Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 59 (Part 1):
The Academy’s written exam consists of five subjects: history, mathematics, language, general knowledge, and ethics. The Academy provides equal educational opportunities. The tuition fee is expensive, but if you achieve excellent grades in the entrance exam, it is refunded and scholarships are also given. The sponsorship system is well developed, so discontinuing studies due to tuition fees is not allowed. The Greta Academy is prestigious because it allows excellent students to continue their studies in any way.
‘Passing the exam is no easy feat.’
However, there was a unique full scorer in the entrance exam in the history of the Greta Academy. A diligent and enthusiastic student as well.
Because of this, the study went smoothly until the transfer exam. On the last day, Alea, who tested Helmut, was able to sigh with relief.
“There should be no problem passing at this rate.”
It’s a matter of pride for the top student of the Magic Department. Helmut didn’t learn in detail, but he studied focusing on the main points by attribute. Unless something unexpected happened, he would pass. Helmut looked at Alea blankly. It was a positive statement, quite different from her usual sarcastic remarks.
“Really. It’s only natural. After all, I was the one teaching you.”
Alea said proudly.
“Just review a bit tonight and get a good rest. You’ll have exams all day tomorrow. You need to be in the best condition.”
Then Alea handed something to Helmut. Helmut picked up a round, candy-like object wrapped in paper.
“Eat this.”
It was a sticky, white candy. When he put it in his mouth, it was extremely sweet and stuck to his teeth, but the taste wasn’t bad. Helmut, with a quizzical expression, asked,
“What is this?”
“It’s what you eat on the day of the exam. There’s a superstition that the stickiness helps the answers stick during the test.”
Even though he reluctantly took over the tutoring, Alea was quite faithful as a tutor. Seeing that he even took care of the candy on the last day. Helmut pondered for a moment, then said something appropriate at this time.
“Thank you for your hard work.”
“Just pass the exam. If you don’t want to waste my effort.”
Alea, who had given him a hard time, waved her hand and turned around neatly. This was the last lesson. Helmut returned to Ethan Kudrow’s mansion with the summary notes he had organized. Ethan, who had returned early, asked.
“Is your study going well?”
He felt a bit awkward as there wasn’t much he could do as an academy instructor. It was fortunate that Helmut seemed to find a solution of his own. Helmut nodded.
“Yes, Alea said there shouldn’t be any problems.”
There wasn’t much tension. He had already passed tests that risked his life. The Academy entrance exam felt similar to carrying out a mercenary mission. Still, he had worked hard, and he hoped for a good outcome.
“Well, that’s a relief.”
Ethan had seen Helmut practicing late at night several times. Although he had never seen him unleash his swordsmanship properly, Helmut’s training methods were enough to say that he was indeed a disciple of the Sword Saint.
‘Attending such an academy must feel somewhat mundane for him.’
Ethan, a swordsmanship instructor, didn’t think he could teach Helmut anything. He has the power to become a knight anywhere right now. He seemed like a floating oil, a person who didn’t easily mix with others, giving off a sharp and dangerous vibe. In that way, he would stand out wherever he went, like a jagged stone.
‘I can only hope he smoothens out through academy life.’
Fortunately, he seems to be adapting well from the start, as he seems to have become friends with Alea, who is also a jagged stone.
“Rest well. You need to wake up early tomorrow morning. The written exam starts at ten, so you should be at the exam venue by nine.”
“Yes.”
Helmut readily nodded.
The next morning, Helmut arrived at the entrance of the Greta Academy on time. The place he was guided to from there was a large lecture hall. There was a table with numbers and names written on the blackboard. They said to sit according to the table attached to the desk.
Inside, there were already nearly a hundred applicants gathered besides Helmut. They all looked like nobles, their outfits were luxurious, and many of them were larger and more muscular than their peers. There were occasionally women mixed in, but most of them were men. They exchanged glances or engaged in conversations with those they seemed to know, cautious of each other.
Helmut quickly realized that there was no one with skills equal to his among them.
‘Did they say there are eight vacancies in the second year?’
With about a hundred students per year, the academy has a total of six years of courses. As the years progress, the number of students decreases, and lower grades sometimes accept transfers. However, from the fourth year onward, they rarely accept transfers unless from other prestigious academies or under special circumstances. If someone enrolls around that time, it’s assumed that they attended Greta Academy for the graduation certificate.
‘Should I review until the exam?’
Helmut went to his seat and looked at the notes he brought. The things he learned from Alea were vividly remembered, as if each detail was etched into his mind. Helmut, who enjoyed the process of preparing for the transfer exam, found studying and exhaustion to be luxurious complaints. Growing up in an environment where he couldn’t properly learn anything, he appreciated the opportunity.
“Everyone, please take your seats.”
As the time arrived, supervisors entered and organized the applicants. The doors were firmly closed, and exam papers were distributed. When the supervisors announced the start of the exam, Helmut began reading the exam paper placed in front of him. It was a tense moment.
“Alright, stop! Please submit your exam papers.”
After the last exam ended at five in the afternoon, the applicants who had been solving problems all day let out sighs of exhaustion. Whether they did well or poorly, their expressions varied. The supervisor, checking the number of exam papers, spoke.
“The results of the written exam will be posted directly at the Academy’s main gate bulletin board at noon tomorrow. The practical exam will take place the next day. The time and location of the practical exam will be announced along with the results.”
Helmut’s face remained expressionless. He casually left the examination room and returned to the mansion. With nothing particular to do for a change and a head buzzing from a day of exams, he was flipping through the books in the mansion when Ethan Kudrow, who had finished work, asked.
“How did the exam go? I heard this one was quite difficult.”
“I think I did okay.”
