Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 470 (Part 2):
While Baharek was curled up on the far side, separated from the humans, Igrelle and Elaga were by the humans’ side. The contrast was peculiar.
Igrelle in human form was sitting right in the center, staring into the bonfire.
She seemed to have no worries at all, marveling at lighting a bonfire for the first time in her life.
Elaga was beside Helmut. As if that had always been his spot. Helmut leaned his back against Elaga’s fluffy fur.
“Your fur is still as abundant as ever.”
[Demonic beasts don’t get hair loss.]
Saying something that would make bald people envious, Elaga stared down at Helmut.
Perhaps because a being familiar to him was influencing him. His mind was clearer than ever.
Even though he had eaten plenty of the Root of Rosetta pills, in this state, there seemed no need to worry about his mind being seized by the Demon King.
Elaga asked sullenly.
[Why, does it remind you of the old days?]
In his childhood, Helmut had slept buried deep in Elaga’s fur like this.
When leaning against his warm body and fluffy fur, the forest’s chill couldn’t invade him.
There had been a life where being with Elaga was everyday routine. That life occupied a large part of Helmut’s life.
“I don’t really miss those old days.”
[That makes sense. Back then, you were weak. You still are now, though.]
Helmut’s eyebrow subtly rose.
“After defeating the Demon King, let’s agree you won’t say that weak nonsense anymore.”
Wouldn’t it be unfair to become a hero and still get scolded for being weak?
But Elaga slyly changed the subject.
[After defeating the Demon King, you’ll be free too.]
He must want to keep nagging Helmut. Helmut said indifferently.
“Who knows. The sacred barrier will disappear. They won’t be able to send those with the Seed of Darkness to the Forest of Roots anymore.”
Instead, they might try to eliminate them all. Since they defeated the Demon King, they could come out saying to cleanly sort out everything with demonic energy.
Even if they closed the gate to the demon world and defeated the Demon King, it would take a long time to eradicate the remaining demonic energy.
In any case, there was no law saying Helmut would be guaranteed a smooth life ahead. Even if he became a hero.
“It doesn’t matter now.”
He could push through with power. Through this matter, Helmut would gain justification for himself. It was justification to wield power.
“What will you do after it’s all over, Elaga?”
He could stay in his territory, or follow along.
For Elaga, who had lived his whole life in the Forest of Roots, changing locations might be fine too.
He seemed to enjoy being in cat form.
Even if not Renosa, Baden where Susan and Sarah were would be a good option.
Elaga looked down at Helmut with calm eyes.
[Who knows. It’s something to think about after defeating that Demon King or whatever first.]
Exploring the human world would be exciting for him too. But…… would he be able to enjoy it again?
There was something Elaga hadn’t told Helmut.
A thousand years ago, at that time. When the Forest of Roots was created. Memories from back then had suddenly resurfaced recently.
Memories from a distant past. He had a childhood too. A time when he was a cub leopard weaker than Helmut.
‘Whether Demon King or Lumen, tampering with others’ subconscious is the same.’
Because of that, Elaga felt like he knew what he could do and what he must do.
Perhaps the reason he was friendly toward humans despite being a demonic beast was due to that subconscious influence.
It didn’t matter. Elaga had chosen his side. He was prepared to fight and resolved.
As a brief silence flowed, Alea, having finished her conversation with Heike, approached.
Plopping down beside Helmut, she asked before leaning against Elaga’s body.
“You do wash your body often, right?”
[……Demonic energy repels impurities? Have you ever seen me looking dirty.]
“Then it’s fine.”
Elaga narrowed his eyes and stared at the annoying head leaning toward him.
Still, it was fortunate there was someone to take care of the first human he raised. Personality aside, she was pretty and strong.
As Helmut and Alea exchanged bits of conversation, the night deepened.
After this night, everyone here would face the decisive battle.
Sian and Asuka, Luke Yeager as well, strengthened their bonds among themselves before falling asleep at some point.
Though the place was the Forest of Roots, the rest was as cozy as could be.
