A Frontline Soldier Awakened as a Gamer In The War! - FSAGW Chapter 58 (Part 1)
Thud-
“Kieeek…!”
The last orc warrior who managed to hold on finally knelt on the ground with his throat slit.
Kaiyan wiped off the green blood on his sword and sheathed it before turning around. Banson, Bisel, and all the mercenaries were staring at him with astonished eyes.
“Why are you all looking like that?”
“Well, it’s even more brutal when seen in person. I noticed it when you were capturing thieves alone, but…”
“Who would have thought these orcs would be so weak?”
“Well… I did kill them ruthlessly.”
Lost in thoughts about the person who killed Smith, Kaiyan unintentionally exerted a lot of force in his grip.
In front of these people who considered him a Rank B mercenary, he should have shown only enough strength that didn’t seem too unnatural.
Bisel approached with wide-eyed astonishment.
“Why on earth are you labeled as a Rank B mercenary, Kaiyan? In my opinion, you seem to be at least Rank A.”
“Really? You think so?”
“No, really! I’ve seen several Rank B mercenaries, and you’re above that level.”
“Well…”
Kaiyan pondered on what to say in response when Banson placed his hand on Bisel’s shoulder and spoke up.
“Forget about Bisel? Rule number two.”
Mercenary Code, Rule Number Two.
Do not inquire about the past until the other person brings it up.
“Ah, I know. It’s just that I was so surprised.”
“Now that you remember, let’s focus on sorting things out. Don’t bother only the hardworking Kaiyan.”
Banson took Bisel away, giving me a playful wink with one eye.
“He’s truly… an amusing person.”
Under Banson’s lead, the mercenaries quickly gathered the orc corpses in one place. Unless it was an urgent matter, leaving monster corpses as they were would create a foul odor for a long time, so it was a general rule to burn them. Of course, in the forest, leaving them be was an exception as the fire could spread to the trees.
Whoosh.
“Ugh… the disgusting smell. Orcs seem to have a stronger odor than other creatures. Or is it just me?”
“No, I agree. …What do these guys eat to have such a stench?”
The orc corpses piled up in one place burned fiercely, spreading a foul stench mixed with the unique odor of orcs and the pungent smell of monsters.
“Let’s go now. This should be enough.”
“Yeah, let’s go quickly! We don’t have much distance left to our destination.”
The mercenaries resumed their halted carriage, which rattled along as it traversed the Louis Plains.
“Only two days left.”
There were two days remaining until the contract period expired.
After that time, one of the perplexing issues in my mind, the enigmatic Jansen and his secretive agenda, would come to light.
**** ****
It was the third day since entering the Louis Plains.
Jansen still showed no intention of getting out of the carriage and wanted to head northwest.
Sensing something strange, the mercenaries gathered in one place.
“If we continue like this, we might just barely enter the border between Gami-an and Louis Plains, don’t you think?”
“Hmm… Gamian… It seems to be getting too dangerous.”
The mercenaries fell silent at Bisel’s words.
Indeed, the level of danger varied significantly depending on whether the destination was the Louis Plains or the Gamian Great Plains.
Katina, who had been quietly listening, raised her hand.
“But if Therian merchant goes as far as Gami-an, do we have an obligation to fulfill the contract? We didn’t know we were going to Gamian.”
“That’s true…”
While it was true that the explanation during the contract didn’t mention Gami-an as the destination, it simply stated that we needed to travel northwest for seven days.
Banson, the leader of the mercenary group, finally broke his silence and spoke.
“That’s quite ambiguous. Although it wasn’t explicitly stated that we’re going to Gami-an, it wasn’t denied either.”
“Well… Then what should we do, Banson? Going all the way to Gami-an isn’t an option, right?”
“Let’s observe for now. We can’t immediately cancel the contract. Besides, we don’t even know for sure if the destination is Gami-an.”
“Then, at least, how about asking Jansen directly? If we get a definite answer that Gamian isn’t the destination, that would be enough.”
“It’s a good suggestion… But will Jansen, who has been silent about the destination for six days, willingly reveal it when asked by the mercenaries?”
Acknowledging the mercenaries’ opinions, Banson made a decision. If Jansen truly intended to go to Gami-an, they would terminate the contract.
“It’s settled then. Everyone stay here. I’ll go alone.”
Leaving behind the mercenaries who wanted to accompany him, Banson approached the carriage where Jansen was seated and knocked on the door.
“Activate Aura.”
Kaiyan quickly activated Aura to eavesdrop on their conversation. This wasn’t the intended use for Aura, but he had no choice.
“Mr. Jansen, may I have a moment to talk?” Banson asked.
“Yes, Mr. Banson, what’s the matter?” Jansen replied.
“It’s about… It’s about time you told us the destination.”
Jansen seemed hesitant to answer, and Kaiyan could sense his discomfort from inside the carriage.
“I’m sorry, but I can’t disclose that yet. It’s a highly important secret of our superiors… I hope you understand,” Jansen explained.
As Kaiyan expected, Jansen wouldn’t willingly reveal the information now.
Banson clenched his lips tightly, showing determination not to back down. “Then please confirm this. Is the Therian merchant’s destination Gami-an?”
There was silence from the carriage, and no answer came.
“Mr. Jansen?” Banson called again, but there was still no response.
“Oh, I apologize for that. Please don’t worry. We’ll reach the destination today,” Jansen finally replied.
“Today?” Banson questioned.
“Yes, please understand that I can’t provide any further details,” Jansen said.
“Today… Understood,” Banson acknowledged, satisfied with the answer.
Kaiyan felt a sense of unease watching Banson’s reaction.
“If they reach the destination today…”
If Jansen’s words were true, then the destination was in the Louis Plains. However, it would be impossible to reach Gami-an today.
Kaiyan wondered why the contract was for seven days if it only took six days. Was it for contingency?
There was something else strange. Even though Jansen surely knew why the mercenaries were unsettled, he didn’t provide any explanation until Banson asked. Why now?
“What kind of strange situation is he trying to create?”
Kaiyan couldn’t help but feel unlucky. It was the first and possibly the last contract, and it had turned out like this.
The mercenaries, reassured after hearing Banson’s relayed message from Jansen, continued the carriage journey. If Jansen’s words during the day were true, it meant the contract would soon be over.
The carriage raced through the center of the Louis Plains toward the border, and with the mercenaries occasionally encountering small monsters, they easily dealt with them, making it seem like the mission was coming to a close without any major issues.
