Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 29 (Part 1):
Passing through a demonic beast-infested zone without a single attack is impossible. The weaker ones were cautious, but not the big and strong ones.
It had been a while since prey rolled in abundance; if they let them go easily, they wouldn’t be called demonic beasts.
There was no meat as tender and savory as human flesh for the demonic beasts.
Even seasoned mercenaries couldn’t maintain tension all day. It was natural to relax a bit right after lunch in broad daylight.
In the middle of the procession, a third-rank mercenary from the Tariq Mercenary Corps was almost turning his water bottle upside down, trying to drink from it.
“Why isn’t any water coming out?”
Grumbling with his neck cranked upwards, a dark shadow covered his view in an instant.
‘What’s that?’
There was no time to draw his sword. Something that fell from the tree shadow above crashed onto him like a flash.
Thud!
A demonic beast had bitten the unprotected neck and chewed with a crunching sound.
Horrible liquid dripped to the ground with a splattering sound.
“It’s a demonic beast!”
“Oh, my God! Billy!”
Billy, with half his neck gone, had already breathed his last. Blood and flesh dripped from between the demonic beast’s teeth.
It was a grotesque demonic beast resembling a giant monkey, with long limbs and a purplish face.
Magical energy flowed from the beast, spreading out faintly. A powerful demonic beast was rare to see in the outside world, capable of releasing magical energy.
Its lips curled up in satisfaction, almost as if mocking them.
“Argh!”
A mercenary, excited by the death of a comrade, recklessly drew his sword and charged at the beast.
“Stop!”
“Don’t just rush in!”
-Kieek!
A sharp scream echoed. The sound filled with magical energy paralyzed the body.
The demonic beast lightly flicked the sword aimed at it with its magically imbued claws and swiftly burrowed into the faltering mercenary’s embrace.
Crack! A chilling sound was heard. The demonic beast’s hand pierced through the muscled body of the mercenary as if it were paper, taking his heart with it.
The beast, pulling out the pulsating heart, bounced it in its palm and chuckled mischievously.
The demonic beast was enjoying the murder. Moreover, it was underestimating them. So many mercenaries!
The mercenaries in front tensed up in fear. Their limbs trembled. The dreadful and brutal scene stoked their fear.
In front of this powerful demonic beast, trained mercenaries seemed like mere herbivores.
Such a demonic beast was rarely encountered even by experienced mercenaries.
They were a bit worried about entering a demonic beast-infested zone, but they didn’t think it would dare to attack so many people.
‘I was too careless.’
Had they known such a demonic beast lived here, they wouldn’t have come.
The forest, almost devoid of passersby and thus lacking information, was mistaken for being manageable despite its abundance of beasts.
-Kieeeee.
The demonic beast chewed the heart in its hand like biting into an apple. Crunch, crunch. Black, blunt claws and a face smeared with blood.
The beast, tilting its head, threw the corpse with a gaping chest towards the forest.
The body, thrown into the air, made no sound upon hitting the ground. Someone muttered in disgust.
“He’s sharing with his subordinates.”
The presence of other demonic beasts was felt around. Rustling sounds accompanied a group of beasts surrounding the carriage!
While the beast leisurely ate, the formation of the procession quickly changed.
Two second-rank mercenaries from the Tariq Mercenary Corps took the lead, and Phien joined them. They were the head, and the remaining third-rank mercenaries were the wings.
They fought back to back against the carriage. A full combat stance.
“Get under the carriage! Don’t foolishly stand out!”
Tanya, with a grim face, gestured with her chin. There were five carriages. The attack occurred near the second one.
Having watched the entire scene, Finn shivered and crawled under the fifth carriage.
Helmut hesitated for a moment before following Finn. The carriage was low enough for an adult man’s lower body to fit.
“Draw your sword and stab any that try to crawl in. You can do that much, right?”
Tanya advised and signaled to the other mercenaries. They had to keep formation. Otherwise, they might not be able to care for the fourth-rank mercenaries.
In the center carriage were Miles and the traders. His carriage was particularly sturdy, but that didn’t mean it was safe. The client’s safety came first.
If necessary, they would abandon everything and only take the third carriage to escape.
“Helmut, Finn!”
“Yes.”
Helmut responded. Finn was already in a panic. It seemed unlikely he could do anything. Helmut slapped his cheek. Slap!
“Pull yourself together.”
Admittedly, there was a bit of personal satisfaction. He had wanted to hit him several times before.
“What are you doing!”
After a solid hit, Finn’s eyes blazed as he shouted. He quickly drew his sword.
“Oh, what kind of damn situation is this? Ai, are you going to the next world from the first request?”
His mumbling showed his mind had returned. Helmut calmly peered outside from under the carriage to assess the situation.
‘If that thing has intelligence, it might command the beasts under his command.’
Rather than charging straightforwardly, it would try to drain their strength by hitting and running.
With so many of them, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say they intended to capture this group entirely.
The beasts, expecting a feast, gleamed with red eyes. The bright sunlight did nothing to diminish their dark glint.
