A menacing growl escaped Elaga’s maw.

*Grrrrrr.*

His eyes, shrouded in abyssal demonic energy, were pitch black.

Something was stirring within him. Anger. Bloodlust. Negative emotions.

The unleashed demonic energy was driving his consciousness toward madness, from stability to instability.

Just as Helmut had once been overtaken by the Seed of Darkness.

But in Elaga’s case, it was subtler, more natural. Like kindling fueling ignited aggression.

The darkness was creeping in, enveloping him. The moment it fully seized him, Elaga would be consumed by it.

The humans, still clinging to his back and miraculously not thrown off, only snapped out of their daze belatedly.

Even though Elaga’s demonic energy wasn’t directed at them, its mere presence was threatening.

Fortunately, Sian was using the earth spirit’s power to block the demonic energy as a first line of defense.

High Priestess Levina, maintaining a secondary barrier to protect the group, suppressed the urge to unleash an attack on Elaga.

Levant, wielder of the holy sword, was in the same position. Enduring and protecting themselves was all they could do.

When Elaga finally calmed, they regained their senses.

“Damn it, what the hell was that, Elaga?”

Elaga didn’t seem to hear Asuka’s call.

“You blasted leopard! Snap out of it, Elaga!”

Asuka shouted at the top of his lungs.

But the demonic energy emanating from Elaga’s body, far from subsiding, continued to rise like acrid smoke.

He didn’t seem to comprehend words. This was dangerous.

Sian shouted as if screaming.

“Elaga! Rosetta! Rosetta!”

The problem was getting the Rosetta pill into the ferocious Elaga’s mouth.

But it didn’t necessarily have to be done by a human.

“Go! Wind spirit!”

The wind spirit hesitated. But it had no choice but to obey Sian’s command.

Carrying the Rosetta pill, the wind spirit threw itself into Elaga’s mouth.

Elaga happened to have his mouth slightly open at that moment.

Sensing something enter, Elaga instinctively chewed it aggressively.

His mind cleared in an instant.

As reason returned, the demonic energy radiating from Elaga’s body dissipated.

Elaga, who had been suppressing his demonic energy out of consideration for the humans around him, found it more natural to keep it restrained.

[What just happened? Did I take down that demonic beast?]

Elaga, now lucid, looked around.

Having escaped the crisis on instinct, he had no idea what had transpired.

Elaga’s demonic nature was powerful. Any attempt to forcibly dominate him would provoke fierce resistance.

Demonic energy was the power of the Demon King. Through it, the Demon King had tried to control Elaga.

But Sian’s quick thinking had prevented it.

The humans collectively let out sighs of relief.

Elaga suddenly became aware of their presence on his back.

[Hey, you lot okay?]

“We’re okay *now*. But we almost weren’t.”

Sian spoke with a voice that sounded like he’d aged ten years.

But Elaga wasn’t really listening. He pressed down on the debris of plants and rocks with his forepaw.

[What a bizarre attack. To think such a creature existed. Not bad for a bunch of weeds.]

The Forest of Roots, thousands of years old, was vast and deep. It made sense that there were demonic beasts even Elaga didn’t know about.

While the rulers of the domains in the Forest of Roots were animals, the forest itself was composed of plants like these.

The shattered plant fragments were still twitching slightly.

Unless its roots were completely uprooted, it couldn’t be fully eradicated.

But since they were just passing through, Elaga had no intention of wasting time on that.

The foolish greed of trying to make him prey was audacious, though.

‘It was certainly unique.’

Elaga strode forward, passing through the area. The crunching debris underfoot wasn’t ideal for running.

The scent of Rosetta wafted gently, enveloping Elaga’s entire body.

Levina, in her heightened alertness, had even pulled out the incense.

“Elaga, are you really back to your senses?”

Asuka asked, prompting Elaga to tilt his head.

[What’s wrong with my senses?]

“You don’t remember? Just moments ago, you were spewing demonic energy like you’d lost your mind, and you didn’t even hear us!”

Because of that, the four humans on his back had felt a fleeting sense of terror.

[Who lost their mind? Huh? But why does my mouth taste like Rosetta? When did I eat that?]

Elaga replied nonchalantly, much to their frustration.

“Let’s get off. We’ll walk.”

Asuka jumped down first, and the others hurriedly followed suit.

Whether they moved quickly or not, they could no longer bear riding on Elaga’s back out of sheer anxiety.

Elaga furrowed his brow.

[What are you doing? Weren’t we in a hurry? I went out of my way to carry you.]

“Do you realize you almost slaughtered all four of us just now?”

Sian bluntly reminded him.

He summoned the light spirit to project a vivid image of the recent events.

Seeing it, Elaga jolted in shock.

[What? When did I do that? I don’t remember any of it.]

“Not even being aware of it makes it more dangerous.”

Asuka crossed his arms.

Igrelle, at least, was aware when it was being dominated by the Demon King.

But Elaga seemed completely oblivious, as if that moment had been wiped clean from his memory.

Levina spoke with a grave expression.

“Seeing as you’ve come to your senses, it seems Rosetta is still effective. But it’s still unsettling. If you’re not even aware of it, you can’t resist it either.”

“Couldn’t sacred magic snap you out of it?”

Asuka responded earnestly, then added, “Or maybe a stab from the holy sword.”
