Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 315 (Part 1):
The village was enveloped in a bustling atmosphere, palpable even from afar. Commotion usually stemmed from unpleasant events. An ominous feeling washed over them.
Terra’s house was crowded with villagers, their faces grim as they discussed matters with Azer.
They were in the middle of a meal, so they were guests.
Helmut and his companions observed their conversation.
Terra, having arrived in haste, raised her voice and asked,
“What happened?”
A tearful woman stepped forward and cried out,
“Terra, Ubert has been captured by Veneta!”
Azer, who had been standing with a frown etched between his brows, added,
“She’s right. Ubert has been taken. Look at this.”
He handed over a paper bearing the royal seal of Veneta. Terra read the words written on it.
“For trespassing on the King’s territory, punishment will be dealt. If you wish for the sinner’s return, prepare compensation.” Amanda, by any chance…did Ubert venture far from the village?”
The woman, called Amanda, nodded anxiously.
“Lately, no one has been able to leave the village because of the village’s policy. But Ubert is a herbalist! How can he work without going outside the village? He hadn’t checked on the herbs for a while, and he was worried…
Today, he said he was going to check on the herbs he planted, that he would go a little further out. Even so, it’s near the village. He said it was only about an hour away from here!”
“If the King of Veneta had his sights set here, he would’ve stationed soldiers nearby, waiting for someone to step out. Or perhaps a mage was involved. If they’re targeting Greencana, they’d have considered bringing a mage.”
Terra spoke calmly. She remained composed.
It wasn’t unexpected. If the King of Veneta intended to target Greencana, she had anticipated the possibility of someone being taken hostage.
The people of Greenؤana couldn’t remain within the village entirely. Although Azer regularly brought in supplies, there were limits.
The longer they were isolated, the more likely it became that someone would venture out.
Terra’s gaze settled on Amanda.
“I’m not blaming you. At this point, there’s no point in blame. We should focus on finding a way to bring Ubert back.”
“The one who brought this letter also brought this.”
Azer held up a blood-stained glove, faintly smeared rather than soaked in blood, as if wiped away after a resistance.
Amanda, her eyes reddened, nodded.
“That’s Ubert ’s glove.”
“They said if we try anything foolish, they’ll send his wrist next, not just the glove.”
“Oh, Ubert !”
Amanda covered her face with her hands. A deep sigh escaped Terra’s lips.
While their conversation took place, Helmut approached his companions standing to the side.
They had been listening intently, trying to grasp the situation amidst the sudden commotion.
Alea gave Helmut a nod.
“I heard you were out with Sian’s mother?”
“I’ll tell you later. More importantly, about this matter…”
“We can help, considering our circumstances here. It would be better for Rodril not to be involved with us, so we can’t be openly involved, but…”
Alea shrugged. Even though they were dealing with an entire kingdom, there wasn’t a trace of fear in them.
They couldn’t openly engage in a conflict with Veneta, but rescuing a hostage seemed feasible. If they could sneak into Veneta and extract Ubert , that would be enough.
They had navigated the Forest of Roots, evading the eyes of terrifying demonic beasts. Evading human eyes to achieve their objective didn’t seem like an insurmountable task.
“The situation isn’t so bad.”
Asuka muttered nonchalantly.
“At least they haven’t sent his wrist yet.”
“And even if they did, we could reattach it.”
Alea responded just as calmly. With the Spirit Mage Rodril present, Veneta wouldn’t think they couldn’t heal such a wound.
However, sending a gruesome wrist would be a clear declaration of war. Veneta wouldn’t want to offend Greencana and jeopardize the negotiations, so they likely stopped at a reasonable point.
Asuka said with a sigh,
““Why does nothing ever go smoothly? We get out of one mess, and another crops up. Sian, you didn’t call us here on purpose to use us, did you?”
“No way! If I did, I would have left you out! You’re the least helpful!”
“What are you talking about? You were the one relaxing and goofing off in Forest of Roots!”
Charlotte, who had actually been the most relaxed, cleared her throat awkwardly and quickly changed the subject.
“Regardless, Veneta will soon present their demands. They’re waiting for us to make the first contact. Holding a hostage is their way of forcing us into that position.”
Sian frowned.
“What would Veneta want from Greencana? It can’t be just money.”
“Could it be the power of the spirit mage?”
