A being tainted by demonic energy, piercing a sacred barrier head-on?

His barrier, which had never been breached before!

Agato faltered. His wavering resolve shook his mental fortitude. And the moment that tremor affected his barrier—

*Kwachang!*

The barrier shattered, and the shockwave forced Agato to cough up blood.

“Kraagh!”

But before he could even groan from the internal injury, Helmut’s sword plunged deep into his abdomen.

*Thud!*

Whether the initial pain or the fatal wound hurt more, Agato couldn’t tell.

All he felt was the chilling presence of the sword tearing through his insides.

“Krrgh!”

The high priest trembled violently, experiencing excruciating pain for the first time in his life. With his abdomen pierced, he couldn’t even thrash about.

Hot blood gushed forth, soaking everything around him. He would bleed out and die like this.

Yet, Helmut didn’t finish him off. Compared to the suffering Darien had endured, this was trivial.

He gazed down at the dying high priest with a cold, aloof expression.

“The Temple failed to kill me four years ago, and it fails again now. Look. This is Lumen’s will.”

If the absolute will of a god granted victory to the one who desired it, then Lumen’s will had already chosen the victor’s name.

And that name was Helmut, standing right here.

A flicker of fury flared in Agato’s eyes.

“You vile… creature. How dare… someone like you speak of Lumen’s will?”

“By your own logic. I passed through a sacred barrier twice. The second time, Lumen saw me. I’ve seen your god closer than anyone.”

Helmut continued calmly, addressing the panting, struggling Agato.

“So, yeah, I have every right to say it.”

Had Lumen, the divine being, not foreseen this moment when Helmut would turn his blade against the god’s followers?

But no one was there to answer Helmut’s question.

Agato fell silent. A resolute conviction settled on his ashen face.

Yet, he didnDisseminated’t beg for his life. His gaze, serene in the face of death, stirred an odd feeling in Helmut.

With his sword still raised, Helmut spoke.

“High Priest, what is your name?”

The moment the question left his lips—a chill shot down his spine. A tremendous storm of holy power erupted from behind him.

*KwaBOOM!*

Struck squarely in the back, Helmut was sent flying and crashed into the ground.

The assailant, confirming Helmut’s motionless form, strode toward Agato.

“High Priest Agato, are you alive?”

The attacker swiftly pulled the sword from Agato’s body and poured healing magic into him. Astonishingly, Agato’s wounds began to close.

Light returned to his hazy eyes. Staring at the unexpected figure with astonishment, Agato asked,

“Paolo, why have you returned? What about the others?”

“All have returned. I came back to seize the chance to kill him. I had a useful sacred artifact.”

High Priest Paolo held up an object around his neck. A necklace bearing Lumen’s emblem gleamed in his grip—a sacred artifact that concealed one’s presence.

The area was saturated with holy power from earlier spells, allowing him to bide his time perfectly, unnoticed.

Paolo had waited coldly, patiently, for the perfect moment to strike the vile creature. This was the result.

Glancing briefly at the fallen Helmut, he turned back to Agato.

“Enemies will swarm soon. We must leave.”

Grasping Paolo’s hand and rising, Agato said with a grave expression,

“The Temple is in danger, isn’t it? You should have returned.”

“If I had, you would be dead. Isn’t this better—”

At that moment, Agato thought he saw a white line being drawn. No, was it ashen gray?

*Swish!*

With a chilling sound, Paolo’s head was severed clean.

Time seemed to slow. Agato watched as Paolo’s head, detached from his body, tilted in midair, his lips still moving.

His face was calm, as if unaware of what had befallen him. He met death without realizing it.

A bizarre and terrifying sight. Then, the head fell to the ground.

*Thud!*

*Tududu.*

With a light thud, the rolling head came to a stop, trembling as if still alive.

The headless body collapsed, spraying blood like a fountain over Agato’s face and body as he held Paolo’s hand. The blood was hot.

Seeing the severed stump, drenched in blood, was a dizzying, horrific experience.

Helmut, who had somehow approached from behind and returned Paolo’s attack in kind, looked like a demon king.

Dark as the abyss, ruthlessly cruel. He shook the blood from his sword and spat out,

“You lied. You’re not the last one who sent Darien to the Forest of Roots. It was him.”

His voice dripped with displeasure, cold and indifferent to the fact that he had just slain a high priest.

“Ah… Aah!”

A delayed groan burst from Agato’s lips. Uncontrollable emotions surged within him. A high priest had been killed before his eyes—trying to save him!

“ARRGH!”

Agato screamed, summoning his holy power.

But the earlier healing had only mended his external wounds. He was in no condition to wield sacred magic.

A high priest unable to use sacred magic was utterly powerless.

“How noisy.”

Helmut sheathed his sword and swung it lightly, still in its scabbard.

*Thwack!*

Struck on the head, the high priest collapsed to the ground. Helmut asked coldly,

“Did you want a glorious death?”

To fight and die for Lumen, to meet death through a holy war—that was deemed a noble end.

“Unfortunately, that won’t happen.”

Helmut’s eyes gleamed coldly. He wouldn’t grant death to someone who desired it.

He intended to drag this man like a dog, treating him as a captive. If necessary, he would hang him alive on the city walls to make a clear statement to the Temple.

Their most noble figure had been captured, proof of their defeat!

The Temple would never again dare to encroach upon Renosa, where he stood! Never again would they deny his existence!

High Priest Agato could no longer resist. He had to accept the fate awaiting him. As a defeated man.
