Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 482 (Part 1):
“Heike!”
Alea urgently cried out toward the dungeon entrance that had suddenly closed.
It was Heike who had shut the door.
She couldn’t believe it. When had she ever been so self-sacrificing?
But in the next moment, the entire dungeon shook violently.
Rumble!
Even though Heike had blocked it once, the aftermath of the collapse outside was reaching in.
As the dungeon’s master, Alea had to pour all her strength into sustaining it.
Fortunately, she didn’t have to hold out alone for long. Because Sian had woken up.
“……Huh? What happened.”
As he opened his eyes and exerted his power, the dungeon quickly stabilized. Only then could everyone finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Alea slumped down, staring at the floor. She had a premonition of Heike’s fate.
This time, it was Helmut who comforted her. His hand rested on Alea’s shoulder.
Their eyes met. The two shared an unspoken empathy.
Helmut had lost Elaga, and Alea had lost Heike. Even though they had achieved the most difficult goal, the sacrifices they had to make weighed heavily on their hearts.
The others, sensing the situation, had fallen silent, but soon recovered the mood.
The straightforward and optimistic Asuka and Luke Yeager were the ones to do so.
After all, they had accomplished their objective. They had defeated the Demon King and saved the world.
“We’re heroes now, huh.”
Sian muttered. Hero Sian—such an unfamiliar title; it was the first time he’d ever worn it.
“Is it really over? Please let it be over.”
Asuka revealed his inner thoughts.
Luke Yeager laughed heartily.
“What if it’s all been a trick up until now, and when we go out, the Demon King pops up like, ta-da! Waiting for us.”
“……It’s a good thing you’re the knight commander.”
To make such a lame and unfunny joke. If he were a low-ranking knight, he’d be living off scraps from glares.
As Asuka shot him a glare, Luke Yeager scratched his head awkwardly.
“It could happen, you know.”
As they started chattering noisily, the dungeon soon became lively.
Having composed herself, Alea spoke coolly.
“The link to the outside world is broken. I need to repair it and lock onto coordinates to open the entrance.”
They would have to open an entrance leading to the human world.
“How long will it take?”
Asuka asked.
“Who knows. I need to recover my mana too……. It’ll take a few days, so rest up and stay in the dungeon for the time being. There’s plenty of food.”
“Oh, I can summon spirits here.”
The spirit of light that Sian summoned twirled and danced, circling in the air. And so, the party’s dungeon exploration began.
“Don’t break anything.”
The dungeon master, who had no intention of inviting them, felt displeased, but soon entered mana recovery.
“Why is this place so nice?”
“Oh, look at this fancy sofa. As expected of Lady Alea.”
“Rich, she’s rich!”
“……Magic sure is amazing.”
Amid the commotion, Helmut was able to step into the private training room prepared for him. He, too, needed to recover his Vis there.
The fight wasn’t over yet. The collapse of the sacred barrier meant that the countless demonic beasts from the Forest of Roots would pour out toward the human world.
He had to recover quickly and go out to face them.
‘The barrier should hold up fine.’
It would hold for a little while. That uncertainty made the situation feel urgent.
Helmut silently entered his Vis training method.
At the barrier, a grueling battle was unfolding. A battlefield where life and death hung in the balance.
Everyone there was experiencing war against demonic beasts for the first time in their lives.
This wasn’t mere subjugation or hunting. It was war, plain and simple.
Kyaaak! Kiyoooo!
The howls of the demonic beasts charging toward the barrier tore at eardrums.
The demonic beasts of the Forest of Roots, with forms and sizes so ferocious they made one’s blood run cold!
Their power was immense; even a graze from their claws could leave one on the brink of death.
“Oh! My god, look at that size!”
“Over there! It jumped onto the barrier!”
“Stop it! We can’t let it breach!”
A week after the sacred barrier collapsed, the attacks began.
At first, they appeared one by one, wandering around before charging at the barrier and falling. But soon, their numbers exploded.
They didn’t coordinate attacks, but just their individual charges were threatening enough.
Each one was a demonic beast unlike any seen before. If such a beast appeared in the human world, the entire area would be declared a danger zone.
The demonic energy they emitted was corroding the barrier.
Mages and priests were constantly repairing it, but there were too many.
The ones Helmut’s party had slain were just the tip of the iceberg.
The barrier was sturdy, but the onslaught of demonic beasts was beyond imagination.
Eventually, they found weaknesses in the solid barrier. They drove in their claws and climbed up, letting out long roars.
Kwaaaang!
The scent of delectable human flesh wafted from beyond.
They could just ignore the pesky humans up here.
“It’s climbing up again! Block its entry first!”
“No, take that one down first!”
“Knock it off the barrier!”
A demonic beast that had climbed onto the barrier bit into a knight’s head and crunched it messily.
Brains and blood splattered gruesomely across the barrier.
But sacred magic fell upon the beast engrossed in human flesh.
Kyaoooo!
It spewed black smoke and tumbled down the barrier.
Someone said in disgust.
“Now that it’s tasted human flesh, it’ll come at us even more aggressively.”
They recovered the body during a brief lull in the assault.
The stench of blood would only provoke the demonic beasts more. Even the closest comrades couldn’t afford to grieve.
Everyone’s eyes were bloodshot.
