The Genius Programmer Turned Wizard - GPW Chapter 15: The Shallow Hollow (8) (Part 1)
Boom! Boom! Boom!
A golem approached with thunderous steps.
āWhy is there a golem here?ā
It was clear I had triggered some kind of special condition.
Something no one had ever touched in the game.
āBut something like thatā¦ā
Ah. I figured out the cause right away.
āAncient magic!ā
I had used the ancient magic from the stone tablet.
> Master, have you returned?
Thatās why it recognized me as its masterāor rather, it must have perceived that the dungeonās original owner had returned.
> Beep. Mana signature mismatch. Intruder elimination sequence initiated.
It identified me as an intruder through my Mana Power signature.
āDamn it.ā
Talk about bad luck. This was some next-level misfortune.
Then Liam shouted,
āHey, apprentice! Didnāt you say you controlled a golem once?ā
I had.
But that was only possible because the golem back then had an internal core.
This one didnāt.
Insteadāhow should I put it?āthere were countless threads of mana attached to it, guiding its movementsā¦
Right. Countless.
āA small-scale spatial magic wonāt block that.ā
And even if I blocked it momentarily, what good would it do?
I couldnāt restrain it either.
Boom! Boom!
The golem got closer and closer.
Countless simulations ran through my head.
āWhat if I detonate Adelineās magic like an EMP?ā
Everyone here would get caught in the blast.
āDamn it, if only I could change the type of stocked spellā¦ā
Hmm? Wait. Isnāt that actually possible?
I brought up the code of the magic stored in my staff.
> [Explosion]
> A magic purely focused on ādetonationāāthe high firepower youād expect from the Red Magic Tower.
> Naturally, it consumed a ridiculous amount of mana.
> The only reason I could use this spell even once was because Adeline had pre-assigned the Mana Power for it.
But what if I could tweak the stored spellās code and turn it into something entirely different?
āIf I could maintain the same power and range, but just reduce its lethality!ā
I tried editing the code, like I always do.
Butā
āDamn it.ā
It didnāt work.
The code wouldnāt change at all.
āSo once a spell is stocked, the code canāt be altered?ā
That tiny sliver of hope⦠began to crumble.
āInux-nim!ā
It was Ronās urgent voice.
āHuh?ā
Only then did I notice the shadow looming over meāand threw myself to the side.
CRASH!!!
The ground shook from the golemās strike landing just behind me.
āGuh!ā
My staff flew out of my hand.
Clatter.
It hit the ground and rolled away.
In the process, a spark of mana crackled from the impact.
āDamn it, donāt tell me it broke?ā
I hurried toward the staff to pick it upābut then felt a sense of dissonance.
āBroke?ā
Sure, the staff is a type of hardware, so it could break.
Just like the golem in the coliseum.
Which meant one thing:
āI can hack it!ā
Even if I canāt hack that golem,
I can hack this staff!
If I hack it, I might be able to lift the restriction that prevents modifying stocked spells!
āRon! Liam!ā
I called out to the two who could still act right now.
āThereās a way?ā
āThere is!ā
āThen hurryā¦!ā
āJust buy me a moment of aggro!ā
āWhat?ā
Liam hesitated, glancing at the massive golem.
Ron, on the other hand, bolted forward the moment he heard my plea.
Clang!
He banged his shield against the golemās leg, and the golem turned toward him.
Just as I thoughtāthis golemās algorithm wasnāt all that different.
Maybe just a bit more sophisticated.
āIt prioritizes the one who attacked it.ā
Thanks to that, the aggro shifted to Ron.
But he was too slow to hold out on his own.
āSir Liam!ā
I called out to Liam, who couldnāt bring himself to move.
āLet me go! Iāll do it!ā
It was Ethan.
Noāmore precisely, the mage controlling him.
Obviously, I couldnāt trust him.
āLiam! Itās a trap! That guy doesnāt care if Ethanās body lives or dies!ā
āTch, Iām just curious what madness youāll pull this time! Pure goodwill, I swear!ā
Thenā
āShut it! If it werenāt for this damn stabbed shoulder, I wouldnāt be hesitating!ā
Liam snapped at Ethan and then turned to me.
āAre you sure?ā
Even I didnāt know yet.
I couldnāt guarantee a 100% success.
āI have to tear apart the staffās code firstā¦ā
āI donāt careājust do it! You better make it work!ā
Liam charged at the golem.
āDamn it! If you fail, Iāll kill you myself!ā
He and Ron took positions at the front and back of the golem, drawing its aggro in proper rotation.
It was stable.
They wouldnāt be able to defeat the golem,
but they could probably buy enough time until their stamina ran out.
āThen nowā¦ā
It was all up to me.
āI have to hack the staffāfast!ā
ā
Meanwhile, Liam was thinking:
āDamn it. How did things end up like this?ā
When he first received this mission, he thought it would be easy.
Even when the tank kept making ominous remarks, it was just annoying.
Even when the apprentice mage suddenly joined the team,
he just figured heād complain to the guild about the extra baggage when he got back.
But then⦠a Shadow Lizard showed up in a D-grade dungeon.
The Red Saint went berserk out of nowhere.
And everything spiraled out of control from there.
Now here he was, drawing aggro from a golem while putting his life in the hands of an apprentice mage.
āWorst day of my life.ā
When he got back, he was going to drink himself stupid and party with women.
āBut⦠why does my body feel so heavy?ā
Thereās no way my stamina should be dropping this fast.
For some reason, his body was starting to feel unbearably heavy.
On top of that, the shoulder stabbed by Ethanās dagger had a strange burning sensation.
āWait a second.ā
