Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 333 (Part 2):
“I don’t want you to work for me either. One shouldn’t keep subordinates who can’t be controlled.”
“Then why?”
“How much do you know about me?”
Helmut briefly considered why he should even engage in this conversation.
But to have a smooth conversation with Talon, he needed to finish this dialogue with the king first.
After all, the king was essentially Talon’s superior.
Elaga was already yawning widely beside him.
“One year ago, you won the succession war and ascended the throne. Originally, you were the prince furthest from the line of succession. I hear you have a reputation for being clever and capable.”
“Seems like public opinion of me is better than I thought. Despite killing my siblings to claim the throne.”
“Victory often comes with sacrifices.”
The king’s expression changed instantly.
“No, I never desired the throne. But I had no choice—I did it to survive.”
No matter how marginalized a prince might be, they can’t avoid becoming a target when the succession war intensifies.
Especially someone like Davis, a prince with excellent qualities, would naturally catch everyone’s eye.
The throne wasn’t a matter of wanting it or not for him.
It was simply a fate imposed on him for being born of royal blood.
However, he lacked power. Though there were nobles who secretly supported him, that alone wasn’t enough.
Lacking a strong faction, he’d had no choice but to rely on Teresa Fidelis. She had helped him claim the throne.
Teresa thought she had chosen Davis, but it was Davis who had made her choose him.
“You probably don’t know how special Teresa Fidelis is to me.”
One could fall in love with a woman who helped in the most difficult times.
Helmut, even before Alea came to save him, and even during his academy days, could understand this.
However, at the next words,
“So you should understand why I dislike you.”
Helmut was momentarily speechless. Davis’s eyes were cold.
Then it clicked—his dislike for Alea and for Helmut shared the same source: Teresa. Yet neither issue had anything to do with Helmut’s own intentions or will.
“Meow.”
Elaga’s eyes sparkled. This was turning into an intriguing tale. Helmut, meanwhile, was flustered by the sudden entanglement in what seemed to be a love triangle.
To the point where he hadn’t been this shaken in recent memory.
Helmut tried to explain.
“…I have no relationship with her. If anything, we were merely senior and junior at the academy.”
“Talon tells a different story. He says there were rumors about you and her during your academy days.”
“I don’t know about any rumors, but there was nothing between us, and I was seeing someone else.”
Helmut had enough sense to know he shouldn’t mention that Teresa had pursued him.
“But it seems Teresa didn’t think that way.”
If it had been Asuka, he would have already caused a scene. Helmut was at a loss for words.
“When I visited the training ground, she also appeared. I doubt it was a coincidence.”
Davis’s gaze was intense. As if he might burn Helmut alive.
Helmut had committed no crime other than existing at this point. Being handsome, perhaps, was the only fault he could claim.
“What did she say to you?”
Telling the truth straightforwardly might make it seem like there had been something more between them. In any case, Helmut didn’t want to make an enemy of the King of Veneta, whom he couldn’t kill right now.
“She has no feelings for me, and was merely curious about why I was here. She said she would investigate me if necessary for Veneta’s sake. That’s all.”
Helmut quickly added:
“I’ll be leaving soon anyway.”
Once he left with Rodril, there would be no further issues.
However, naturally, this wasn’t the only reason why the King of Veneta had summoned him.
The king slowly opened his mouth.
“I’m also curious—why would a descendant of Renosa appear in my kingdom?”
Helmut’s expression changed the moment he understood the implication. His hand instinctively reached for his sword.
The king spoke with certainty, and Helmut didn’t know whether he was truly certain or not.
What mattered was that Helmut had shown a reaction to those words.
“The prodigy swordsman who boasted the highest skill at merely fifteen years old at Greta Academy. Disappeared from Renosa, missing for four years. And now reappears in our Kingdom of Veneta.”
The king’s eyes gleamed coldly.
“Wouldn’t it be stranger if I, as king, wasn’t curious about what purpose you had in entering my territory? Especially if you’re of Renosa’s hidden bloodline.”
