0.0000001% Demon King - 0DK Chapter 39: Crossroads (1) (Part 2)
The Holy Land was deeply situated within human territories, fortified with checkpoints and devices to detect demonic energy. Even with extreme caution, it was impossible for a Demon King to hide such immense demonic energy and infiltrate.
At that moment, the Pope remembered one crucial detail.
“An artifact that hides demonic energy… damn it!”
The Pope gritted his teeth. He had known about it but had dismissed it from his mind.
It wasn’t due to his incompetence or foolishness. It was a natural assumption. This was a divine realm. Even if a Demon King entered, escaping was nearly impossible—it was akin to a suicide mission.
But the Demon King had entered. The priest urgently whispered to the Pope,
“Pope, it’s just one Demon King. It shouldn’t be a problem. Unless it’s a sovereign, they can’t defeat the paladin order…”
“The very fact that the Demon King has invaded is the problem!”
The Pope shouted, causing the priest to fall back in shock. He ground his teeth.
“Damn it! Why now of all times!”
All the influential figures from various countries were present. Any trouble would tarnish the authority of the Sun God.
‘Especially with the Imperial Prince here!’
The Prince, no longer with a bored face, watched the commotion with interest. The Pope made a decision.
“…Proceed.”
“What, what?”
“Start the execution! Execute the Demon King and the traitors!”
“Perhaps you should evacuate…”
The Pope shook his head.
“No. Proceed first.”
“But…”
“What do you think the Demon King came here for?”
“Ah.”
The priest’s expression changed.
“He came to rescue his kin. Then we’ll just proceed. If his kin dies, he’ll probably leave.”
This was actually an opportunity. The Church of the Sun God not bowing to a Demon King and driving him away would spread far and wide. The Pope slammed his chair and raised his voice.
“We do not bow to threats! Return the Demon King and his traitors to the embrace of the god!”
“As the Sun God wills!”
The executioner, with a loud shout, lit the torch. He approached the mercenaries first. The wood caught fire, and the crosses began to burn.
“Aaaaah!”
“Sa, save us!”
As screams echoed, Sinclair’s face hardened. Instinctively, she leaped forward.
“Hero?”
The fierce wind extinguished the flames. Sinclair stood in front of the mercenaries, brandishing her sword at the executioner.
“Hero?”
“Hero! What are you doing!”
Sinclair was confused herself, having moved reflexively. But as if resolved, she looked up at the Pope with steely eyes.
“Pope. These are civilians.”
“What nonsense are you spouting…”
“They are not our enemies.”
“…Hero!”
The Pope stood up, unable to contain his anger.
“They are enemies! The minions of the Demon King, traitors of humanity! Do you not believe my words?”
Spitting as he shouted, Sinclair sheathed her sword silently. Convinced that she understood his words, the Pope spoke calmly again.
“Hero. I do not lie…”
“I have seen it for myself.”
“…What?”
“Pope. I visited their hometowns. I saw their lands, their families, their lives, with my own eyes.”
The Pope fumbled with his words. Sinclair grasped her sword with both hands.
“These are beings that should be protected under the laws of the Sun God. That is my will.”
“Hero! Are you siding with evil? Are you forsaking order, justice!”
“Are you the one to say that?”
The Hero smirked.
“I have seen the truth of the Church, Pope.”
Sinclair’s smile twisted.
“The truth you have been hiding.”
With her quiet response, the Pope realized why she opposed them and that it was too late to turn back.
“Damn!”
He had made a mistake. Knowing something was off with the Hero and not acting on it. He had always assumed she would remain the obedient child who listened to his words, but the Hero had witnessed the truth. The Pope bit his dry lips.
“What’s this?”
The Prince, having watched the whole commotion, grinned.
“It was getting boring, but now it’s suddenly interesting, isn’t it?”
“I follow only your will, Prince.”
“Then keep watching. That’s my will.”
“Your will shall be done.”
Prompted by the Prince’s voice, the Pope snapped back to reality.
Whatever happened, he couldn’t afford to show more disgrace in front of the Prince. The Pope sternly spoke.
“Hero. Whatever you saw, I am the Pope. The representative of the Sun God. You know what that means.”
“I am well aware.”
The Pope, as God’s representative, standing in his way was equivalent to obstructing the will of God.
“Sinclair Sekriade. Hero of the Sun God. As God’s representative, I command.”
“If you believe in the Sun God, you cannot refuse the Pope’s order.” The Pope solemnly spoke.
“Kill the Demon King and his traitors.”
“Is this the will of the Sun God?”
Sinclair murmured softly. She looked at Karos silently.
Karos spoke with subdued eyes.
“It’s your choice. All of it.”
At that moment, Sinclair made her decision.
“O great Sun God. If everything I have seen, all that is truly your will…”
To manipulate people, violate laws, spout lies, and implant false zealotry among people—if all of that is indeed the will of God.
Sinclair spoke calmly.
“I will deny you.”
As her declaration ended, light pierced the earth.
