“How did it go?”

“If you’re referring to your sister’s cure… Ahem!”

Adelon cleared his throat, adjusting his tone.

Judging by his look, it seemed he was about to give me another long-winded explanation like last time—

“After giving much thought to the directive you gave me, Lord Adrian, I pondered what would be the most efficient way to resolve the matter—”

“Just the result.”

“…It was completed three days ago.”

Adelon answered with a crestfallen look.

He resembled a scolded weasel for a moment—but only for a moment.

“But this humble one hired a truly outstanding alchemist, one so skilled it’s baffling!”

Now he looked like a weasel fishing for praise, eyes gleaming with pride.

“This one is a super-genius mage who’s been shaking the magical academia with every new paper and theory they publish!”

Well, with that kind of confidence, the alchemist must be competent.

“Good work.”

“Oh, not at all! It’s nothing compared to what you’ve done for me, Lord Adrian!”

“Still, it couldn’t have been easy finding the right person.”

“Please! This was for your sister, no less! Of course I went all out!”

Adelon wiggled his weasel-like eyebrows enthusiastically.

Maybe it was part of his [Insight] skill—he was quite the smooth talker.

“More than anything, Sir Kai was a tremendous help.”

“The golden leech?”

“Pardon…? Golden leech?”

Adelon tilted his head in confusion.

I waved it off, and he quickly resumed.

“Sir Kai took care of the dung flies who gathered at the scent of money.”

Well, considering we were dealing with a transaction worth a million gold, there was bound to be no shortage of greedy pests.

“It’s thanks to Sir Kai that we were able to safely place a request with the Langrid Magic Tower.”

That was the whole reason I brought Kai along to begin with—

“So it was more troublesome than expected.”

“That’s putting it lightly. If it weren’t for Sir Kai… truly, he’s an incredible man!”

Adelon’s voice grew passionate as he spoke.

I didn’t know the details, but it seemed Kai had done his part well.

“So, where’s the completed medicine?”

“Oh! I got word it’s on the way—it should arrive shortly!”

That settled it. The cure was taken care of.

“And the mage I told you to contact?”

“You mean the mage named Iliana, right?”

Adelon cleared his throat again.

“Well! I put my wits to good use and figured out the quickest and most effective way to approach her—”

“Just the result.”

“…Unfortunately, I was unable to make contact.”

Adelon’s face fell again.

What is it with this guy?

Anyway—

It wasn’t that he didn’t reach out.

It was that he couldn’t.

“And why’s that?”

“Miss Iliana turned out to be an Apprentice Mage at the Langrid Magic Tower.”

“So?”

“Well, the tower has a strict rule: Apprentice Mages are prohibited from interacting with outsiders unless granted explicit permission by their supervising Chair Mage.”

So it was a system meant to protect apprentices from external interference.

Not that I couldn’t understand it, but it was an unexpected roadblock.

“And that Chair Mage didn’t give permission?”

“Did you try contacting the Chair Mage?”

“Of course I did!”

Adelon shouted as if the question was insulting.

But he quickly slumped his shoulders.

“That chair mage is just… so uptight. He completely slammed the door in my face.”

…Then we had no options.

The Langrid Magic Tower was the homeland of all mages across the continent.

It held immeasurable sway throughout the entire magical world.

Even being an executive of a merchant guild meant nothing compared to a Chair Mage of Langrid.

Even I, as the heir to a count’s house, held no leverage over him.

Even a count proper would have to tread carefully.

Which meant—at present, there was no way to meet Iliana.

‘Well, it’s not like I need to meet her right now.’

The priority was still expanding the allied forces and strengthening my own power.

But eventually, we would have to meet.

Especially considering the implications of her understanding of Infinite [M].

‘Maybe I’ll just have to spend more.’

Thankfully, I had 90 million gold stored away in my inventory.

If I poured in enough capital, I could probably buy my way past Iliana’s Chair Mage—

‘But the expenses are growing faster than expected…’

As I was mulling it over—

“Seriously, that little punk’s shaking up the entire magical world with their ridiculous theories, and yet they have no manners… Ugh!”

“…Hmm?”

“But still! This humble one has been racking his brains to fulfill Lord Adrian’s orders!”

“Wait. The super-genius mage you mentioned… is that the same alchemist you hired?”

“That’s right! I figured, if the guy’s that skilled, I could use the alchemy request as an excuse to get close to Iliana!”

Adelon’s words weren’t even finished yet when—

Ding—

The shop’s door opened, and someone stepped inside.

“Um… I’m here about the alchemy commission…”

It was a woman’s voice.

And based on what she said, it was obvious—she was the alchemist hired through the Langrid Magic Tower.

My gaze naturally followed her voice—

A robe of blue and silver in perfect harmony.

Eyes the color of sapphire.

Hair like the pale sky, as if it held the heavens themselves.

A slender nose, thin lips.

Delicate features and translucent skin that looked like it had been carved by an artist.

And the moment I laid eyes on her—

My eyes widened in shock.

Because I knew who she was.

The woman now standing at the shop’s entrance was—

“Commander Iliana…?”

Iliana Segretus.

The very person we had just been discussing.

A hero of the allied forces—

The final mage of the continent—

“Eh…?”

And the one praised as the greatest mage in all of continental history—

The Archmage of the Alliance.
