Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 26 (Part 1):
“Hunting.”
It was a firm voice.
“Are you confident in hunting?”
In the human world, there is something called money. And this money is given in exchange for goods or labor.
Helmut was penniless, and he needed money to travel. After looking around the village, Helmut thought about what he could do to earn money.
The answer was hunting. It wasn’t going to be difficult to catch rabbits or deer that weren’t monsters but merely running around.
“That’s right, this guy is exceptionally good at hunting.”
Phien patted Helmut’s shoulder and raised his voice. There was a determination to push forward. Miles’ expression softened.
“Hmm, well. That’s a good advantage. The journey is long, so occasionally hunting for meat will be necessary. Alright, I’ll accept you on behalf of the Face Mercenary Corps. But since you’re an extra member, I’ll only pay 80% of the usual wage. Any objections?”
“No.”
When Helmut agreed so readily, Miles regretted not offering only 70%. However, he liked that Helmut understood things quickly.
Phien quickly stepped forward.
“Here.”
Miles took the document Phien handed over.
Rank 2 Gold Medal Phien.
Rank 3 Silver Medal Tanya, Bern, Uter, Maros, Sean.
Rand 4 Bronze Medal Helmut, Finn.
Miles checked the list of mercenaries participating in this mission for the Face Mercenary Corps, signed the document, and handed it back.
“Then it’s decided. We leave at seven in the morning tomorrow, so be prepared.”
As he turned and disappeared, Phien patted Helmut’s shoulder again.
“That went well. But are you sure you’re okay? You seem almost fully recovered from the dueling.”
Phien saw the potential of a rank 3 mercenary in Helmut’s movements. No, even the potential to reach rank 2.
For a boy of only fourteen, the possibilities were endless.
‘A good talent has been recruited. He may not stay long, but…’
Once a connection is made, when Helmut wishes to seriously pursue a mercenary life later, he will look for the Face Mercenary Corps.
Bringing Helmut into the group was also an investment for the mercenary group. Investments need to be pleasing.
It was true that the boy had caught the eyes of the people in the mercenary group.
Helmut nodded.
“Yes, there’s no problem.”
Tanya is said to be a skilled fighter among rank 2 mercenaries, but if he were to lose easily to her, his physical condition must still not be right.
Just a few days ago, he was close to death. The fact that he was walking around now was a miracle of recovery for a human.
It would have been nice to have a bit more leisure, but it was advantageous to act together with the Face Mercenary Corps.
It was time to start training in Vis. Before this mission ends, the goal was to recover his original strength.
Phien advised.
“Our mission is an escort, and Finn will tell you what to do. Unless there’s a sudden attack, there’s no need for you guys to fight.”
Rank 4 mercenaries were essentially considered non-combat personnel. Especially young Helmut and Finn were not intended for battle.
“From tomorrow, we will act together with the Tariq Mercenary Corps. It’s a fairly large-scale mission involving two mercenary corps .”
Other mercenaries joined in the conversation.
“Even if the Tariq Mercenary Corps guys start something, just ignore and let it slide.”
“They’re not too happy with us. Our corps is more successful and has a better reputation, so they’re envious.”
“Moreover, there was a big mission before, and although it was initially given to them, the client changed their mind and gave it to us instead. We were unaware. They must have been quite upset.”
“But they won’t cause trouble in front of the client. Minor annoyances, maybe, but…”
“Finn tends to get excited easily, so keep an eye on him. We don’t want any internal conflicts.”
“I don’t get excited that easily! Really.”
Even the fiercest beast is cautious during recovery.
Helmut was already planning to keep a low profile, regardless of their warnings.
“Lucky us. I mean, what kind of talk was that? That old man. A Rank 4 mercenary is still a mercenary, but he’s being so stingy cutting the pay.”
While Finn ranted about Miles, Helmut thought about his future tasks.
Finn, who had been bothering him by talking continuously even in the dormitory, finally went to bed late at night, claiming he was sleepy.
Helmut was then able to go out to the clearing where they had sparred earlier. The other mercenaries would be resting in preparation for tomorrow’s mission.
‘Now that the nuisance is gone.’
Helmut knew Finn cared about him, but frankly, it was annoying. He mulled over their conversation.
‘Do you know about Vis training method?’
‘Of course. I learned it too, but it didn’t seem very effective. They say you need to train consistently from a very young age for it to be effective, so many give up. Even among rank 3 mercenaries, only the skilled ones can handle it a bit.’
He had seen Finn swinging his sword, but he had not seen him training with Vis many times.
In fact, his posture was so awkward it could hardly be called proper Vis training.
It was natural for mercenaries who did not have a proper master. There were not many people who perfectly learned the training method and trained Vis daily as Helmut had.
Though Vis training had become widespread, mastering it properly was challenging.
Darien had rigorously trained him from the basics.
Nobles from sword families or academy graduates, knights, were the ones who went to such lengths. Even less so among mercenaries.
Not only through Vis training could one master Vis.
A well-trained body and regulated breathing attract Vis. As the skill in swordsmanship increases, so does the spirit’s ability to draw in Vis.
However, focusing solely on swordsmanship without proper Vis training was not a good approach.
No matter how skilled in swordsmanship, without Vis, one cannot surpass the physical limits. Vis allows one to break free from those limits.
Conversely, training only in Vis was meaningless. Without a disciplined body and mind, controlling Vis was impossible.
Trying to gather Vis without control could twist the energy and harm or even kill the body.
That’s why Darien always emphasized balance.
‘Tanya and Phien seemed to pay more attention to Vis training than the other mercenaries.’
During a previous duel, Tanya did not use Vis extensively but utilized it to strengthen her muscles.
Because of that, Helmut could sense a faint aura of Vis from her.
He was unsure how well she could handle Vis, but he felt confident in facing her once he regained his strength.
Helmut was filled with a desire for revenge. Losing in his first duel after coming out had left him extremely frustrated.
‘I’ll start today.’
