Helmut: The Forsaken Child - H.F.C Chapter 75 (Part 1):
When he reached out to grab his collar, Helmut swiftly twisted his body and evaded. Erun, who had swung his hand into thin air, clenched it in frustration. Helmut glanced at him and asked, “What are you doing?”
“You tripped while running!”
The onlookers nodded in agreement, muttering, “That’s right.” In this well-maintained training field, falling was a rare occurrence.
“You must be mistaken. You tripped stupidly, and now you’re trying to blame me?”
Helmut responded cheekily. Of course, he had tripped Erun. He kept trying to strike him with his elbow, so he simply returned the favor. What he did was a form of self-defense.
“What did you say? This commoner thinks I’m a pushover!”
Erun swung his hand again and charged at Helmut. However, Helmut skillfully avoided him, causing Erun to repeatedly strike at thin air.
“Are you going to keep running around like a rat?”
“You’re just too slow.”
Helmut kindly pointed out, “With those movements, you won’t catch a real rat.”
It wasn’t so much that he was irritated; it was more like he found it amusing. It was a rare occurrence in the Forest of Roots for a weakling who knew nothing to pick a fight. He had encountered such situations a few times before and had adapted to them.
‘I’m becoming more human, too.’
Helmut marveled at his adaptability.
“Hey!”
Erun, who had been futilely flailing his hands, turned red with anger.
“If it weren’t for this sword, I would have cut you down right now!”
“Erun, what are you doing!”
Sabbat, who was worse than him, called him. He also thought that it was time for the instructor to return.
“Leave that commoner alone! “
Helmut’s voice was loud enough for even those who didn’t know he was a commoner to hear. Erun backed off while still seething. He had realized that Helmut was avoiding his attacks too easily, and it seemed strange.
“Huh? Commoner guy? “You called me?”
At that moment, Asuka, who had just returned to the field, walked over with a pleasant expression. His appearance, which seemed powerless and out of place, made everyone look away, but he wore a fresh smile on his face. Those who knew him began to backpedal. Sabbat clicked his tongue.
“What are you up to now?”
“Me? I’m just a commoner.”
Sabbat yelled at Asuka, sweeping his gaze up and down.
“What’s the deal? How many commoners are there in the Swordsmanship Department?”
Someone tapped Sabbat’s shoulder. It was one of the students who had become more acquainted with him.
“The instructor is coming.”
“Ah, right.”
Sabbat pointed towards Helmut and jeered, “Well, have a good time together, you two commoners.”
When Instructor Alan arrived, the tense atmosphere eased. He distributed one wooden sword to each student.
“From now on, you’ll have sparring and practice with these. If they break, report it to the academy’s administrative office. Don’t lose them, and always have them with you during class.”
The sturdy wooden swords were made of ebony wood. Helmut examined the one he held in his hand. His name was engraved on the handle.
“Since it’s the first day, those who haven’t trained much will need to get used to it. Each of you can train your bodies or practice with the swords. No sparring today!”
“Yes!”
A loud cheer erupted. Instructor Alan’s eyes were now fixed on Asuka, who had been walking behind the Swordsmanship Department students.
“You, Asuka. Have you finished running around the field?”
“Of course.”
In truth, he hadn’t completed a full lap, but everyone was too focused on Helmut to notice how much Asuka had run.
“Alright, for the remaining time, feel free to train! That’s all!”
‘Is it because it’s the first day? Just running around the field?’
He had already heard from Ethan that the first day wouldn’t be anything special, but it felt somewhat anticlimactic. It was his first time attending a class at an educational institution. Helmut had only received private tutoring until now and had never learned something in a group setting with so many people. It was fascinating and different.
‘What kind of training should I do?’
The training ground was spacious, and he could train without colliding with others. Helmut contemplated his options. Everyone was paying attention to the new students, especially him. Even Instructor Alan glanced at Helmut briefly. It wasn’t the place to showcase Darien’s swordsmanship. He could demonstrate basic training or the continent’s common sword techniques. Helmut decided to move to a corner.
That’s when someone approached and struck up a conversation. It was Asuka, the boy with a white face and vibrant blue hair, wearing a smile.
“Hey, you’re a commoner, right?”
“Yeah.”
Helmut confirmed. There was no reason to deny it when the rumors had already spread.
“I’m a commoner too.”
“Is that so?”
Ironically, the two with the fairest skin in the Swordsmanship Department were not of noble descent. It seemed that the saying “You can’t judge a book by its cover” was true.
“Shall we shake hands?”
He extended his hand with a smiling face. Helmut didn’t shake his hand. While not openly hostile, he sensed no goodwill from the other party. Ha! Asuka chuckled.
“At least you’re quick-witted.”
Veins were bulging on his hand, ready to squeeze it painfully if they had shaken hands. Helmut might not have yielded so easily.
He had heard that phrase somewhere before. However, despite sharing the same room with that Area person, they had never clashed. Helmut suddenly remembered a certain memory.
“Oh, you’re that guy.”
“What am I?”
“Crazy dog.”
“Is that so!”
