Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 37 (Part 1):
“Hey! Paul, Max!”
“Where are you going!”
“To scatter?”
Members of the Tariq Mercenary Corps quickly realized the situation and felt a sense of betrayal and a distant despair.
This time, Paul and Max were not abandoning the Pace Mercenary Corps but everyone else. All for their own survival!
Was this the behavior expected of second-rank mercenaries leading a mercenary corps?
Miles, who was looking outside through the bars of a securely locked carriage window, turned pale.
“Max, Paul, you bastards!”
The sight of the two breaking through the encroaching demonic beasts and making their escape was clear.
Especially Paul, who had not hesitated to abandon the Pace Mercenary Corps to save himself, leaving Miles uneasy all day.
Miles, a calculative merchant, was not heartless to the point of being cold-blooded.
But why hadn’t he realized? Anyone willing to abandon someone could also abandon their client!
“Mr. Miles, what do we do now?”
“They’re abandoning us, aren’t they?”
“Are we going to die now?”
Besides Miles, three other trading company members were in the carriage.
Miles sighed inwardly and closed his eyes. It was all his fault.
Hiring the Tariq Mercenary Corps, abandoning the Pace Mercenary Corps, even deciding to enter this forest in the first place.
‘Good Lord, Almighty.’
He clasped his hands and began to pray. As an old man who knew not the sword, that was all he could do.
Immediately after Paul and Max chose to flee, the Tariq Mercenary Corps crumbled completely.
With the second-rank mercenaries who were supposed to lead the fight running away, the morale of the remaining members couldn’t possibly stay intact.
Trust in each other was lost, and rather than trying to fight in formation, they scrambled for their own survival.
Members of the Tariq Mercenary Corps either died while fleeing or fell one by one in resignation.
There were those who stood their ground against the demonic beasts until the end, but they were overwhelmed and torn apart.
The situation was gradually being resolved through the death of the mercenaries. Only the carriage and horses remained.
Even while feasting on humans, the demonic beasts did not approach that area. It seemed right to target where that strong, dark human was absent.
A monkey-like demonic beast stepped forward with satisfaction.
-Kieeee.
It was curious why humans were so desperate to protect this large box.
A transparent window was barred with iron. As it approached, it felt a fearful gaze from inside.
So, there were humans inside! Realizing this, the monkey demonic beast raised its voice.
-Kieeeeeek!
A strike with its hand shook the carriage as if it were hit by an earthquake, denting it severely. A few more hits and it would crumble like an old box.
-Hihihih!
The previously unaware horse cried out long.
The monkey demonic beast grabbed the horse, yanking it out from its saddle, not merely removing it but forcibly extracting it.
The horse, with broken bones, could not resist and died instantly.
The monkey demonic beast had tasted a horse’s heart before. It was a delicacy, but not as delicious as the heart of a human imbued with Vis.
-Kiee.
Tossing the horse’s corpse to its minions like throwing a dog or cat, the monkey demonic beast tipped the carriage over.
“Ugh!”
“Keugh!”
Groans came from inside as they piled up in one place.
Pleased, the monkey demonic beast tore off the carriage’s top.
Crack, crick-crack!
Eating one at a time would also be a delicacy. Though it took some effort, this hunt was successful.
Finally feeling fully satisfied, the monkey demonic beast saw the humans inside, pale and trembling.
The sight of their fear-filled faces whetted its appetite. It quickly reached in and pulled out a human whole.
“Aaaaah!”
The human screamed and flailed madly. The flesh was softer than that of the mercenaries, appearing more tender.
The monkey demonic beast grinned, ripping off the human’s arm.
“Kuuuuuk!”
The human, with its arm torn off, rolled its eyes back in convulsion. After throwing the arm to its minions, the monkey demonic beast gulped down the pouring blood.
The blood tasted different from that of the humans armed with swords. It was richer, more savory. The beast quenched its thirst with the rich, savory stream of blood.
Slurp. The blood dripping down the demonic beast’s chin flowed back into the overturned box.
The remaining humans were out of their minds with terror. They couldn’t even faint.
Unable to pray, their mouths frozen in fear. It was a horrific sight, unimaginable even in a nightmare.
“Oh, please.”
After sucking blood from the torn limb, the monkey demonic beast threw the corpse aside and reached back into the carriage.
This time, the humans were scattered, clinging to the carriage walls, making it hard to grab them.
These frail humans were desperately fighting for their lives in this small space, but all that awaited them was death.
