Nor had he ever cared to.
‘I need to end this quickly.’
Helmut made his decision. And his decision coincided with the beast’s attack.
Crack! A giant hand harshly clawed at the spot where he stood, leaving a gouge as if a shovel had dug through it.
‘Regrettable.’
The only regret was not being able to enjoy the battle more.
Dodging to the side, Helmut thrust his sword towards the beast’s flank.
The beast raised its arm to block. Clang! It was like hitting a rock. The recoil made his grip tingle.
-Kiiii?
The monkey beast looked at him with eyes red with mockery.
‘Can’t pierce through with just this?’
Helmut did not lose his composure and exerted more strength into his sword hand.
A gray aura surged powerfully. The fur and skin began to peel away slowly.
But the monkey beast did not stay passive. It stretched its other long arm, attempting to sweep Helmut away.
Whoosh! The sound of slicing air was fierce. Helmut ducked down and rushed forward.
For a larger beast, the area below was closer to a blind spot than above.
The surprised monkey beast crossed its arms. Being caught in that violent embrace would crush him.
‘It’s gotten faster.’
There was no time to aim for the neck. He stepped on the beast’s chest and leaped up.
Thump! He spun in the air and landed behind it.
As the beast turned around, its arm extended. The thick black nails were charged with magic, becoming as sharp as a real sword.
Whoosh! Not just the direct strike, but the wind it created also cut through the air. Helmut’s old clothes were shredded, but his skin was unscathed.
“I don’t have many clothes to begin with.”
Helmut glared at the beast, annoyed. It moved faster than expected, making it hard to land a hit.
While Helmut’s sword was blocked by the beast’s magic, the beast could pierce through Helmut’s defenses.
Human flesh, no matter how reinforced, has its limits. Dodging was necessary.
Suddenly, the beast jumped back, gathering its magic centrally. It curled up, concentrating strength in its legs.
Helmut intuitively knew what would come next.
Thud! The beast kicked off the ground and launched itself at him. Transformed into a spherical shape, it rushed towards him with the force of a piece of metal. If hit in this state, it would feel like being struck by a falling metal boulder.
This kind of attack was familiar.
‘Naho did this.’
Back then, he had been unable to move and lost consciousness, but now the size and speed were different. He could dodge. The thought flashed through his mind like lightning. Helmut decided.
‘I’ll confront it head-on.’
There was no time to delay. It was an opportunity to end it in one strike. Dodging was for when the enemy’s offensive was overwhelming.
Strength against strength. Magic against Vis, attack against attack. When two swords clash, the weaker one shatters.
Helmut was confident in his victory.
Whoosh! The giant body soared through the air. Crushing the atmosphere, it flew towards Helmut with terrifying force, like a giant throwing a boulder.
Helmut aimed his sword. His black pupils stared down the enemy with unwavering focus. A perfect stance without a hint of disorder.
Within the mass of magic flying towards him, he saw a crack.
Inside the body, in the heart, a budding darkness. From there, magic stretched out. A sliver of a gap in the raging magic, piercing through to the inside!
This was the vulnerability present in all beings. Cutting through to become a single point. Helmut’s sword moved in a straight line, as fast as lightning.
Crunch! The sound of something dense being sliced. Silence engulfed the surroundings.
Helmut stood there. The spherical body split into two halves in front of him.
The two halves rolled past Helmut to either side. Crash!
As black smoke rose from the motionless torso, all movement ceased. It was dead.
Helmut quietly sheathed his sword. As the leader died, the few remaining lesser beasts fled in panic.
It was a perfect victory achieved by Helmut’s own hands. A brief euphoria filled his chest.
It feels good. The feeling of winning a fight.
