Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 344 (Part 2):
“You came… to meet me?”
“Don’t misunderstand. It’s not like I planned to meet you in a place like this. It’s just that looking for you led me here.”
Alea explained. Luke Yeager stared intently at her hooded face before asking Helmut,
“Who is she?”
“My girlfriend.”
Luke Yeager jerked in surprise. He looked at Helmut, as if unable to believe it.
“You have a girlfriend?”
“Is that a problem?”
“…No, nothing.”
He’d been a bit worried when he heard Helmut had disappeared, but it seemed he’d been doing just fine.
Certainly better than spending his days constantly battling demonic beasts in the desert.
Just as Luke Yeager was about to speak , he noticed the Palma Knights rushing in from the distance.
They had fallen quite behind, so they only now arrived on the scene.
They found the fallen demonic beast, Helmut, and Alea, and approached warily, forming a defensive posture.
“Commander? What happened here? Did you defeat that demonic beast by yourself?”
The Palma Knights asked, having finally arrived. Just as Luke Yeager opened his mouth to respond, Helmut cut in.
“I happened to be passing by and drew its attention, and then he took it down.”
In a casual tone, Helmut gave the credit to Luke Yeager. Luke Yeager immediately denied it, his expression saying ‘When did that happen?’
“No, he’s the one who defeated it.”
“You don’t even know how to accept credit when it’s given.”
“I am the Commander of the Palma Knights and a knight who knows honor. I cannot lie.”
Before becoming Commander, Luke Yeager had followed Helmut’s lead, even taking credit for defeating the Red Scorpion. But now it was different.
Luke Yeager’s gaze was firm, and Helmut interpreted it in his own way.
‘Right, he has no need to climb any higher anyway.’
It’s not like he was going to become king, so the Commander of the Palma Knights had nothing more to prove.
“Who is this person that managed to defeat such a demonic beast?”
“Is the one next to him a mage?”
Such skilled individuals suddenly appearing in the desert was highly suspicious.
But it was also true they had killed the demonic beast the Palma Knights had been pursuing. Luke Yeager vouched for them.
The Palma Knights hesitated, unsure how to react.
Helmut took a step closer to Luke Yeager and spoke.
“Then shall we go?”
“Go? Where?”
“You should take me to the royal capital. As the one who contributed to slaying the demonic beast.”
His dark eyes hinted: you’re not going to make me leave empty-handed, are you?
Luke Yeager nodded reflexively.
“Ah, right. We should do that.”
Subtle, or maybe not, Helmut was still good at getting people to do what he wanted. Luke Yeager turned to the Palma Knights and said,
“I know him, so there’s no need to worry. They’ve perfectly dealt with the demonic beast’s core. He has rendered distinguished service, so we must bring him to the royal capital and reward him.”
“Yes, Commander.”
The Palma Knights obeyed without complaint. Luke Yeager decided to return immediately with Helmut and a few knights.
The remaining Palma Knights would summon troops from a nearby city to handle the demonic beast’s corpse.
As Helmut approached Luke Yeager, he whispered,
“Ah, keep it a secret.”
Luke Yeager immediately understood what he meant. The talking cat and bird.
With a conflicted expression, Luke Yeager nodded.
“For now.”
“I’ll explain later. I have things to tell you anyway.”
Luke Yeager sized Helmut up and down from up close.
He was different from before. After four years, it was a wonder Luke even recognized him, he had changed so much.
Back then, Helmut—no, Hyde—had been just a boy. Now he was a grown young man.
But more than that, Luke Yeager sensed something else clearly.
“You’ve grown stronger.”
“Yeah, so have you. Though not as much as I have.”
“Your attitude, on the other hand, hasn’t changed at all.”
Luke Yeager laughed heartily. Finally relaxing, he reached out and patted Helmut’s head.
Helmut flinched unconsciously. It was a gesture both unfamiliar and friendly.
With his characteristic bright smile, Luke Yeager said,
“Good to see you, Helmut. Though I’m not sure if I’ll still feel that way after I hear your story.”
Would he still feel glad to see Helmut once he heard everything?
Helmut thought, ‘Probably not.’ After becoming Commander, the simple-minded Luke Yeager must have changed somewhat.
Meanwhile, Elaga and Igrelle were chattering noisily beside them.
[That guy is looking down on you too. Just how weak did you act in the human world to be treated like this?]
[Indeed, patting one’s head is, in human custom, a gesture from an adult to a child. In other words, from the strong to the weak.]
[So that’s how it is.]
Helmut took their annoying chatter in stride. He could now handle it.
Alea kept her composure amid the double chorus of complaints and followed alongside Helmut.
Her mind was entirely occupied with how to use the invaluable demonic beast’s core they had secured.
“Let’s go.”
At Luke Yeager’s suggestion, they moved along with the Palma Knights, heading straight for the royal capital of Basor.
