Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 333 (Part 1):
“It’s been a while. Have you been well?”
Helmut, lowering his sword, stared at the man who had discreetly approached him.
Strictly speaking, they weren’t particularly close or familiar with each other.
Though their first meeting had been unique, they hadn’t encountered each other since except when making contact for information.
However, Talon’s impression had been powerful enough to be etched in Helmut’s memory.
“Helmut.”
Only when his name left Talon’s lips did Helmut finally respond.
“I don’t think we’re on terms to exchange such greetings.”
“Is this current appearance magic? Like when you were in Basor? If Teresa Fidelis couldn’t notice, it would have been difficult for me to notice too. Four years is more than enough time for someone to rot away and vanish.”
“Are you disappointed that I didn’t rot away and disappear?”
“No, I’m just disappointed I can’t see your original appearance after growing up due to magic.”
It was a somewhat strange response that made him feel odd. It sounded like something Ethan Kudrow would say. Talon continued.
“You still have one piece of information left.”
“I know.”
“I thought you’d forgotten. Or perhaps mistakenly believed you’d used all three. It’s been four years since you requested the second piece of information.”
“I suppose I had no information I wanted to know during those four years.”
That was true. Having been betrayed and abandoned in the Forest of Roots, what else would he want to know? It’s not like Talon knew how to get out of the Forest of Roots anyway.
“I see it differently.”
A peculiar light flickered in Talon’s eyes.
“Perhaps you were in a situation where you couldn’t ask me anything during those four years.”
Instead of denying it, Helmut responded.
“There wasn’t anything I wanted to know. But now I do have something to ask.”
“I’ll answer. Since you still have one left. But before that…”
Talon turned his head and pointed in a direction.
“A certain distinguished individual is waiting. I’d like you to follow me.”
“Fine.”
Helmut agreed readily. The reason was simple. He intended to destroy whatever they had prepared.
Besides, Rodril, Alea, and Elaga were nearby. Whatever tricks they might try wouldn’t work.
“Meow?”
As they left the training ground following Talon, suddenly a white cat appeared. It was Elaga.
He tilted his head at Talon and Helmut, then secretly sent a message to Helmut in a low voice.
[What’s with this guy? You’re following him so naively. You weakling.]
“…”
Being called weak always felt unpleasant.
Especially when it wasn’t true. Naturally, he couldn’t respond to Elaga with Talon watching.
Elaga kept meowing while following Helmut, who continued walking without stopping.
[Hey, I’m coming too.]
And without waiting for Helmut’s permission, he climbed up his body and settled on his shoulder.
Seeing this, Talon merely made a light comment.
“What an affectionate cat.”
Elaga, who had been called affectionate for the first time in his life, let out a raspy cough, but the cat’s reaction was beyond Talon’s interest.
In any case, carrying the cat, they passed through several checkpoints and soon reached their destination.
It was a spacious room. Rather than a conference room or office, it seemed more like a private space, without a single document on the table.
This was, therefore, an unofficial meeting. As they entered, a man who had been looking out the window with his hands behind his back turned around.
“Welcome.”
Helmut, who hadn’t even greeted him, responded coldly.
“You ignored me earlier?”
Helmut now knew he was the king. Though he wasn’t speaking informally, he wasn’t being particularly respectful either.
“That was a meeting meant for Rodril.”
“Then why did you summon me?”
“Out of curiosity.”
Davis, King of Veneta, looked at Helmut as if observing him.
One thing was certain—the king harbored no goodwill towards Helmut. But it wasn’t outright hostility either; the reason remained unclear.
However, what was certain was that if he had intended to eliminate Helmut, he wouldn’t have summoned him so carelessly.
“Talon must have told you about my skills.”
“Indeed. He said my guard knights wouldn’t be able to protect me.”
‘Yet he called me anyway, which means he knows I won’t strike first, if only because of Rodril.’
“What do you want?”
“I was curious about you as a person.”
“I have no intention of working for anyone.”
Helmut cut to the chase. He had no intention of entertaining offers to become someone’s subordinate.
Even Darien, who was from Basor, became the Knight Commander in Basor because of his origins, not because he was the type to serve under someone.
And Helmut was even more so. After all, he was even the son of the Grand Duke of Renosa.
