- H.P.S.T Chapter 1665: Seeking Death Through Death
The Land of Death!
The former territory of the Ravenclaw family, the location where wizards from the Ministry of Magic first discovered the Veil of Death.
A few days ago at Bellatrix’s place, Evan had used Legilimency to peer into her mind and had seen that place before. He saw many wizards in black cloaks rummaging through something amid a landscape full of ruins and wreckage. Figures flickered in and out of sight, mountain shadows loomed in the distance, and the soil underfoot was a lifeless, dead black.
And in the ruins stood a tree, a colossal tree, awe-inspiring.
The tree was withered and dead, not a trace of green to be seen, but instead covered with the carcasses of ravens.
It was a place filled with the aura of death, dark and eerie.
A unique atmosphere seemed to permeate the air; even though he had only witnessed it through someone else’s memory, Evan could clearly sense it.
He disliked it; he felt evil and foreboding there.
“You plan to go to the Land of Death to find Potter and Weasley?” Lucius grinned maliciously. “That’s brave. I wouldn’t dare go there. Legend has it that after Rowena Ravenclaw’s death, her family lands were cursed.”
“Hmm, cursed?”
“Evil Dark magic poured out from the Ravenclaw family’s ancestral home, blotting out the sky. The waters of the surrounding lake vanished overnight, and a terrible plague swept through, claiming all life in the area. The once-living land became a veritable forbidden zone, the air thick with the stench of death. In the centuries that followed, every wizard who tried to enter the Ravenclaw family’s ancestral home died; none met a peaceful end.” Lucius’s voice trailed off, becoming almost a whisper. “There are many rumors. Some say that place connects to Hell itself, right behind the Ministry’s Veil. They say it was discovered deep within the Ravenclaw estate.”
“A nice story, but I’ve never heard of it,” said Evan dismissively.
He knew that Lady Ravenclaw came from the tranquil lakes; the Sorting Hat had told them that at the start of term.
As for any other information about the Ravenclaw family, he had never been able to find anything in books.
In Wizarding history, after Lady Ravenclaw’s death, the once-glorious Ravenclaw family suddenly vanished without a trace, quietly withdrawing from the stage of history. In later centuries of magical history, no record related to the Ravenclaws could be found — an odd and suspicious disappearance indeed.
However, Evan had never associated it with any sort of curse; such a thought was simply too far-fetched.
He knew Lady Ravenclaw’s power very well, better than any wizard alive today.
Because of this understanding, Evan knew that Lady Ravenclaw’s power and terror lay not only in her wisdom but also in the magical mastery she held over soul and time.
If she wished, she could influence or alter any event at any point in time.
Although she had died a thousand years ago, she existed eternally on the timeline, and could reappear at any moment. Unlike immortality achieved by preserving body or soul, Lady Ravenclaw, through her extraordinary wisdom and mastery of time magic, had achieved immortality from another perspective.
Therefore, Evan didn’t believe the Ravenclaw family could have been destroyed by some overwhelming curse.
Unless, of course, it had been Lady Ravenclaw’s own will.
She had once told Evan that she hated the bloodline talent she had inherited from her family, hated that enviable intelligence.
Because becoming the wisest witch in the world required paying the price of losing all emotions — and that was a curse.
Lady Ravenclaw had said she hoped she would be the last in her family to inherit that bloodline gift. Could it be that…
Evan recalled his conversation with Lady Ravenclaw when he returned to Hogwarts a thousand years ago, and the more he thought, the more everything seemed shrouded in mystery.
Seeing Evan drifting into thought, Lucius seemed to assume he was frightened, and continued in his lazy tone, “Of course you haven’t heard of these things, Mason. This is top secret of the Ministry. After the Veil of Death was discovered, all information about that area was forbidden to be disseminated. You won’t find it in Hogwarts Library, not even in the Restricted Section. Only those of truly noble, ancient families have the opportunity to access it. Families like the Malfoys…”
He was referring to confidential information related to the Department of Mysteries — knowledge classified at the highest level.
Even within the Ministry, only Unspeakables possessed such knowledge. Many secrets were beyond even the Minister’s authority.
As for how the Malfoys obtained such intel — it was highly likely bought with gold.
The Ministry never had true secrets; it was just a matter of whether one was willing to pay the corresponding price.
“Many terrible things happened there. Should I tell you in detail?”
“No, Mr. Malfoy, I’m not interested in vague legends,” Evan quickly organized his thoughts and said, “If, as you say, it became a forbidden zone overnight, there must be a reason, and I’m confident I can uncover this mystery.”
“You’re very confident, Mason. Hopefully, it’s not just foolish bravery,” said Lucius sarcastically.
“I hope so too,” Evan replied without arguing. He had trump cards Malfoy didn’t know about — Ravenclaw’s diadem and the Time-Turner — both capable of helping him uncover the truth. But there was no need to reveal any of that to Malfoy. “What I hope for now is that you can tell me where that place is.”
“I have a detailed map of the Land of Death here, with all the information you need,” said Lucius. “But I must remind you again, you may not be afraid of those ancient legends, but if you really intend to go there, you’d better be careful of the Dark Witch. That woman is nothing like ordinary Dark witches; she’s even more terrifying than most Death Eaters. She’s there searching for the secrets related to the Veil of Death for the Dark Lord, seeking death with death.”
“‘Seeking death with death?’” Evan repeated, puzzled. He didn’t quite understand what that meant.
“That’s the most evil witchcraft, boy!” Lucius raised his voice. “No one knows what the Dark Witch is looking for, but too many people have died there recently. They’re using the power of death to cast spells, to explore the ancient and evil source of power buried beneath that land.”
Casting spells with the power of death — it sounded horrifying.
“Well, thank you for the warning, Mr. Malfoy,” said Evan. “I thought you were hoping I’d die!”
“Hmph, what good would that do the Malfoys?!” Lucius continued. “Once a Malfoy pays a price, he needs an equal return. I don’t want you to die because of your stupidity until I receive that return. But if you really did die, I suppose it wouldn’t be the worst outcome.”
“Believe me, if that were to happen, it would be a disaster for the Malfoys,” said Evan. “You won’t regret what you’ve done today, Mr. Malfoy, but to achieve that common goal, we may both have to work a little harder.”
