Harry was pulled to his feet. It was his godfather, Sirius Black!

He was covered in dust, his left arm was bleeding, and the battle was extremely fierce.

“Harry, what’s going on?” Sirius asked.

As he spoke, he pulled Harry back and seized the chance to cast a spell at an enormous, blond Death Eater across from them.

“Sirius, it’s Snape. He … he killed Professor Dumbledore,” said Harry with difficulty, his eyes stinging.

Another blast tore through the air, and he and Sirius were separated.

He was not sure if Sirius had heard him clearly. Sirius was once again locked in battle with that Death Eater, and Harry had no time to explain. He put his head down and sprinted forward, narrowly avoiding a blast that erupted over his head, showering them all in bits of wall.

Snape must not escape, he must catch up with Snape —

Harry chased hard, and he heard Professor McGonagall shouting to him, “That way!” He glimpsed the female Death Eater, Alecto, sprinting away down the left corridor with her arms over her head.

He didn’t see Snape and Malfoy, but they must be ahead of that woman.

Harry launched himself after them but his foot caught on something, and next moment he was lying across someone’s legs. Looking around, he saw Ron, flat against the floor, bleeding.

“Ron, you …”

“M’all right,” muttered Ron. “Harry, what’s wrong with you? Where’s Professor Dumbledore? The Death Eaters — they’re everywhere in the castle. Hermione even saw a werewolf on the Marauder’s Map heading toward Gryff —”

“Tell me, have you seen Snape and Malfoy?” Harry interrupted him.

“They ran that way!” Ron pointed in a direction. “Malfoy let the Death Eaters in. Why is Snape running with him? And where’s Evan —”

Harry didn’t hear the rest. He scrambled up from the floor and began to sprint along the corridor, ignoring the bangs issuing from behind him, the yells of the others to come back, and the mute call of the figures on the ground whose fate he did not yet know. …

The battle was nearing its end, and more and more Death Eaters were trying to flee.

But these people were not important. What was important was to catch Snape!

Harry skidded around the corner, his trainers slippery with blood; Snape had an immense head start. Was it possible that he had already entered the cabinet in the Room of Requirement, or had the Order made steps to secure it, to prevent the Death Eaters retreating that way?

He could hear nothing but his own pounding feet, his own hammering heart as he sprinted along the next empty corridor, but then spotted a bloody footprint that showed at least one of the fleeing Death Eaters was heading toward the front doors — perhaps the Room of Requirement was indeed blocked —

He skidded around another corner and a curse flew past him; he dived behind a suit of armor that exploded.

Then, he suddenly saw the female Death Eater Alecto and another very fat Death Eater running down the marble staircase. He quickly aimed jinxes at them, but merely hit several bewigged witches in a portrait on the landing, who ran screeching into neighboring paintings.

As he leapt the wreckage of armor, Harry heard more shouts and screams; other people within the castle seemed to have awoken. …

There was only the front door. Snape could only go through the front door to take Malfoy out of Hogwarts!

Realizing this, Harry pelted toward a shortcut, hoping to close in on Snape and Malfoy, who must surely have reached the grounds by now.

Remembering to leap the vanishing step halfway down the concealed staircase, he burst through a tapestry at the bottom and out into a corridor where a number of bewildered and pajama-clad Hufflepuffs stood, all members of the D.A.

“Harry! How is the fight going up there?” Ernie Macmillan asked. “We have orders to stay here. The fighting up there…”

“Out of the way!” yelled Harry, knocking two boys aside as he sprinted toward the landing and down the remainder of the marble staircase. The oak front doors had been blasted open, there were smears of blood on the flagstones, and several terrified students stood huddled against the walls, one or two still cowering with their arms over their faces. Not far away stood a group of Slytherin students who had just come up from the dungeons.

They looked panicked too, but they all looked at Harry coldly.

Nearby, the giant Gryffindor hourglass had been hit by a curse, and the rubies within were still falling, with a loud rattle, onto the flagstones below. …

Through the entrance hall, he could vaguely see the vast outline of Hagrid outside. He was fighting with three Death Eaters. He kept shouting, and the opponents aiming curse after curse at him, but Hagrid’s immense strength and the toughened skin he had inherited from his giantess mother seemed to be protecting him.

“Well done, Hagrid!”

Harry soon knew why those Slytherin students were so indifferent. They seemed to have figured out what happened in the castle tonight.

He flew across the entrance hall and out into the dark grounds.

Harry could just make out two figures racing across the lawn. They were Snape and Malfoy. The two of them didn’t care about the battle behind them at all, and they were determined to flee.

Once they were beyond the school gates, they could Disapparate. …

Harry was about to catch up, but at this time, Hagrid shouted in pain.

His powerful body had kept him safe so far, but it also made it harder for him to dodge the curses flying at him.

Harry had to stop and help. He was afraid Hagrid might end up like Dumbledore. …

He wouldn’t make it. Snape and Malfoy would definitely use this moment to get away. Once they were beyond Hogwarts’ boundaries, they could Disapparate and vanish.

Suddenly, out of the night sky, a broomstick descended!

Evan had just recovered the Elder Wand and the Twin Serpent Staff left behind by Dumbledore. He set Hermione down and controlled his broom back into the air, spotting Snape and Malfoy fleeing toward the edge of the school grounds.

Near the castle gates, Harry and Hagrid were fighting three Death Eaters.

They quickly dealt with one, but Snape and Malfoy were already close to the wall.

They were about to succeed until Evan descended from above, appearing directly in front of them.

Snape and Malfoy came to an abrupt halt and exchanged a glance.

“Good evening, Professor! Good evening, Draco,” said Evan softly.

He held the Twin Serpent Staff horizontally across his chest, noting how both Snape and Malfoy were staring at it.

No one spoke, and the atmosphere was frozen to the extreme.

“Move aside, Mason,” said Snape slowly, raising his wand.

Evan stared at him, as though deep in thought.

Then, he looked at the panicked Malfoy beside him and nodded solemnly.

“Good luck, Professor!” said Evan, and his broom rose again as he flew back toward the castle.

Malfoy stared in disbelief as Evan simply flew away. Because of just one word from Snape, Evan had let them go. His sudden appearance had made Malfoy believe there was no way they could escape tonight — but now…

Everything that had happened tonight had nearly shattered Malfoy’s ability to think at all.
