Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 442 (Part 2):
Alea urged Igrelle.
“Let’s get a bit closer.”
[It feels really bad…]
Even as she spoke, Igrelle obediently lowered her altitude.
After a moment’s thought, defiance kicked in. Annoyed at being swayed by instinct, she suppressed her senses by force.
This time, closer than before.
[That part definitely has weaker holy power. We might be able to get closer.]
Through the gap where the black circle met the sacred barrier, the Forest of Roots seemed to flicker into view.
If they were lucky, they might catch a glimpse deep into the Forest of Roots. Even a fleeting moment could be useful.
“Then get as close as you can, please. But only as far as it’s safe.”
At Alea’s words, Igrelle flapped its wings slowly and replied.
[Alright, let’s do it.]
It was a tense moment.
The sacred barrier always instilled a sense of danger in them. They couldn’t help but feel on edge.
Igrelle’s body gradually approached the uppermost edge of the sacred barrier.
Just twenty steps by human measure. As the sacred barrier grew unstable, so did the demonic energy staining it black.
A fierce force clashed violently with the sacred power.
Not a massive collision, but a relentless, intense struggle.
The black circle was winning, but resistance persisted.
“Look inside.”
Through the swirling gap between the two forces, glimpses of the Forest of Roots appeared momentarily.
Down below, to the ground. Too far for the naked eye, but with magic…
Heike and Alea, without needing to decide who went first, focused their minds.
That was when it happened.
A glint flickered in the black hole, as large as Igrelle’s body. As if it had finally noticed their presence.
Not a radiant light, but a glossy blackness. An eerie glow.
That glow struck Igrelle’s eyes head-on.
Igrelle’s body flinched. In an instant, her body lurched backward.
The passengers, nearly thrown off, clung desperately to Igrelle’s feathers.
Sian shouted, almost screaming.
“Igrelle!”
But what followed was a ferocious flurry of wingbeats.
A dizzying sensation of floating in the air.
Demonic energy surged toward them in an instant.
The demonic energy rising from Igrelle’s body felt like an attack spell.
Each protected themselves from the demonic energy in their own way, using magic or Vis, whatever was at hand.
Not only the demonic energy rising from below but also a tremendous wind battered them from above and the sides.
It felt like attacks were coming from all directions. Like being caught in a whirlwind, they were disoriented.
If they hadn’t been tied with ropes, they would’ve been flung off long ago.
That would mean falling onto the sacred barrier.
Even for mages, maintaining flight magic in this state was nearly impossible, so they had to hold on.
Igrelle’s frenzied wingbeats gradually slowed.
When they came to their senses, they were far from the sacred barrier’s center.
They had reached its outer edge. In just a short moment.
An explosive escape fueled by a surge of demonic energy.
As the barrier beneath them ended, Igrelle plummeted sharply.
At a diving angle.
Just as the ground neared, she spread her wings wide to slow down, but it wasn’t enough.
*Crash!*
A tremendous impact struck them. Dust billowed thickly. The ground cratered as if a meteor had struck.
In the center, Igrelle lay sprawled, panting.
[Ugh… that hurts.]
Everyone quickly leapt off Igrelle’s body.
They had miraculously held on and made it this far.
The reckless landing was so jarring that even Igrelle felt pain.
Though Igrelle’s body had absorbed much of the impact, if they were ordinary humans, their bones would’ve shattered, and they’d have passed out.
[You crazy fool! Have you lost your mind?]
Elaga, now on the ground, raged wildly.
So furious that his raised tail and snarling roar echoed like his true beastly bellow.
As a land-bound beast fearful of the air, Elaga had nearly fainted.
If he hadn’t emptied his stomach before riding Igrelle, he might’ve soiled himself.
Elaga barely restrained the urge to attack Igrelle on the spot.
“What in the world was that?”
Heike sighed.
Even for an Archmage like her, it was a chilling crisis.
Amidst it, she had struggled to maintain a barrier to protect the group.
[Ow, my head’s spinning. That was close.]
Igrelle shook her head on the ground.
They had narrowly avoided a disaster, but they couldn’t blame Igrelle.
she hadn’t done it on purpose.
Alea, pale-faced, asked for confirmation.
“What was the problem?”
