Hee-jun’s frown deepened.

“That building over there. It’s not that far.”

He pointed to a slightly taller building among the rest.

Calling it “far” was an exaggeration.

“The other platoon’s entry teams are going too. Request sniper support if needed.”

“Y-Yes, sir.”

Hee-jun sighed and called the entry team to gather.

They were going anyway—why complain?

“Entry! Move in!”

“Open the barricade!”

Gun-woo quickly led the squad inside.

Hee-jun approached the barricade, watching his soldiers.

Many of them were on their first mission.

Sure enough, he spotted a rookie huddled behind cover, face pale.

“Hey, don’t panic. Orcs will die if you just keep shooting at them.”

“I-I heard headshots don’t work too well, sir…”

True enough.

Orc hides were notoriously resistant to rifle bullets.

But if everyone focused fire, they would eventually go down.

With support from the heavy weapons team, even more so.

“So, what—are you going to run away?”

“N-No, sir!”

The rookie shouted, full of military discipline.

Hee-jun chuckled.

He hadn’t been much different on his first deployment.

Next to the rookie, a corporal tried to sound tough—even though he was nervous himself.

“Y-Yeah, don’t sweat it, man. Gates usually end without anyone dying.”

Probably meant to be comforting, but the word “dying” made everyone tense up.

Tell someone not to think about an elephant, and what do they think of?

Death wasn’t something you could avoid thinking about.

Especially in the Blue Dragon Battalion—hadn’t they lost an entire platoon just a year ago?

Like the corporal said, Gates “usually” ended without major incidents.

But that also meant sometimes, something went terribly wrong.

Like, for instance, if a monster that shouldn’t appear in an E-rank Gate actually did…

Hee-jun smacked the corporal’s helmet with a decent amount of force.

“Don’t talk nonsense, Corporal Kim. Nothing’s going to happen.”

“Y-Yes, sir! Sorry, sir!”

Hee-jun stared ahead, where nothing had yet moved. No sound. No signs.

‘Damn it… Why do I feel so uneasy?’

Gun-woo was leading a team of fifteen toward the Myeongseong Building.

Along the way, they linked up with entry squads from 1st and 2nd Platoons.

Five from each squad.

Gun-woo was the senior-most among them, so he continued giving commands.

Clench—!

The forward scout raised his fist.

Everyone hugged the walls and focused on hand signals.

Up ahead—three Orcs.

The entry teams had enough firepower to handle that.

But their faces were grim.

Until now, they had managed to avoid fighting.

But this path couldn’t be bypassed—they had no choice but to engage.

And once gunfire started, nearby Orcs would likely rush in.

They had hoped to avoid contact until after getting the civilians out.

Everyone looked to Gun-woo.

‘Well, we’ve been lucky to get this far without a fight.’

Thinking about it now, it was oddly fortunate.

Usually at this range, they’d already have fought several skirmishes.

They just had to end it quickly and get out.

Gulp—

Gun-woo swallowed hard and issued orders.

“1st Platoon, suppression fire. 2nd Platoon, load grenades.”

“Yes, sir.”

And then the firefight began.

Tat-tat-tat-tat—!!

The enhanced Special Forces rounds, with greater stopping power, rained down on the Orcs.

GROOOARR—!

The Orcs tried to charge, but the bullets hitting their bodies didn’t allow it.

At first, the bullets bounced off their hides—but after ten, twenty rounds, they began to pierce through.

One magazine emptied—

“Launch grenades!”

Thunk—!

Two grenade launchers from 2nd Platoon fired simultaneously.

BOOOOOM——!!

A bit excessive for three already-wounded Orcs, but safety came first.

Gun-woo confirmed the kills and lit up with relief.

He could see the building labeled Myeongseong just ahead.

And in a window on about the 10th floor—

“Help us! Orcs are right in front! The door’s breaking!”

“Save us!”

Civilians were frantically calling out.

Gun-woo waved his arm and shouted.

“We’re here! Move in! 3rd Platoon will cover—1st and 2nd go inside!”

“Entry! Entry!”

Ten Special Forces members charged into the building.

The Myeongseong Building had a unique structure.

You could see the stairs and long hallways through large glass panels.

From outside, you could even watch the Special Forces sprint through it.

‘That’s it! Almost there!’

They had already memorized the exit route.

There were a few Orcs inside, but they’d handle it.

As long as they got back out before more arrived—it was over.

But then—

Sergeant Park! Orc cluster incoming!

A panicked voice crackled over the radio.

Of course there were Orcs!

Gun-woo clicked his tongue and grabbed his earpiece.

What did they expect?

But starting from that moment—

The situation spiraled out of control.

More over here!

Agh! They’re flooding out!

Retreat! Fall back!

“……?”

Gun-woo stared up at the building, confused.

The 1st and 2nd Platoon members who had gone up to the 10th floor were being chased by swarms of Orcs and forced into the center.

Both hallways had groups of at least five Orcs.

Obviously, Special Forces couldn’t take on Orcs one-to-one.

And it was indoors—grenades were a no-go.

“Sergeant, we need to support them!”

One of the 3rd Platoon members urged him, but Gun-woo shook his head.

“And do what?! You want us all crammed in a hallway and slaughtered?!”

Instead, he grabbed the company radio.

“Requesting sniper support! 10th floor of Myeongseong Building—our men are being chased by a large number of Orcs!”

Copy. Watch your fire during support.

“Watch your fire,” my ass!

Gun-woo burned with frustration.

That damn Choi Hyun too—all snipers were too damn calm.

Meanwhile, the entry squads were about to get their heads smashed in by axes!

BANG—! BANG—! BANG—!

Soon, the snipers’ mana rifles began firing.

“……”

But…

“Damn it! Are they even aiming?!”

Gun-woo swore into the radio.

They fired multiple times—but didn’t land a single hit.

To be fair, it wasn’t really the snipers’ fault.

They were positioned 800 meters away—just beyond the max range—and the Orcs were sprinting after humans.

“W-What do we do, Sergeant?!”

“What do you mean, what?! Shit…!”

They were helpless.

All he could do was curse.

Who would’ve guessed the Orcs had laid an ambush?

He had no excuses for the squads already inside, but at this rate, they were guaranteed to be wiped out.

If it were Choi Hyun, that bastard… he’d have hit at least two of them for sure.

“Fall back! We’re retreating!”

“What?! Sergeant—!”

“If we stay here, we all die! Damn it! If those things kill 1st and 2nd Platoon, who do you think they’ll come for next?!”

Gun-woo grabbed a subordinate by the collar, ready to run for his life.

But then—

THOOM—!

A deep, distant sound echoed.

It was familiar… but somehow different.

And at the same time—

Clink—! Splatter—!

An Orc, just about to cleave a soldier’s head in two, had its upper body blown apart.

“W-What was that?”

Gun-woo released his grip and looked up at the building.

What just happened?

The answer didn’t come in words.

It appeared directly before his eyes.

THOOM—! THOOM—! THOOM—!

That heavy, hollow sound rang out in succession.

Krrrgh—! Gwah—!

Orcs exploded in every direction, screaming in bizarre voices.

Alternating left and right—those closest to the soldiers were taken down first.

It was the work of a ghost—or even a grim reaper.

Between grim reaper and savior, the line was thin.

Gun-woo turned to look toward the sniper positions.

Sniper?

No way.

No mana rifle could do that to an Orc—obliterate its upper body in a single shot.

What’s going on?! Sniper team?!

W-We don’t know either!

The comms were in chaos.

H-Hunter! It’s a Hunter!

We’re saved!

The answer came through the earpiece.

Only a Hunter could do this.

And not just any Hunter—a monstrously strong one.

“W-Where? What the hell is that…?”

No one could even tell where the shots were coming from—or how.

One shot, one kill.

While Gun-woo and the squad stood in stunned silence, every Orc chasing the Special Forces was eliminated.

Exactly the number of Orcs that had been present.

And from a place no one could’ve imagined.

A rooftop high above, with a clear view of both Gaecheon Intersection and the Myeongseong Building—

“…This is strange.”

Hyun muttered as he watched through his scope, tilting his head.
