Harry Potter and the Secret Treasures - H.P.S.T Chapter 1360: Evan's Opinion
Before Hermione could finish, Harry and Ron simultaneously shouted at her to stop.
“It was a laugh!” said Ron, upending a ketchup bottle over his sausages. The sauce thickly covered the surface of the sausages and dripped into the plate. “Just a laugh, Hermione, that’s all! I think this spell is great. I learned it from Harry and I’m going to give it a try…”
“Planning to try it on someone? Are you mad, Ron?! Dangling people upside down by the ankle?” said Hermione. “Who puts their time and energy into making up spells like that?”
“Fred and George,” said Ron, shrugging, “it’s their kind of thing. And, er —”
“My dad,” said Harry. He had only just remembered.
“What?”
“My dad used this spell,” said Harry. “I — Sirius told me.”
The last part was not true; in fact, Harry had seen his father use the spell on Snape in Snape’s memory. Apart from telling Sirius, he had never told anyone else about that particular excursion into the Pensieve, and Sirius hadn’t thought there was anything wrong with his father’s behavior toward Snape.
What his father had done — using that spell on Snape — had left Harry conflicted and upset for a long time.
Now, however, a wonderful possibility occurred to him. Could the Half-Blood Prince possibly be — ?
“Can someone explain what spell you’re all talking about?” Evan asked, sitting down next to Hermione. He helped himself to some bread, fried eggs, vegetables, and sausages, and glanced up to see the groggy Elaine yawning as she walked into the Great Hall. She pulled her breakfast out of her pocket as she sat down.
“It’s a spell from the Prince’s book,” Harry explained. “The incantation is Levicorpus.”
“Levicorpus…” said Evan, realization dawning. “So it’s that spell.”
“The effect is to dangle people in the air, making them float along, asleep, helpless. Such a dangerous spell, and the two of them actually think it’s fun,” said Hermione irritably.
“It’s not dangerous at all, Hermione!” Ron repeated, stabbing a sausage with his fork and biting into it fiercely. With his mouth full, he added, “You just heard Harry — his dad used it.”
“But Harry’s dad wasn’t the only one who ever used it. Recently, we’ve seen in the papers that Death Eaters or extremist pure-blood wizards have been using that spell on Muggles. They think it’s funny, too.”
Since Voldemort’s return, such incidents had become more and more common.
Many wizards believed that they were superior to Muggles and expressed their beliefs through this form of abuse.
They were not Death Eaters, but they certainly supported Voldemort’s theory.
Harry’s heart skipped a beat. He had no way to refute Hermione, but Ron came to his aid.
“That was different. They were abusing it. Harry and his dad were just having a laugh,” he said robustly, pointing a sausage sternly at Hermione. “We all know what’s going on, Hermione. You don’t like the Prince because he’s better than you at Potions …”
“It’s got nothing to do with that!” said Hermione, her cheeks reddening. “Evan is better at Potions than me, but I don’t dislike him. Listen, I just think it’s very irresponsible to start performing spells when you don’t even know what they’re for, and stop talking about ‘the Prince’ as if it’s his title, I bet it’s just a stupid nickname, and it doesn’t seem as though he was a very nice person to me!”
Snape was actually quite serious, but this nickname… was indeed a bit childish.
Everyone goes through that phase of life, carrying a bit of embarrassing history they’d rather not revisit.
Evan agreed with Hermione’s statement. It was indeed irresponsible to use magic on a companion without knowing its function and effect. Moreover, not all the magic created and improved by Snape himself was safe. He stood on Hermione’s side in this matter, but Hermione’s words made Harry very emotional. He disagreed with Hermione’s statement and seemed to fully believe in what the “Prince” left behind.
“I don’t see where you get that from, Hermione!” said Harry heatedly. “If he’d been a budding Death Eater he wouldn’t have been boasting about being ‘half-blood,’ would he?”
Even as he said it, Harry remembered that his father had been pure-blood, but he pushed the thought out of his mind; he would worry about that later. …
“The Death Eaters can’t all be pure-blood, there aren’t enough pure-blood wizards left. True pure-bloods have mostly died out!” said Hermione stubbornly. “I expect most of them are half-bloods pretending to be pure. It’s only Muggle-borns they hate, like Evan and I, whose parents are both Muggles. I bet they’d be quite happy to let you and Ron join up.”
“There is no way they’d let me be a Death Eater!” said Ron indignantly, brandishing his fork at Hermione. “My whole family are blood traitors! That’s as bad as Muggle-borns to Death Eaters!”
Ron used too much force, the sauce splattered, and Hermione quickly dodged backwards.
Suddenly, all the empty plates on the dining table floated up and lined up in front of Evan and Hermione, blocking the flying ketchup.
“That’s impressive! How did you do that?” Everyone stopped arguing, now staring at Evan in surprise.
“Nonverbal spell plus Levitation Charm,” said Evan calmly, as the plates gently returned to the table .
“But I didn’t see you take out your wand.”
“Using magic doesn’t always require a wand. Wandless casting and certain techniques can achieve the same effect,” Evan explained. “It takes a lot of magic power and control, though. If you’re interested, I can teach you how to do it.”
Ever since he went back a thousand years ago, where he had inexplicably absorbed a significant amount of magic power from that peculiar Cardinal, Evan could now use minor spells like this effortlessly, without any pressure and without the need for a wand.
In fact, wizards were inherently capable of casting magic using any tool — or even just their bare hands.
It was just that most wizards were used to using wands, and it was difficult for them to cast spells without a wand.
The sudden turn of events brought Hermione, Harry, and Ron’s argument to a halt, redirecting everyone’s attention. Taking advantage of the moment, Evan shared his thoughts on the spells Snape had left behind…
