Harry Potter and the Secret Treasures - H.P.S.T Chapter 1412: Apparition Lessons
On the last day of the holidays, students returned to Hogwarts one after another, and the castle became lively again.
Although the current situation was worrying, this time, the Christmas holidays ended without incident and every student returned on time.
The brief separation made everyone feel a sense of warmth when they saw each other again.
In the common room, Neville, Colin and everyone talked about the interesting things that happened during their holidays.
Soon, Ginny went to find Dean, and Harry watched her eagerly until they left the common room. Later, amid a burst of laughter from the girls, Lavender rushed out from nowhere and threw herself into Ron’s arms, and the two of them were locked in a kind of vertical wrestling match.
Playing vertical wrestling in front of the entire House, was this still considered a slow pace of progress?!
Evan was nearby and heard Lavender excitedly talking about the Christmas gift she had given to Ron…
The next morning, he saw Ron secretly putting on the thick gold chain.
What a classic case of saying one thing and doing another — so hypocritical!
If Ron and Lavender’s “progress” was considered slow, then Evan, who visited Hermione and Elaine every night only to donate blood, must have been progressing at a snail’s pace!
Aside from that, the new term started next morning with a pleasant surprise for the sixth years: at noon the next day, a large sign was pinned to the common room notice boards.
APPARITION LESSONS
If you are seventeen years of age, or will turn seventeen on or before the 31st August next, you are eligible for a twelve-week course of Apparition Lessons from a Ministry of Magic Apparition instructor. Please sign below if you would like to participate. Cost: 12 Galleons.
There was no need for Evan to learn, and Harry, Hermione and Ron signed the notice without hesitation.
Apparition was a very practical magic. However, due to its high risk, it needed to be assessed by the Ministry of Magic before it could be used. Not all wizards could pass the test and get permission. For example, Ron said that his brother Charlie had not passed the test.
“Charlie’s too big. This kind of magic is tough for him,” Ron held his arms out from his body as though he was a gorilla. “I’d better pass my test first time. Fred and George did. Otherwise…”
He paused as Lavender crept up behind him, slipped her hands over his eyes, and trilled, “Guess who, Won-Won?”
Evan, Harry, and Hermione looked at each other, quickened their pace and left the common room for their afternoon classes.
The topic still stayed on Apparition, and Hermione looked a little worried because of what Ron said.
“Is this magic really that difficult?” she asked.
Hermione had witnessed the entire process of Evan’s learning, read many books on the subject, and even experienced it firsthand when Evan took her along a few times. It was not a pleasant feeling.
For this reason, she was a little anxious.
After all, every book described Apparition as an extremely advanced form of magic, and now they had a real example — Charlie — who had failed the test…
“It does have some difficulty,” said Evan honestly. “I think if you concentrate and use it cautiously, it’s not too hard. The real challenge is being able to Apparate freely, anytime and anywhere. That requires a lot of practice. When I saw Dumbledore and Voldemort duel, their mastery of Apparition was incredible. It greatly enhanced their ability to dodge and improved their dueling skills. But don’t worry, I’ll help you practice.”
He didn’t say the latter half of his thoughts. One of the main ways to assist with Apparition was handling Splinching. If someone left a part of their body behind, an assistant could quickly retrieve it and restore them. But that was a bit too gruesome to mention now and easy to discourage enthusiasm, so it was better left unsaid for the moment.
“By the way, when can we take the actual test?” Harry asked, a little excited.
“Soon as we’re seventeen,” said Hermione, “so I can take the test now, but I’ll definitely need some time to practice first.”
“Oh, then how are we supposed to practice? You wouldn’t be able to Apparate in here, not in the castle…”
“Dumbledore will lift restrictions in some areas by then,” said Evan.
At this time, Ron caught up with them, panting, his ears bright red and his expression disgruntled.
“She wants me to keep it out all the time,” Ron explained. “That’s absolutely crazy.”
“What are you talking about?” Hermione asked.
“Nothing,” Ron just remembered that Hermione didn’t know about the Christmas gift Lavender had given him, and hurriedly changed the subject, “So — Apparition. We’ve been Side-Along Apparated by Evan before, and that was awful, wasn’t it? I wonder if it’s better when you do it yourself, I think…”
It was clear that Harry, Hermione and Ron were all very interested in Apparition.
In fact, they were not the only students excited about learning this magic.
All day long, there was much talk about the forthcoming lessons; a great deal of store was set by being able to vanish and reappear at will.
“How cool will it be when we can just —” Seamus clicked his fingers to indicate disappearance. “Me cousin Fergus does it just to annoy me, you wait till I can do it back … He’ll never have another peaceful moment. …”
Lost in visions of this happy prospect, he flicked his wand a little too enthusiastically, so that instead of producing the fountain of pure water that was the object of today’s Charms lesson, he let out a hoselike jet that ricocheted off the ceiling and knocked Professor Flitwick flat on his face.
Professor Flitwick dried himself off with a wave of his wand and set Seamus lines: “I am a wizard, not a baboon brandishing a stick.”
Every sixth year was talking about Apparition, and students from Wizarding families were bragging about their experiences of being Apparated by their parents or Wizarding relatives with their entourage. Those students who had never Apparated were very interested in this and listened patiently to them talk about the sensation of Apparition.
All of them seemed awed, rather than put off, when they heard how uncomfortable Apparition was, and continued to ask for more details.
The atmosphere now was much like the first time first-years learned to fly broomsticks every year.
Back then, flying lessons and broomsticks were the hottest topics in the school. Students from Wizarding families would brag about their flying experiences as if they had spent their entire childhoods soaring on broomsticks. Now, it seemed like their childhoods had been filled with nothing but Apparition…
Sure enough, over the next few days, Apparition became the hottest topic in the school.
Almost everyone was talking about it, sixth years or not.
Among the people around Evan, only Elaine showed no interest.
Vampires had their own version of Apparition-like magic, which wasn’t monitored by the Ministry of Magic and had no age restrictions.
Evan had seen Caresius use this magic before, and Elaine could do it too.
In other words, she could Apparate, but she said she’d never used it because she couldn’t tell directions…
