Draco Malfoy muttered a few words, but Harry hadn’t quite caught what he said before silence returned.

Harry grew impatient. He didn’t know what Malfoy was doing; perhaps he was preening in front of the mirror, casually fixing his platinum blonde hair, or perhaps he had already noticed him. At the thought, Harry shrank further against the wall, wishing he could make himself smaller or become invisible.

Hidden there, he felt weak, pitiful, and helpless. If Malfoy so much as turned his body a little to the side, he would see him behind the mirror.

What if he was discovered?

Facing the Malfoy family and the ever-present threat of Death Eaters, what were Harry’s chances?

Without a doubt, zero.

If he were caught, then Evan, Sirius, and the rest of the Order of the Phoenix wouldn’t be coming to Malfoy Manor to rescue Ron, but to rescue him! And if they did manage to find him, the Malfoys would summon Voldemort straightaway, and then…

Harry’s mind raced, conjuring one dreadful image after another — of himself in Voldemort’s hands, of the terrible trouble his reckless impulse would bring to Evan, Sirius, and the Order. But the worst didn’t happen. Malfoy didn’t seem to have noticed the figure crouched behind the mirror. Out in the room, Lucius and Narcissa had begun speaking again.

“I’m so worried. Things aren’t turning out the way we expected at all… Bella is different from us. There’s something in her nature — it’s been there since she was a child — that makes her too fervent, too fanatical. She can give herself to the Dark Lord without reservation, even her life, and she’d think it an honor to do so,” Narcissa said worriedly. “This failure has been devastating for her. I think she’s gone a bit irrational now!”

“After being locked up in Azkaban for so long, no one would be normal,” said Lucius, in his usual lazy tone. “Cissy, you don’t still think she’s reliable and trustworthy, do you? Look at the advice she’s been giving us, look at what she’s done since she got out, look at the trouble she’s brought upon the Malfoy family.”

“Ahh, Azkaban has made her irrational. She’s an incurable madwoman now, bringing us only danger and trouble,” said Narcissa. “I’m just worried that we might be dragged into the abyss. Promise me, Lucius, if anything happens, our first priority is Draco’s safety.”

“I promise,” said Malfoy quickly, “but don’t worry too much. Things may be getting out of hand, yes — but the Malfoys aren’t like those raving zealots. We’ve always had minds of our own. No matter how bad things get, as long as we keep our wits, we’ll be fine.”

Another moment of silence followed; Harry heard nothing more.

Setting aside the question of sides, the conversation outside was — in a strange way — rather touching.

Like any mother, Narcissa’s greatest concern was her son’s safety.

This reminded Harry of his mother, Lily. He’d always believed Death Eaters to be utterly heartless, that every one of them was steeped in evil.

Now it seemed that not all of them were like that.

Even Death Eaters had it tough these days. Facing a mad leader and a group of mad supporters, what was the point of having great power, high status, and a lot of money?! That was the truth now. Even Death Eaters like the Malfoys had begun to fear what Voldemort was doing.

“What exactly is the Dark Lord doing?” Draco Malfoy suddenly asked, his voice trembling. “His recent orders have been very strange, I’ve heard…”

“Draco!” Narcissa cut him off at once. She sounded flustered, panicked. “There are things we’re better off not getting involved in. The Dark Lord has his reasons, and he doesn’t tell us everything. We mustn’t go prying into secrets he doesn’t want us to know.”

“But the rumors are already rampant outside, and many people are secretly discussing it,” Draco seemed oblivious to the warning in his mother’s words and continued relentlessly, “I even heard that the Dark Lord is ordering people to collect corpses for him, lots of dead bodies, all kinds of creatures. And who is that witch who suddenly appeared next to the Dark Lord? What did he send her to find? Many people were sent to that place; there was an accident last time, and many people died.”

“That place is a dangerous ancient magical ruin. According to the Ministry’s records, many people died during the initial excavation before the door was found. If that witch is leading the digging now, it’s no surprise there are casualties,” said Lucius. “As for the bodies … if it’s really as I suspect, if the Dark Lord has completed his Dark magic, then the number of dead so far is nothing. Many more will die before it’s over. But your mother is right, Draco — it’s none of our concern. We are not to be involved.”

There was another moment of silence outside. Harry could hear Draco’s breathing — quick and uneven.

He seemed emotionally unstable due to excitement, tension, or fear; even his breathing was trembling.

Although Harry couldn’t see Draco’s face, he could still sense his emotional changes.

Thinking about it, it was actually quite normal for Draco to be afraid.

Voldemort was collecting corpses and ordering the digging of the Archway of Death — Harry knew all this. He’d heard Evan analyze it many times before; the Dark magic Lucius mentioned was the magic Voldemort used to transform himself into an evil god. However, judging from the conversation outside, the Death Eaters didn’t seem entirely clear about Voldemort’s plans.

They were merely uneasy, and rightly so. None of it sounded good.

“What do you plan to do with the Weasley boy downstairs?” Draco asked after a pause. “Use him to lure Harry Potter out?”

His voice was steadier now. At the mention of Ron, Harry immediately strained his ears, every sense alert.

“Oh, you think Potter will come to save him?” Lucius asked dryly.

“He will. That arrogant fool — the so-called savior of the world — he wouldn’t be able to stop himself,” said Draco, his voice thick with disdain.

“That’s such a pity. If we had caught Potter, we could have used him to win back the Dark Lord’s trust — at the very least, to ease his wrath,” Lucius said slowly. “Such a waste… If we had more time, we might have tried. But the Dark Lord sent orders this morning — the boy is to be moved soon. He’s being sent to the excavation site of the Door, under that witch’s supervision .”
