Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 26 (Part 2):
Having focused on recovery until now, Helmut planned to start moving Vis gradually. He grasped a wooden sword and took his stance. The formal Vis training taught by Darien unfolded.
‘I succeeded.’
After a round of training, Helmut frowned, clenching and unclenching his hand. Sweat drenched him as if it were raining.
Attempting his usual routine, he nearly twisted the Vis due to the slight burden, causing pain.
Therefore, Helmut had to slow down, moving more slowly but accurately.
Yet, after completing the training, his body felt lighter and more comfortable.
‘I’m faster than before?’
Living in the Forest of Roots, it was impossible to be completely free from magic.
The sacred barrier not only burned the seed of darkness but also the magic deeply embedded in Helmut’s body.
The power of purification spread like fire on oil, trying to burn all magic without a trace.
They say the pain of burns is among the greatest a human can experience. Helmut felt as though he was burning alive in hell.
His body fought desperately to survive in that hell. His flesh became soft and ruptured, barely healing in time.
But a body that has reached its limit is not the same as before. It became more robust, with faster recovery, clean as a newborn’s.
Previously, it was like pouring water on ordinary soil, but now it was like drought-stricken land greedily absorbing water, rapidly absorbing Vis.
Helmut carefully assessed his condition.
‘Ten days, that should be enough.’
It might even take less time. As Vis accumulates, his recovery will improve.
Helmut hesitated before attempting another round of Vis training.
Hadn’t Darien always said? Hurrying might actually set you back. Considering the pace, more Vis training today seemed unwise.
‘No need to rush. I’m recovering.’
Helmut planned out his actions from the moment he left the Forest of Roots. Time was on his side.
While on a mission, personal time might be limited, but he could train Vis at night. Despite the itch to do more, he had to be patient.
Helmut was a boy with unparalleled patience.
The next day, Phien gathered the mercenaries before departure.
“Let’s go! It’s an important mission, so stay alert. We’ve been paid generously!”
“We need to earn our keep.”
Tanya grinned confidently. As an experienced mercenary, she was relaxed, as were the other rank 3 mercenaries. Only Finn, taking on his first mission, was nervous.
“Ugh, I feel like I’m going to throw up everything I ate this morning.”
Having emptied three large plates of soup and bread since morning, it was no wonder his stomach was upset.
“Hey, weakling. Are you okay? Starting today, it’s going to be really tough. You have to watch the horses, fetch water, and walk all day. Can you handle it?”
Finn asked mockingly. Helmut had shown promise in the duel with Tanya.
But the image of him sweating profusely while struggling to keep up was still fresh.
Finn still considered Helmut a weakling who had learned a bit of swordplay.
“Again, my name is not weakling; it’s Helmut. I can handle it.”
Helmut corrected him firmly, his expression hardening.
Helmut was a bit angry. He knew that in the human world, strength and weakness didn’t determine everything, but Finn’s attitude had been bothering him.
Weak but unaware of their weakness, climbing and scraping up.
Helmut is a human from the Forest of Roots. A world where it’s entirely natural for the weak to submit to the strong.
Of course, he did not obey and live, but he did not underestimate Darien or Elaga.
‘It seems he’s putting me completely below him.’
The attitude of a boy of the same age, clearly inferior, was naturally irritating.
However, Helmut had reasons for not being able to discipline Finn. Finn was one of the people who had saved him, along with Tanya.
And there was an inexplicable unease.
To Helmut’s eyes, Tanya didn’t seem all that strong. Yet, he had been completely defeated by her.
‘I won’t lose to this guy.?’
No matter how much his body hadn’t fully recovered, it would be quite pathetic if he lost.
‘Let’s see once I’m fully recovered.’
Thinking of the future, Helmut’s gaze turned cold.
‘Why does this guy look so fierce all of a sudden? His eyes are already pitch black. Did calling him weakling make him angry?’
A speck of instinct made Finn wary. The boy might be of high birth despite his amnesia; angering him wouldn’t be wise.
He smiled warmly, placing his hand on Helmut’s shoulder.
“Right, Helmut. Hey, I’m just worried about you. Why so serious?”
Finn quickly changed his tone.
“Ah, anyway, let’s do our best. It’s our first mission!”
“Right.”
Be generous to the weak. Helmut recalled Darien’s teaching and decided to let it go for now. There would be a chance to repay.
Helmut was determined, his eyes cold, as they set off on their mission.
