Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 474 (Part 2):
“Baharek?”
Heike called his name.
[This… This isn’t good.]
Baharek, who had suddenly stopped dead in his tracks, groaned.
[I can’t… go any further.]
Even Rosetta’s Pills were useless.
The sound from the barrier was growing stronger. A ringing filled their eardrums.
It wasn’t something that could be blocked by stopping the sound. A resonance that dug into their nerves.
Baharek endured the stabbing headache. But there was a limit to endurance.
He knew. The moment he touched that black barrier, he would no longer be able to hold on.
The clarity that had returned after eating Rosetta’s Pills was clouding over.
His demonic nature told him the moment to stop.
Kwaduk! Peok!
“I can’t get any closer either.”
Igrelle spoke up next as she smashed demonic beasts. A headache like her head was being torn apart. It was still bearable, but she couldn’t cross the barrier.
If she went any further, she would lose herself.
[Weaklings!]
Elaga shouted, whipping the demonic beasts swarming at the carriage with his tail.
[If we stop here, even the ones we passed will swarm us all at once! Decide quickly!]
Unlike Baharek and Igrelle, he still seemed to have plenty of leeway.
Baharek turned his head toward the carriage and said.
[We’ll handle the demonic beasts. We’ll watch your back, so pass through the black barrier.]
“You guys keep going. Once you pass… we’ll escape outside the central region.”
Alea immediately moved to untie the ropes from Baharek’s body.
She handed Igrelle a magic pouch filled with Rosetta’s Pills.
“Move with Baharek. It’ll be trouble if you get controlled and return to the central region.”
“Yeah, I’ll try to hold out. Once we get out of here, it should be fine.”
Igrelle wrinkled her nose.
She nimbly climbed onto Baharek’s back.
[What the? You crazy bird!]
“Watch your mouth. We have to stick together, don’t we? Here, you eat this too.”
Igrelle stuffed a heap of Rosetta’s Pills into the beak of Baharek, who had turned his head as if to bite, mouth wide open.
Baharek chewed the pills with a displeased expression.
[I won’t care if you fall off.]
“I’ll hold on myself, so don’t worry. Now, you guys go quickly! Succeed and survive!”
Igrelle waved her hand, pink hair fluttering. It was a statement carrying the most important thing.
The party’s formation changed. Elaga took Baharek’s place with a grimace as if he’d bitten into a bug.
He knew what he had to do. Ropes quickly wrapped around his body.
Now, instead of Baharek, he had to pull the carriage. Crushing the beasts that charged from the front.
[Damn it.]
Baharek and Igrelle guarded the rear of the party.
In the brief delay, the demonic beasts they had passed were swarming back. They had to hurry.
But the black barrier wasn’t far.
Elaga kicked off the ground and started immediately. The carriage, lifted by his entire body, shook.
Kugung!
The humans on the carriage staggered in unison. The shock churned their stomachs.
Helmut opened his mouth.
“Elaga, if you run like that.”
[Fight as best you can! If I don’t run like this, won’t they stick to us?]
He was right. As the carriage leaped like a living thing, the charging demonic beasts all fell away.
Of course, it was just as hard for the humans riding on it to keep their balance. But they could still swing their swords somehow.
While holding on not to be flung off the carriage.
“Ugh! I feel like I’m going to be sick.”
Asuka whined. Less than five minutes after Elaga started running like that, the faces of the party turned pale.
It was less than when riding on Elaga’s back, but it was hard to call the ride comfortable.
The only consolation was that the black barrier was getting closer.
[But how are we going to cross the barrier? It’s a barrier of demonic energy.]
Elaga asked. Being a demonic beast, he had no problem crossing it.
The issue was the Demon King’s control infiltrating his mind, but he thought he could endure it.
But the humans were the problem.
For Elaga to break it, he would have to absorb the barrier’s demonic energy, making it easier for the Demon King to infiltrate his mind in the process.
So this was the humans’ task.
“We’ll try… with magic to break the barrier.”
“There are no demonic beasts right in front of the barrier. Let’s get there.”
Following Alea, Heike quickly spoke.
As she said, there was an empty space about twenty steps from the barrier where no demonic beasts were.
It seemed they couldn’t freely pass through and come out either.
Alea and Heike, who had used magic to free the party from motion sickness, looked at each other.
Just that was enough to know what each had to do.
Heike opened her mouth.
“First strike is yours. Second is mine.”
“Not together?”
“Two consecutive shocks are more useful for shaking the barrier than one strong impact.”
“Alright, let’s do that. The barrier’s strength…”
Alea used magic to assess the barrier’s state. If they poured mana into attack magic, it seemed they could open a gap for the carriage to pass through for a moment.
That was enough.
As if Elaga’s rough driving had its effect, they reached the front of the barrier faster than expected.
Elaga really got right up to the nose of the barrier.
Frowning at the ziiing sound digging into his eardrums, he waited.
[I’ll crouch here, so break it quickly!]
The rear of the carriage was exposed to the demonic beasts, but as expected. They also stopped attacking, unable to get within a certain range of the barrier.
From far away, only the fierce sounds of Baharek and Igrelle smashing demonic beasts echoed.
Alea and Heike prepared their magic.
