- H.P.S.T Chapter 1621: Controlling the Dragon
Evan, Harry, Hermione, Elaine, and the old goblin quickly climbed the spiral staircase twisting upward through the tunnel, where the cart was parked.
A short distance away, on the outside of a raised platform, the dragon’s head could be seen. It looked particularly furious, its massive and dangerous head shaking dramatically.
The dragon roared, spewing flames.
Suddenly, the entire cavern began to tremble slightly, accompanied by a strange, echoing sound.
“What’s that sound?” Hermione stopped in her tracks.
“It’s the alarm! They’ve discovered us!” said Evan, his heart sinking.
The Lestrange family vault was heavily enchanted with protective spells. On the lower level of the tunnel, the ever-multiplying amount of gold, silver, and jewels was rapidly spreading outward from the vault. With something like that happening, it would have been truly bizarre if the Gringotts goblins hadn’t realized someone had broken in.
In a few minutes at most, there would be hundreds of goblins and fully armed wizards storming down after them.
“We have to get out of here quickly. There’s no time to get to Vault One.”
Indeed, thinking of the complex network of tracks leading to Vault One, Evan doubted they’d have any chance of getting back up if they went down there now.
Going to Vault One and not running away now would be unwise, even sheer madness.
They had already retrieved the Golden Cup, and the main goal of this trip to Gringotts had been achieved. There was no real need to risk going to Vault One. But even so, Evan couldn’t help feeling reluctant to leave. Breaking into Gringotts was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And even if they did decide to flee, the problem was — how?
If they tried to go back the way they came, they’d run straight into every defense the bank had, fully activated, and the goblin guards on top of that.
Going back like that would be courting death!
The tremors in the cavern grew stronger, and the agitated dragon began roaring again, breathing torrents of flame.
Then, an idea — wild or brilliant — flashed through Evan’s mind: he could control the dragon.
Yeah, control the dragon!
The Imperius Curse could control living things. While few wizards had successfully controlled a creature as powerful as a dragon, it was theoretically possible. Evan knew of wizards in China who could tame dragons.
They used trained dragons to guard Wizarding schools and other important locations, and had developed many unique and effective methods of control.
Evan had read about such methods before. For example, Chinese wizards would burn a certain type of tea powder to make dragons feel calm and content; or they would feed them chili peppers to invigorate their fire-breath; or even use whips to strike the dragon’s hide as a kind of massage, to “build rapport.”.
While Evan wasn’t familiar with those methods, he could still achieve direct control using the Imperius Curse.
His strength lay in his magical powers, far exceeding those of ordinary wizards, powerful enough to control a dragon’s.
With this in mind, he pointed his wand at the dragon and shouted, “Imperio!”
He poured immense magical force into the curse. A flash of green light shot from his wand and struck the dragon, but it bounced off immediately.
The dragon turned its massive head toward Evan, roaring angrily and spewing out a stream of flames.
A wave of scorching heat rolled toward them, and Evan and the others stumbled back in alarm.
A dragon’s hide possesses immensely strong magical resistance — it can repel nearly all known spells. The only vulnerable spot is its eyes.
“Evan, what are you doing? You’re using the Imperius Curse on a dragon?” Hermione gasped, staring at him in disbelief.
“I’m trying to control it.”
“You’re crazy!” Harry said in shock. “That’s never going to work!”
“The Imperius Curse can control a dragon. As long as the magic can penetrate its skin, it will work. Perhaps I should aim for its eyes; they’re its most obvious weakness.”
Evan waited until the flames died down a bit, then raised his wand and aimed it at the dragon’s eye, shouting again, “Imperio!”
The next second, the green spell struck the dragon’s misty gray eye.
This time, the spell didn’t deflect, seemingly nothing happened, but then a tingling sensation surged from Evan’s brain into his wand.
It worked! Evan had successfully cast the Imperius Curse on the dragon.
But unlike when he had controlled Bellatrix or the old goblin earlier, this time he felt a surge of wild, alien, violent thoughts flood into his mind. His head throbbed with searing pain; the shock was so intense that he could feel the veins in his temples pulsing.
The frantic thoughts that flooded Evan’s mind were fleeting, and Evan felt a tremendous pressure that nearly choked him.
But he had done it. He had successfully taken control of a dragon!
If any wizard were to hear of this, it would cause an uproar. The looks on Harry’s, Hermione’s, and Elaine’s faces said it all.
“How, Evan? It’s impossible. Dragons have such powerful magic that almost no spells can harm them,” said Hermione. “It’s written in the books that it takes dozens of wizards working together to harm a dragon. I’ve never heard of anyone using the Imperius Curse to control a dragon, not even —”
“I did it,” said Evan calmly.
“— not even in China, where there are legends about dragon tamers, that’s not — wait, you did it? You managed to control this dragon? Oh my god!” Hermione’s mouth fell open in shock.
Harry and Elaine stared at Evan in disbelief; they had never heard of such a thing.
“Yeah, I did it. Hurry up, get onto its back, and let’s get out of here,” said Evan.
He jumped down and climbed onto the dragon’s back by the crook of its hind legs.
The dragon didn’t resist. It either didn’t notice Evan, or it truly was under his control.
It wasn’t as violent as before, but controlling a dragon took its toll on Evan. He fought the pressure and urged the others to hurry up.
The scales on the dragon’s back were as hard as steel. Evan stretched out an arm; Hermione hoisted herself up.
Then he hauled Elaine aboard, and Harry climbed on behind them.
“Hold on tight!” Evan leaned forward, and his wand pointed at the thick cuffs chaining the beast to the floor, he yelled, “Relashio!”
The cuffs broke open with loud bangs, and the dragon was free!
With a roar, it reared, wings spread, and soared into the air.
Evan dug in his knees, clutching as tightly as he could to the jagged scales. The dragon roared as it soared into the air, its massive wings beating with a loud whooshing sound.
“Evan, where are we going?”
“Down below, to Vault One,” Evan shouted, still determined to find Salazar Slytherin’s vault.
He controlled the dragon to turn around while swinging his wand in wide arcs.
Rumble, rumble, amid the thunderous noise, Evan blasted open the tunnel.
The dragon also opened its mouth and spewed flames to help him, and the entire tunnel began to collapse.
