Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 311 (Part 2):
The people of Greencana, who had enjoyed a relatively prosperous life compared to other villages, were adapting without complaint for now.
“But at a time like this, you just left a single letter and disappeared, not knowing where you went, and we couldn’t even go out to look for you. We were so worried, wondering if it might be related to Veneta. Do you understand how much we worried?”
Sian bowed his head submissively to Terra’s reproach.
“I’m sorry.”
Alea spoke up.
“It seems we’ve visited at an inconvenient time.”
“Don’t worry about it. Since Rodril established this village, do you think this is the only storm that has hit Greencana? Storms always pass eventually.”
Charlotte cautiously asked.
“Have you tried talking with the new king?”
“No, neither Terra nor I felt comfortable going out to make contact. They might have set a trap for spirit mages, so we can’t trust them. We can’t both leave the village empty, and we can’t send someone else when we can’t guarantee their safety, so we decided to wait until they make contact.”
There must be an unusual intention behind trying to isolate a small village like Greencana.
They likely had business with the spirit mage Rodril. Whatever it was, they would reveal their demands soon enough.
It was frustrating, but they could endure for now.
“The only worry is that for now, they’re just isolating Greencana, but we don’t know what they’ll do next. It doesn’t hurt to be careful.”
Sian shook his head.
“So you’re not letting Siena go out either because they might target villagers. You should have told her. She’s old enough to understand that much.”
Terra sighed.
“Siena is the type who would charge out and try to capture whoever is targeting her. It’s better that she doesn’t know.”
Charlotte, who had been listening carefully to the conversation, asked.
“What kind of person is the new king of Veneta? Is he a warrior?”
Azer turned his gaze to her.
“Yes, we’ve gathered some information about him. They say the new king is skilled with the sword and has a fair bit of cunning.”
He continued, “Apparently, he fought a succession war with his brothers and emerged as the victor, taking the throne. They say he killed three of his siblings. More than that, many others also lost their lives. Although they say he’s not needlessly cruel, he’s known for making bold decisions.”
“So he’s not a thoughtless fool or a tyrant,” Charlotte remarked.
“Right, he was originally the prince with the weakest faction, so considering he seized the throne, we should consider him rather clever.”
Charlotte’s thoughts suddenly extended to Renosa. This wasn’t an unfamiliar story to her.
Hadn’t she also been dealing with her sibling’s schemes? And her own brother who was very intelligent and knew how to make bold decisions.
‘He might not be like Michael, but he’s probably not an easy opponent.’
Information about the Kingdom of Veneta that she knew as the Duchess of Renosa flashed quickly through her mind. After a moment, Charlotte spoke.
“He must be trying to fill the empty treasury that was depleted during the succession war. Also, having ascended to the throne with difficulty, he must want to strengthen his royal authority to secure his position.”
“You think so?”
“Yes, and this probably won’t end here. If he’s the type to make bold decisions, it wouldn’t be surprising if something drastic happens. He’s pressuring Greencana to gain leverage, so that when he finally states his demands, it’ll be easier for him to get what he wants.”
“So the reason he’s using such a troublesome method is because the demand is so difficult that we wouldn’t accept it if he just asked outright?”
“Yes, I don’t think it’s about money. The tax is just a pretext.”
It wasn’t clear yet whether there was something they wanted from Greencana, or if there was something they wanted to achieve through Greencana.
To deal with any situation, one needs to think of ways to cope in advance.
Charlotte made a resolution.
‘If it comes down to negotiating with the King of Veneta, my bloodline as Renosa might prove useful.’
She had been taught not to misuse the Renosa name, but using it when necessary wasn’t misuse. Even for the new king of Veneta, he wouldn’t want to create conflict with Renosa.
Even if it reached Michael’s ears, as long as she kept quiet about it, it would be too much for him to interfere with distant Greencana.
After all, it might turn the world’s most powerful spirit mage into an enemy.
“Since we’ve had a meal, if you need any help, just call us,” Asuka said confidently. Having escaped the tedious academy, and not having had enough fighting in the Forest of Roots, who cares about some king of Veneta or whatever?
If given a reason to fight, Asuka could fight anyone, no matter who the opponent was.
Helmut coldly said, “We’re guests, so let’s stay quiet for now. Don’t cause any trouble.”
Unlike Asuka, Helmut had more reasons to keep a low profile. Asuka closed his mouth, disgruntled.
Igrelle, listening to their conversation, gleamed with interest.
‘The King of Veneta? A blockade? Does that mean there’s going to be a war between humans? How entertaining.’
As a demonic beast, she had promised not to eat humans, but fighting in a human body could be fun too.
Igrelle was indeed a demonic beast who didn’t shy away from a fight.
Unlike Igrelle, who was burning with curiosity, Elaga, in cat form, showed no interest in Greencana’s crisis.
He was just feeling full and letting out a burp.
