Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 31 (Part 2):
It might not be able to speak, but if a creature with high intelligence develops demonic nature, it can understand speech.
Most humans wouldn’t think it possible to converse with a demonic beast.
But Helmut was different. He grew up in the Forest of Roots, where it wasn’t strange for demonic beasts to talk.
-Kieee.
The monkey demonic beast looked at Helmut as if observing him. Compared to his body, it was a tiny young human.
Soft flesh and thin bones, it would be tender to chew.
It didn’t like that this human wasn’t trembling in fear like others.
Moreover, it was a bit strange. Though human, it faintly felt like a demonic beast.
“If you attack me, you’ll die.”
Helmut stated bluntly. Demonic beasts know how to gauge the strength of their opponents.
Helmut met the creature’s gaze, revealing his Vis, which was mixed with faint magical energy.
His body was faintly enveloped by a gray aura, similar to how demonic beasts emit magical energy.
Feeling the formidable aura, the creature bristled its fur, screaming threateningly as it infused its cry with magical energy.
-KIEEEEEEEK!
Helmut commented, almost disdainfully,
“Shouting like that will wake the humans, won’t it?”
Indeed, noise began to stir in the campsite. Rustling and clanking sounds followed as people woke up and grabbed their weapons.
The once silent atmosphere tightened with tension. Helmut pointed towards Kelop’s body.
“I’ll give it to you, so just take that body away.”
Having a pierced back didn’t matter much, but the slashes on the legs were a problem. He had intended to kill and bury or dispose of the body, but this could work out.
Or is it?
‘I regret not finishing it with my own hands.’
He wavered. His hand reached for his sword again.
This monkey demonic beast, should he kill it to prove his strength? How much would the Butan Trading Company raise his pay?
He was slightly conflicted.
However, considering Tanya’s reaction earlier, there was something off. It was unclear if it was the right situation to reveal his strength.
Humans, awoken and armed, were approaching from the direction of the screams.
The demonic beast, without its minions and facing humans alone, needed to make a quick decision. Whether to attack and flee or simply flee.
The creature hesitated. The unsettling aura Helmut exuded confused it.
The faint magical energy felt in Helmut’s aura was too strong to be underestimated.
But the one in front was just a human, after all. Prey, according to his demonic instinct.
A normal demonic beast would have attacked the human before it, following its instinct without realizing the human’s strength, but its high intelligence held it back.
The decision not to attack was clear. However, to flee just like that was against its pride. Pride, intelligence, and instinct were in turmoil.
While the torch-bearing mercenaries got increasingly closer.
Glancing back and forth between the people and Helmut, the creature finally moved.
-KIEEE.
As if saying, “See you next time,” it made a sound and leaped away.
Not forgetting to grab Kelop’s body, the creature jumped up a tree and disappeared.
Helmut sighed. It was a mix of relief and disappointment.
He was left alone.
Helmut thought about how to explain this situation as he moved towards the campsite.
Someone spotted him from the opposite side and shouted,
“Who’s there!”
“Who is it? A person?”
“It’s me.”
Helmut raised his hand. Recognizing his voice, the members of the Pace Mercenary Corps quickly approached.
“Helmut?”
Under the moonlight, Helmut’s face appeared pale, as if he had nearly encountered a disaster.
“Why are you here?”
“Let’s go back to the campsite and talk.”
Phien grabbed Helmut’s shoulder and led him. Surrounded by the Pace Mercenary Corps, Helmut returned to the campsite.
Miles was waiting with a serious look at the campsite. Helmut was led in front of Miles.
Others were likely to conduct a search around.
Standing among the stern-faced mercenaries, Helmut faced Miles. The wrinkles on his forehead seemed to reflect his worries.
Two 2nd-rank mercenaries of the Tariq mercenary corps besides Phien and Tanya, were present. The questions fell like an interrogation.
“Explain what happened.”
“Why were you in that place?”
“You know you shouldn’t leave the campsite recklessly.”
Helmut responded calmly,
“I was going to relieve myself. I thought it might smell, so I went a bit farther.”
They seemed to understand, but their expressions were sour. Only Tanya rebuked,
“Still, there was an attack earlier. It was reckless of you! You should have told someone.”
“Tanya, now’s not the time to argue about right and wrong.”
When Phien intervened, Miles waved his hand.
“Go on, continue.”
“I was walking away from the campsite when I realized someone was following me. It was Kelop.”
“Kelop?”
The two 2nd-rank mercenaries of the Tariq corps looked at each other. Only now did they realize Kelop was missing.
“That guy still hasn’t come to his senses!”
Tanya burst out angrily. The listeners seemed to be on her side. Maybe he had a knack for piecing stories together?
Helmut continued seriously,
“He tried to catch me, so I ran away. I ended up further from the campsite, and suddenly, the beast from before appeared. The big one. It had followed me here.”
Tension spread across everyone’s faces. This was the creature that had killed two 3rd-rank mercenaries. Their vigilance was heightened.
“It probably thought Kelop was more appetizing than me because it attacked him. And when people started waking up, it took Kelop and ran away. That’s the end of it.”
