Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 314 (Part 2):
If this Earth Spirit was similar to Lumen, it was a god-like being. It would have easily known about everything happening on earth.
The white sphere, having endured everything, appeared to be in its original state.
But Helmut could tell. The light had dimmed, even if only slightly.
The white sphere vanished, and suddenly a scene flickered in the air. It was a forest.
Seeing the translucent barrier, it was likely a forest near the Sacred Barrier.
However, the lush, vibrant grass and trees suddenly lost their vitality and withered.
The birdsong ceased, and the chirping of insects faded. As if touched by the breath of death.
Yet, the Sacred Barrier still shone white. A chill ran down his spine.
“Is this…actually happening?”
The two eyes blinked slowly. Helmut spoke succinctly.
“Why?”
Countless assumptions raced through his mind. Because demonic energy had leaked out? No.
Even if it had, the Sacred Barrier would have purified it.
Helmut hardly carried any demonic energy himself, and Elaga and Igrelle didn’t leak demonic energy.
In the first place, demonic beasts grew stronger the more demonic energy they possessed. The cores of demonic beasts like Elaga and Igrelle would tightly grasp their demonic energy and not let a single drop escape.
So, the plants around the Sacred Barrier weren’t withering because of demonic energy.
Then the conclusion was…
“The Sacred Barrier is absorbing life force, isn’t it?”
The tremors when they escaped were significant, and because of that, the Sacred Barrier had weakened. It would have needed power to recover.
If the Sacred Barrier was Lumen himself, then it was possible by Lumen’s will.
However, holy power was considered a beneficial force. It was hard to imagine it taking away the surrounding life force.
In defiance of preconceived notions, Helmut arrived at an unthinkable conclusion.
“But is that a big problem? If it’s a temporary phenomenon.”
Even swordsmen, while absorbing Vis, could cause the surrounding grass to wither. It was the same for mages.
It was a natural phenomenon when a large amount of energy was absorbed from the surroundings at once.
The two eyes blinked rapidly. Twice this time.
‘So that’s a no.’
It wasn’t a temporary phenomenon. That meant the Sacred Barrier had weakened considerably, or it needed more holy power, to the extent that it needed to absorb the surrounding life force…
In any case, something was happening. Something ominous.
“If it’s my responsibility, is there anything I can do?”
The two eyes didn’t move this time. Neither affirmation nor negation. It meant the question was wrong.
After a moment, Helmut asked again.
“Not yet, is that what you mean?”
That there was nothing Helmut could do yet. But that he needed to know.
Because there would be something he could do in the coming future.
Only then did the two eyes blink again. Slowly, once. An affirmation.
Helmut spoke to the Earth Spirit. A clear and resolute voice flowed from his lips.
“If this is happening because of me, I will take responsibility.”
His sword existed for that very purpose.
Again, something black brushed past his eyes.
Helmut blinked. The world changed once more. The cool scent of grass filled his nostrils.
The original space in the forest. Mystical and peaceful. As if night and day had intersected.
Helmut removed his hand from the monolith. Terra, who had been silently standing beside him, asked.
“Did you have a good conversation?”
“Yes.”
If that could be called a conversation.
“I don’t know what it said to you, but I doubt it was a light matter.”
“Do you want to know?”
“If I were meant to know, it would have spoken to you through me. You don’t have to tell me. No, don’t tell me. I am human, and even as a mage, I cannot escape human preconceptions.”
Helmut flinched. But it hadn’t told him not to tell anyone else.
Helmut had been thinking about discussing this situation with Antiol or Alea.
As if sensing his thoughts, Terra smiled faintly.
“It’s only that I shouldn’t know, isn’t it? Whether you discuss it with your friends is up to you, Helmut. Do as you wish. But more importantly…”
Terra’s eyes narrowed.
“It seems something has happened in the village. We should go down and check.”
Without delay, the two quickly made their way down the path.
