Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 70 (Part 2):
“Look at it! It’s mentally shocked. Dark spirits are delicate in heart. If you keep it captured forcibly, it might just fade away in agony. That’s why mages have never been able to achieve results with spirits.”
It might be an exaggeration. What was certain was that, due to Helmut’s vis-inflicted wounds, the creature’s energy or mass had significantly decreased. Now bound by the magic, it barely reacted, almost as if it had given up on life.
Alea thought it over. Sian was right. Spirits are tricky to handle. The reason proper research hadn’t been conducted was exactly that. It’s unclear how this creature appeared in Greta Academy, but now that it has, it can’t be wasted.
“Fine, I can hand it over to you. But it won’t be for free. There has to be compensation for me.”
Then, glancing at Helmut, she continued,
“I don’t need money. Tell me what you can offer me.”
Up until now, Sian, the only spirit mage in Baden, had been uncooperative. This was an opportunity to make him cooperate, and she couldn’t let it slip. Alea’s eyes sparkled. Quick-witted Sian knew too well what she wanted. He sighed deeply and said,
“I’ll actively cooperate with your magic research.”
He added one condition,
“But remember, spirits are my friends, not tools. You can’t use methods that cause them pain.”
“Agreed.”
Alea nodded. Helmut interjected,
“Aren’t you going to ask for a mage’s oath?”
How can you trust him? But Sian looked serious,
“Hey, isn’t that a bit too much? Do I really need to take a mage’s oath?”
“That’s a bit…”
Alea also seemed hesitant. Helmut thought it was a common practice since the archmage Antiole had willingly taken the oath, but apparently not.
“Sian will keep his promise. I’ll make sure of it.”
Alea’s gaze was firm. And judging by her temperament, breaking the promise wouldn’t go unnoticed. Sian reluctantly nodded.
“Then, I’ll take care of it now.”
Approaching the bound dark spirit, a spark of zeal lit up in Sian’s eyes. It was the look of a mage. Sympathy is one thing, but his intention to find this spirit was not just out of affection for spirits. As Sian approached, the dark spirit showed wariness and wriggled.
“Shh, be nice? Just stay still. It’s okay.”
A magical circle, like a tattoo, appeared on Sian’s palm. The brightly shining white magical circle slowly moved toward the dark spirit. The moment the magical circle touched the dark spirit, the black form was sucked into it without resistance. Sian grumbled after securing the dark spirit,
“Helmut, because you used Vis to injure it, it’s weak.”
Alea pointed out,
“Isn’t that good for you? You got a new spirit without exerting any power.”
“Creatures obtained this way have low affinity. It won’t listen to me well.”
“That’s for you to deal with.”
“Huh? But wait. Isn’t it unusual for a swordsman your age to materialize Vis?”
Suddenly, he looked at Helmut. Mages don’t know much about swordsmen, and swordsmen don’t know much about mages. But could a boy who just turned fifteen cut through a powerful spirit with Vis?
“That’s not common.”
Alea firmly denied. However, she didn’t seem to care much. Alea hadn’t been particularly surprised by Helmut’s abilities from the start. Perhaps being a genius herself, she easily accepts the possibility of someone else being a genius.
“Now that I think about it, in the second year of the academy’s swordsmanship department, there’s a commoner called a genius. I’m curious how you’ll get along with him.”
Sian smirked.
“By the way, that guy’s nickname is ‘Crazy Dog’. Alea, you have a funny nickname too, don’t you?”
“What is it?”
Helmut, unconcerned about discussing it in front of the person involved, asked. Sian, with a smile full of anticipation, responded as if he had been waiting for this moment,
“Cult leader.”
“Shut up!”
As Alea snapped irritably, Sian pretended not to notice and took the lead. It was as if he had been part of the group from the start with his easy-going attitude.
“Come on, let’s go. We need to wrap up the request.”
They happily left the training ground. Soon, 3,000 marks would be coming in. That was the most welcome news for Helmut.
“We’ve resolved it.”
The matter was concluded by showing the spirit to the academy’s administrative staff and Ethan Kudrow, who had stayed late. Ethan looked surprised. In his decades at Greta Academy, he had never encountered such a situation.
“So there really was a spirit hiding in the training ground.”
The academy staff tilted their head,
“But why did the spirit appear in the academy?”
“It’s uncommon, but occasionally, spirits reveal themselves to the world irregularly. Due to the influence of a failed magic or a twist in the atmosphere, for example. Usually, they appear without meaning and disappear. But the one that appeared this time was exceptionally powerful. A dark spirit, a rare creature. It seems Greta Academy was a suitable habitat for it. It had gained enough strength to wander around on its own.”
The spirit mage’s explanation satisfied them. In truth, they just went along with it since they didn’t understand well.
