Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 473 (Part 2):
Threatening assaults continued countless times thereafter.
Along their path, mountains of demonic beast corpses were piling up.
“If this keeps up, the demonic beasts of the Forest of Roots might go extinct.”
How long had they fought? Helmut muttered, gripping his tingling hand. The humans on the barrier side would have it a bit easier.
But the immediate problem was them.
Slash, fight, advance. There was no moment to rest.
No one uttered weak complaints. They simply pressed toward their goal.
None on the carriage had ever fought so fiercely, nor faced enemies in such overwhelming numbers.
At best, Helmut recalled the memory of the holy knights charging madly during the last holy war.
‘Demonic beasts or the Temple, it makes no difference.’
No, the demonic beasts were easier. Even a graze from the temple’s strikes had been threatening.
Helmut glanced at Levant. As if their past enmity meant nothing, he was fighting diligently.
The power of the holy sword glowing gold was no less than Helmut’s in this Forest of Roots.
‘A good addition to our strength.’
Regaining his breath, Helmut began slashing demonic beasts again.
Kwaduk!
A demonic beast with its eye pierced screeched as it tumbled away.
Kieeee.
Hours. No, who knew how many hours had passed. At some point, Helmut thought the number of demonic beasts had decreased.
In a state of extreme focus, swinging his sword, Helmut finally looked back at his companions.
He wasn’t used to protecting someone. He had barely paid attention, but everyone seemed unharmed.
Though physically a bit fatigued, their eyes were still vibrant.
“Without the magic sword, I’d have been in big trouble.”
Asuka admitted honestly. He would have been nothing but baggage to the group.
But as expected, money compensated for lacking skill.
Levina, having recovered her holy power, infused vitality into the group.
Alea, Heike, and Sian replenished their magi using magic stones.
Igrelle, unable to benefit from any of it, plopped down in the very back seat.
“Is it because I’m in a human body? Why does it feel so tiring.”
[You were just riding in the carriage, and you’re complaining about being tired?]
Baharek grumbled. Hadn’t he been the one fighting while pulling the carriage?
Biting and swatting away the ones charging from the front while running hadn’t been tiring. It had only been frustrating because he couldn’t destroy the carriage in the process.
Igrelle replied half-heartedly.
“Good work.”
[Were there only this many demonic beasts in Roots? Why did it end so soon?]
Elaga, having wiped out all the nearby ones, returned to the side of the carriage.
There were no more demonic beasts left to break through.
Despite ending so many lives, Elaga’s fur remained pure white.
Not a speck of blood or flesh clung to it, as if not even dust had settled.
[Feels refreshing.]
Absorbing their demonic energy had only made him stronger, if anything; he wasn’t tired at all.
Alea tossed Rosetta’s pills to the three demonic beasts.
“Here.”
The scent of Rosetta still filled the surroundings.
Still, they had to take them. They would be getting closer to the Demon King.
The carriage continued moving. Stopping would only give the enemy time to prepare.
Those in the carriage took turns resting, eating, and keeping watch.
Helmut asked Elaga.
“How much further?”
[About half left, I’d say. We’ve come farther than expected?]
Though not at full speed, they had maintained considerable pace. There were no more swamp areas like before.
They were racing through blackened forest and earth. The path wasn’t flat, but Baharek, pulling the carriage, was unfazed by the roughness.
Following the path flattened by his paws, the carriage naturally traveled a somewhat compacted route.
Alea looked at Helmut and said.
“It doesn’t seem like it’ll be smooth from here.”
There had to be a reason there were no demonic beasts here. After a brief sigh, they soon realized why.
In the wide-open front, a translucent black barrier reminiscent of a smaller sacred barrier.
And crouching before it was an overwhelmingly vast number of demonic beasts.
Seeing the ones baring fangs and glaring with glowing eyes, Helmut realized one fact.
“It’s a barrier. The demonic beasts earlier were guarding the barrier.”
Alea nodded.
“That’s why there were no demonic beasts in the middle ground between barriers.”
Passing the first barrier led to the second. Damn, there were so many.
Moreover, these ones were larger and had stronger demonic energy.
Above all, that black barrier.
Asuka asked.
“What the hell is that? Can we even pass through?”
“It seems like a barrier made of magi.”
Sian explained simply.
Heike turned to High Priest Levina.
“If not, we’ll have to open a path with sacred magic.”
The Demon King was quite skilled at imitation.
To construct a barrier resembling a sacred barrier.
But they had passed sacred barriers three times. What couldn’t they overcome?
