Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 307 (Part 2): Greencana
From the very beginning, it wasn’t ordinary. Although the spirits weren’t plowing fields or pulling carts, this village, where elemental mages had settled, had some unusual traits.
“The village is just beyond there.”
They were almost at their destination. Antiol had opened the way for them to come this far.
It wasn’t that far, and traveling through the passage he’d created was easier than using teleportation magic.
Antiol seemed to know about the village of Greencana.
“I visited that village several times for research. It was decades ago. Sian, I even know about your parents.”
“Really? Then will you come with us?”
“No, I need to monitor the temple’s movements and the sacred barrier for a while. After all, follow-up is important in any matter.”
With a calm face, he told Alea to contact him if needed, then closed the passage and disappeared.
Heike also did not join them, as she had her own matters to attend to. Mages were a breed that must constantly conduct research.
“I need to focus on my research until the artifact is completed. That seems to be the most urgent matter.”
Heike’s eyes sparkled like a young girl’s, having found a new research topic.
Of course, it wasn’t just for research purposes. To avoid catching the temple’s attention, it was important to conceal the existence of those two beasts.
Until the artifact needed by Elaga and Igrelle was completed, Greencana would be a good hiding place. Staying at Antiol’s place would only make them restless.
Even during the period when the temple oppressed mages, Greencana was hidden by the power of the earth spirit and its unique abilities.
Sian was anxious, but this dangerous group had nowhere more suitable to go.
In Greencana, an elemental mage could wield power exceeding that of an archmage.
After all, the earth spirit that existed there was akin to a god.
‘The elemental mages of Greencana are still mages. They won’t overreact to demonic beasts. But regardless of how open-minded they are, those two beasts are too threatening. It’s better they don’t reveal themselves to the villagers.’
“For now, both of you, refrain from using demonic energy. That transformation now is as delicate as a piece of paper. Even though I’ve reinforced it, a little shock will break it. Igrelle, will you be okay without flying for a while?”
Igrelle shrugged her shoulders.
“No problem. I’ll take this chance to adapt to human life.”
[I’m fine since I’ve only become a bit smaller.]
“Then, before the transformation wears off, I’ll see you again with the artifact. I hope you all enjoy yourselves.”
Heike waved her hand and immediately disappeared with teleportation magic. With that, the group that remained was now smaller than before.
Alea, Igrelle, Charlotte—the three women. Helmut, Sian, Asuka—the three men.
Though Elaga was male, he couldn’t really be called a man. Right now, he was just a cat perched on Helmut’s shoulder.
[Your shoulder is narrow and uncomfortable. Humans are really not good as mounts.]
“Then get off.”
[Why should I when I finally have a chance to use you as a mount? Keep walking. You’ve finally become useful, haven’t you?]
Helmut felt a sudden urge to grab Elaga by the scruff of the neck and throw him away.
But if Helmut had one exceptional quality, it was his patience in restraining that urge.
He silently continued to walk, planning to set Elaga down somewhere once they arrived at the village.
And as Sian had mentioned, just ahead, the village came into view.
*
As always, the peaceful village of Greencana, Rodril’s little house, was bustling with commotion.
The commotion stemmed from a letter that had arrived that morning.
“Sian is coming back!”
“Didn’t that rascal say he was going off for dangerous research?”
“Didn’t he say to consider him dead if he doesn’t return?”
“That brat! Just wait till he gets back!”
A man’s deep voice echoed. A gentle-looking woman tried to dissuade him as he raised his fist.
“Dear, don’t scold him right away. Coming back safe is all that matters. We should at least hear what he has to say. He’s always been such a model student.”
“Where does he get off disappearing without a word to his parents just because he’s grown up?!”
“He said he’d explain when he got back. Also, didn’t our Sian mention he was bringing some friends?”
“He must have fallen in with some bad company at the academy. Time to set him straight!”
Sian’s father seemed already engrossed in playing the role of ‘the father correcting his wayward son.’ It seemed that, because Sian had always been such an exemplary student, he was finally seizing the chance to give him a scolding.
In that sense, Asuka and Sian were complete opposites.
While Asuka was the troublemaker, Sian, though occasionally slacking off with him, was the amicable honor student who consistently ranked second at the academy.
When the commotion subsided and each had returned to their tasks, the woman suddenly looked up into the air.
“Hmm? Looks like someone’s at the village entrance.”
Their home was in the innermost part of Greencana, close to the mountains. Situated where lush leaves cast shadows over the roof.
Without even using magic, it was as if she could see, her gaze fixed in the air as she murmured.
“It’s Sian. And probably his friends? Oh my.”
Before she could finish speaking, Sian’s father had kicked open the door and dashed out.
“He must have been very worried all this time. But…”
Sian’s mother tilted her head.
“Those friends don’t look ordinary. And there’s something else.”
Sensing something, her expression turned serious, her eyes growing cold.
An unfamiliar and dangerous presence. Something that might threaten the safety of the village.
“I should go too.”
Standing up, she followed the path her husband had taken.
