Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 71 (Part 1):
Helmut, taking advantage of the moment, went to the mercenary guild late at night with Sian and Alea. Most mercenary guilds operate until dawn because urgent requests come in.
These types of requests require a report to be written. Helmut, far from being accustomed to writing documents, was not even used to writing at all. Alea kept giving unsolicited advice next to him. It seemed she was having fun.
“First, write the investigation process concisely, and there’s no need to talk about me. Just write that we guessed it was a spirit haunting the Greta Academy and found its hideout. The request was concluded by having an academy’s spirit mage secure the spirit. There won’t be any more strange phenomena at the academy. Who the witness is, just write like this.”
“Have you written a mercenary report before?”
Sian asked, interested, and Alea snorted.
“The report format is obvious.”
Upon submitting the report, a mercenary guild clerk, yawning, took it and then rubbed his eyes as if waking from sleep.
“Wow, you solved this request. It was intriguing, but since no one wanted to take it, I wondered who would. A spirit in the world? It was a very unique request.”
Confirming it, Sian showed him the dark spirit. The clerk, slightly frightened by its appearance, which was similar to the descriptions of witnesses, nodded.
“Is it confirmed?”
Helmut’s hand went up to the reception desk. It was a sign that he was asking for the request fee. However, the academy clerk shook his head.
“It’s confirmed. But in the case of such requests, it’s established that no more bizarre entities appear, so it takes some time to be sure. That’s why we don’t pay the request fee right away. Come back in three days.”
Getting paid was a hassle. Helmut scowled and turned away. As they left the mercenary guild, Sian spoke to Helmut.
“So now, we’re friends, right? I’ve helped you.”
Helmut corrected him.
“We’ve helped each other.”
He might not know what a spirit is to a spirit mage, but securing a rare spirit would surely be beneficial for him.
“Then it’s even better, right? Being of help to each other. Ideal for friends! Since our first meeting was so fun, it’ll be interesting moving forward.”
Sian thought as he pleased. But Sian had an affable nature. Despite Alea and Helmut being rather cold, Sian had a way of attaching himself to them, which wasn’t bad. As he said, Sian had been a help to Helmut.
“Alea, you too?”
With a tired expression, Alea waved her hands. Being involved with Helmut was already more than she had expected.
“Not with me. Friends or whatever, do it yourselves.”
“A friend’s friend is a friend.”
Sian replied nonchalantly and extended his hand to Helmut. After a moment of hesitation, Helmut grasped his hand. Even Finn, who was terribly weak and cowardly, claimed to be Helmut’s friend, so what harm could Sian do?
“Wow, you have a firm grip? As expected of the swordsmanship department.”
Sian shook his hand up and down before letting go.
“Let’s get along well. Life in the swordsmanship department can be tough, but if you ever want to talk about it, find me anytime.”
“I won’t need to.”
Helmut cut him off sharply.
“You know that dorm assignments are coming up, right? The freshman dorm building will become the sophomore dorm next year, and so on, so the building stays the same, but roommates and room locations will change. Guys aren’t divided by department, so we might end up in the same room. Well, we can change rooms if we want.”
Do they share rooms? Helmut immediately looked at Alea. It seemed unlike him to share a room with someone.
“Alea has a single room. He boldly requested a single room as a privilege for scoring perfect on the entrance exam from the dean. Will that privilege continue?”
“As long as I maintain my position as the academy’s top student.”
Alea looked at the perennial second-place with a haughty gaze. But Sian didn’t seem to mind and smiled without moving an eyebrow.
“Then you’ll continue to have a single room.”
It seemed like he had already given up. Helmut thought he was someone without ambition.
“Anyway, it’s late. Go in well.”
Sian waved his hand. Alea also nodded her head and turned her back.
“Goodbye.”
A short farewell followed. Helmut parted with them and immediately returned to the Kudrow mansion. It had been a day full of events.
“Should I take another request?”
A few days later, holding the promised 3,000 marks from the mercenary guild, Helmut thought. At this rate, he could become rich quickly. While attending the academy, Helmut planned to slowly search for his parents.
‘Parents are said to be happy when their child earns a lot of money.’
Whether his parents, who knew of Helmut’s dark seed, would readily accept him, it seemed better to go impressively rather than empty-handed.
‘But if they’re nobles, they might be wealthy like Xenia of Zahringen.’
That was not a wealth Helmut could catch up with by doing mercenary work occasionally. His will was broken. Ethan did not want Helmut to take on more requests or train every day in anticipation of the upcoming semester. Making friends with Sian and Alea was seen positively, but filling his day with requests and training was not looked upon favorably. It was the opposite of what typical guardians or parents would nag about.
Helmut had lived too diligently. As if not a single day should be wasted. In the Forest of Roots, he needed to become strong quickly to leave the forest. The life ingrained in him over four years was not easily shaken off.
‘You should rest a bit. It’s going to get busy with the semester, so it wouldn’t be bad to relax now.’
The busy semester was one thing, and a day was not short. Helmut truly did not understand the concept of taking a break at a certain time. Rest was something to be taken during the day’s work, and he was still at an age full of vitality. Academy life did not seem too taxing either. So, curious if there were any good requests, he casually asked the clerk at the reception, but it seemed there were none suitable.
“What should I do…”
While contemplating, Helmut headed towards the Kudrow mansion. Upon his return, the mansion’s butler presented him with a letter.
“It’s from the academy.”
